Neither fabric nor leather is universally more comfortable or longer-lasting. Fabric straps vary by weave and construction; leather needs more protection from water, sweat, and sunlight. Choose based on how you wear your watch, how the strap fits, and how much care you are willing to give it.
How to choose between fabric and leather
Start with your routine rather than a blanket claim about comfort or durability. Leather can suit someone who values its appearance and is prepared to keep it dry and care for it. A textile strap may appeal if you want a washable option, but its care needs depend on its material and construction.

- Consider the activity: Leather is a poor choice for bathing, swimming, or water work. A fabric strap is not automatically suitable for swimming; for swimming, snorkeling, and high-output activities, Suunto recommends silicone. Suunto’s strap-care guidance also describes a particular Explore strap made of woven polyamide.
- Check the construction: Textile straps may be woven, braided, or made in other ways. Leather types, linings, and finishes also differ. The sources do not establish a universal comfort ranking between the materials.
- Be realistic about care: Leather needs protection from moisture and prolonged sun. Some nylon straps can be hand-washed, but follow the instructions for the specific strap.
- Check fit and attachment: Confirm the watch’s lug width and the strap’s attachment system before buying. Quick-release straps and conventional spring-bar straps are not interchangeable in every situation.
Which strap is more comfortable?
There is no supported universal winner. Comfort depends on construction, fit, activity, moisture, and personal preference. Suunto describes one of its braided textile straps as soft, breathable, and stretchy; that is a product-specific description, not evidence that all fabric straps feel that way or that they outperform leather in a controlled comparison.

Apple advises keeping both the strap and skin clean and dry to maximize comfort and avoid long-term damage. That guidance applies to Apple Watch products, but the basic practical point is useful: a damp or dirty strap can affect the wearing experience regardless of material. Apple’s guidance on wearing Apple Watch is specific to its products.

How water, sweat, and sunlight affect each material
Leather needs prompt, gentle care
Seiko says leather is more susceptible than metal bands to discoloration and deterioration from moisture, sweat, and direct sunlight. Its advice is to wipe moisture and sweat with a soft, dry cloth, remove the watch, and let the band air-dry away from prolonged direct sunlight. Seiko also cautions against bathing, swimming, or working with water while wearing a leather-band watch—even if the watch itself is water-resistant. Seiko’s band-care FAQ addresses the strap as well as the watch.
TAG Heuer likewise advises avoiding water, perfumes, and cosmetics on leather straps and storing them away from heat and sunlight. Its advice appears in a Connected Watches FAQ, so check the instructions for your own watch and strap. TAG Heuer’s strap-care FAQ provides that product-specific guidance.

Fabric care depends on the textile
Fabric is not one uniform material. Seiko’s instructions for a particular nylon/polyester band say its braided structure can collect dirt and skin oil, snag, and transfer color when wet from sweat or rain. Seiko warns users to watch for damage caused by catching that band on other objects. These cautions concern the band covered by those instructions; they should not be assumed to describe every textile strap. Seiko’s model-specific band instructions explain those risks.
Cleaning a strap without damaging it
Use the strap maker’s instructions first. Cleaning advice can vary with materials and finishes, and removing a strap before cleaning may help avoid getting the watch wet; follow the watch maker’s guidance for your particular model.

For leather
- Wipe away moisture and sweat with a soft, dry cloth.
- Remove the watch and allow the strap to air-dry away from prolonged direct sunlight and heat.
- Avoid water, perfumes, cosmetics, solvents, oils, and aerosol sprays unless the strap maker explicitly permits them.
The first two steps follow Seiko’s official care guidance. Avoiding solvents, oils, and aerosol sprays is also recommended in the retailer guide below; consult your own maker’s instructions before applying any cleaner.
For nylon and other fabric straps
NatoStrap.watch recommends hand-washing nylon with mild soap and cool or lukewarm water, rinsing it, and air-drying it flat. This is a retailer’s recommendation, not a universal instruction for all textile straps. Check the label or manufacturer’s care instructions first, especially if the strap is attached to the watch. NatoStrap.watch’s care guide also recommends wiping leather with a dry or slightly damp cloth and avoiding solvents, oils, and aerosol sprays.

Durability and when to replace a strap
Neither material has a general lifespan established by the sources cited here. Suunto says leather performance and lifespan vary with the material and how it is used. Louis Vuitton recommends replacing its own watch straps every six to eight months at a Louis Vuitton store, with strap life affected by water exposure and wear frequency. That interval is brand-specific and is not an average or benchmark for leather straps generally. No general fabric-versus-leather lifespan statistic is available.
As practical signs to check, a specialist strap-care guide identifies fraying around nylon holes and cracks or stiffness in leather as reasons to consider replacement. Treat these as that guide’s advice, not an industry-wide standard. NatoStrap.watch’s maintenance guide gives those examples.

What to check before buying a replacement
- Measure or confirm the watch’s lug width and check that the strap fits the case.
- Confirm whether the watch uses conventional spring bars, quick-release pins, or another attachment mechanism.
- Read the care instructions for the exact strap material and construction; do not assume that all textile straps are washable or water-suitable.
- If you plan to change a conventional spring-bar strap yourself, check whether you need a spring-bar tool. Some quick-release straps do not use the same removal process.
