Choose by how you wear your watch
Pick a NATO for its one-piece construction
A NATO passes under the case and through the watch’s attachment points. If one spring bar fails, a correctly threaded, intact strap may still hold the watch at the other attachment point. This is a design advantage, not a guarantee against loss. Look at the product’s actual construction: retailers sometimes use “NATO” loosely, and one-piece straps can differ in material, stitching, and whether they use a single or additional pass.

The extra layer beneath the case may matter if you prefer less material under your watch. Check the strap’s thickness and your watch’s case geometry rather than assuming every NATO will sit or feel the same.

Perlon’s defining feature is its open ladder weave. Because the buckle pin can be positioned through the weave, you are not limited to the spacing of punched holes. CNS presents Perlon as a lightweight, breathable option, but that is seller guidance—not proof that every Perlon strap will feel cooler or more comfortable than the alternatives.

Pick canvas for its fabric texture, not an assumed water rating
Canvas offers a textured woven appearance, but the name alone does not tell you the fiber blend or how the strap handles water. CNS’s canvas guidance describes both cotton-based canvas and cotton/synthetic blends. Archer advises that its cotton canvas product is not recommended for swimming and may remain wet. For regular submersion, CNS recommends considering another construction.
Water, cleaning, and drying
Follow the instructions for the exact strap, especially if it will get wet. A product described as water-resistant is not necessarily recommended by its maker for swimming or repeated submersion.

- For Archer’s cited cotton canvas strap, the maker advises gentle hand washing with soap and water and says not to use it for swimming.
- For canvas care more generally, CNS recommends mild soap, cold or lukewarm water, a soft brush, thorough rinsing, and full air drying after significant wetting. Its guidance is product-category advice, not a universal care rule.
- Do not infer a drying time or water-performance level from the material name alone; the available seller guidance does not establish a controlled comparison across NATO, Perlon, and canvas.

Measure and check fit before ordering
- Measure lug width. This is the gap between the watch’s lugs where the strap attaches. Measure in millimeters or confirm the size in the watch maker’s specifications; choose a strap with the corresponding lug width. Archer’s product listing is one example of a strap page with product-specific dimensions.
- Check strap length. A correct width does not guarantee a comfortable fit. Consider your wrist size and case size, and check the strap’s listed length.
- Confirm attachment and case compatibility. Check whether the strap is one-piece or two-piece and whether your spring bars and case geometry accommodate it. Specialized cases or sensors can limit strap choices, so consult the watch maker where relevant.
- Inspect the particular strap. Compare its weave, thickness, hardware, and stated fiber content; products sharing a category name can differ.
- Match the care guidance to your use. If swimming or regular submersion matters, choose only after checking what the maker says about that specific strap.
Which should you choose?
- Choose NATO if you want a one-piece, under-case construction and a utility look, and you are comfortable with the additional material beneath the watch.
- Choose Perlon if fine adjustment through an open ladder weave is your priority.
- Choose canvas if you prefer a textured fabric appearance and have checked the exact product’s water and care limits.
No controlled, same-condition comparison establishes a universal winner for comfort, durability, drying speed, or water performance. Those qualities depend on the individual strap and wearer, so use construction, fit, and maker guidance to make the decision.
