Measure the gap between the inside faces of the watch’s lugs, in millimeters, then choose a strap with the same width at the case end. For example, a 20 mm lug gap calls for a strap that is 20 mm wide where it attaches to the watch.
Measure the lug width
- Place the watch securely. Set it on a soft, stable surface. If you can remove the strap safely, take it off to expose the gap between the lugs. Nixon recommends this setup in its lug-width measuring guide.
- Measure between the inner lug faces. Use a millimeter-marked ruler or calipers. Measure straight across the gap at the point where the strap attaches, from the inside face of one lug to the inside face of the other.
- Record the result in millimeters. Check that the ruler or calipers are aligned across the gap. If the reading is unclear, measure again rather than rounding to a convenient size.
- Match the case-end width. Choose a strap whose width where it meets the watch equals the measured lug width.
Check that you measured the right dimension
- Measure the space between the lugs, not their outside edges.
- Do not use the watch face or case diameter to estimate strap width; it is a different dimension.
- Do not confuse case-end width with buckle-end width. A strap may taper, so the width at the buckle can differ from the width at the watch.
- Strap length is a separate fit decision. A correct width does not tell you whether the long and short strap pieces suit your wrist.
Cross-check before ordering
If a strap already fits securely and its size is printed on the underside, that marking can help confirm your measurement. Nixon notes that some straps include this marking. If the strap is not original, its fit is uncertain, or it may have changed through heat or moisture, rely on the watch’s lug measurement and the specification for its exact model instead.

Width alone may not establish compatibility for curved, integrated, or otherwise unusual lugs. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s strap finder treats lug shape as a separate consideration from width. For an unusual attachment, confirm the watch reference and strap interface before ordering.
