What makes the “Up in the Air” different?
The visual idea is simple and deliberately playful: Airain’s two recessed chronograph counters become airplane portholes looking out onto 8-bit clouds. A tiny Eiffel Tower tip appears among the clouds in the left subdial. Airain says the counters’ rhodium-polished edges help create the porthole effect, while the pixel art gives the otherwise classic-looking dial a contemporary twist. Airain presents the project as a way to return the Type 20 to “in the air and in France.” That is the brand’s framing of the watch’s aeronautical lineage; the available product material does not independently document the original Type 20’s service history. In its announcement, CDMLEC CEO Tom van Wijlick said he wanted the watch to be “a conversation starter without reducing its iconic identity,” and credited André with emphasizing its aeronautical associations and French origins.

For a wearable-size reference point, the listed 47.7 mm lug-to-lug dimension is as relevant as the 39 mm case diameter. The 14.77 mm overall height includes the crystal; Airain also gives a 10.85 mm figure without it. Those numbers describe the manufacturer’s dimensions, not how the watch will feel on every wrist.

The AM2 is a manually wound chronograph with a column wheel and flyback function. A flyback lets the wearer reset and restart the chronograph in one operation while it is running, rather than stopping, resetting and starting it in separate steps. The dial pairs the two chronograph registers with a bidirectional friction bezel marked for 12-hour countdown timing. Airain states a 63-hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour.
The water-resistance rating is 50 m / 5 ATM. That is the published rating; it should not be read as an independent test result or as a promise of suitability for every water activity.
Price, edition and availability
Airain’s launch announcement, dated July 10, 2024, specified an edition of 88 watches and a launch price of €3,450. It said sales would begin July 14, 2024, through Airain and selected retailers, with two delivery batches of 44 planned for late August and September 2024. Airain’s current product page lists €3,650 and says the price includes insured shipping, duties and taxes. The sources establish those as separate dated prices but do not explain the difference. Check the official product page for the price and availability when ordering.
A retailer search result also listed the watch at €3,650 and indicated stock with delivery from September 9, 2026; that is a time-sensitive listing, not a guarantee of current inventory. Confirm stock, delivery terms and the final price directly with the seller. Airain’s product page states a two-year global warranty; ask the seller to confirm the applicable warranty terms.
Who is the collaboration for?
The design is aimed at someone who wants a recognizable two-register aviation-style chronograph but would rather have a distinctive dial detail than a strictly traditional presentation. The pixel clouds and Eiffel Tower are small enough to remain within the counters’ visual language, yet unusual enough to make the collaboration’s premise immediately legible.
