Audemars Piguet introduced its 41 mm Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Openworked in sand gold in March 2024. Reference 26735SG.OO.1320SG.01 is the first timepiece the brand says it has made in the new 18-carat alloy, whose color can read somewhere between white and pink gold depending on the light.
What is sand gold?
Sand gold is Audemars Piguet’s name for a new 18-carat gold alloy. In the March 2024 launch release, the brand describes it as combining gold with copper and palladium, and says the name refers to the appearance of sunlit sand dunes. AP says the alloy shifts between white- and pink-gold impressions as the light and viewing angle change. It also claims the material resists discoloration over time; that is the manufacturer’s stated property, not an independently verified durability result.
On this watch, the alloy is used for both the case and integrated bracelet. Alternating satin-brushed surfaces and polished chamfers give the exterior contrasting finishes. Inside, AP describes a sand-gold-toned galvanic finish on the inner bezel, openworked bridges and mainplate. Rhodium-toned movement components add contrast, and the openworked construction leaves the calibre visible through the front and sapphire caseback.
How the openworked flying-tourbillon movement works
The watch is powered by Calibre 2972, an automatic movement with a flying tourbillon and openworked architecture. A tourbillon places the regulating mechanism in a rotating cage; “flying” describes a construction supported from one side rather than held by a bridge across the top. The openworked bridges and mainplate expose more of the movement’s structure, while the symmetrical, layered layout is intended to keep the mechanism legible as a composed design.

Audemars Piguet says Calibre 2972 first appeared in 2022 for the Royal Oak’s 50th anniversary. The launch specifications reproduced by Europa Star list 271 parts, 27 jewels and a frequency of 3 Hz, or 21,600 vibrations per hour. The stated minimum guaranteed power reserve is 65 hours.

These are specifications published with the March 2024 launch, rather than confirmation of current production details or availability. The 50 m water-resistance rating is a published specification, not a reason to treat the watch as suitable for every water activity; follow the manufacturer’s current guidance for use and servicing.

Launch price and date
Europa Star dates the release to March 2024. On March 15, 2024, WatchTime reported a price of CHF 250,000. That is a dated report from the launch period, not a current retail quotation, a market valuation or evidence of present availability.
