The Formex Stratos UTC is a 41 mm mechanical travel watch built around a useful distinction: two case-side pushers move the local hour hand forward or backward in one-hour jumps, while the UTC hand stays put. That makes it possible to adjust to a new time zone without resetting the watch’s minutes or stopping its movement. The brand positions it as a modern pilot watch; that is a design description, not evidence of aviation certification.
How does the Stratos UTC’s true-GMT mechanism work?
The watch uses an automatic ETA 2892 base with a custom Dubois-Dépraz timezone module. Instead of changing local time through the crown, the two side pushers advance or retard the local hour hand one hour per press. The UTC hand remains steady, continuing to show the reference time while the local hour changes. Formex describes the mechanism and its operation on its Stratos UTC collection page and grey-model product page.
When the local hour hand passes midnight, the date changes with it, whether the hand is moved forward or backward. A separate pusher sets the date independently. A day/night indicator helps distinguish the local-time half of the day.
This arrangement is useful for travel because a time-zone change does not require resetting the minutes or disturbing the reference hand. The tradeoff is that local time changes in whole-hour increments, rather than by turning the crown to set the hands continuously.

How can you read two or three time zones?
The central hour and minute hands show local time; the independent 24-hour UTC hand indicates a second zone against the dial’s 24-hour scale. The bidirectional bezel adds a third reference: rotate it to align its 24-hour markings with the UTC hand, then read the hand against the bezel for the offset zone. The bezel is a reference aid, not another independently driven hand, so its reading depends on how you position it.
Formex’s collection page describes the watch as able to track up to three time zones. In practice, the quickest reading is local time plus the UTC hand’s fixed reference; the bezel requires an extra alignment step to follow another zone.

These are specifications on Formex’s current grey-model listing, rather than results of independent testing. Launch coverage reported slightly different dimensions: Monochrome Watches gave 12 mm height and 46.5 mm lug-to-lug on September 12, 2024, while Fratello reported 11.8 mm height on September 30, 2024. Those launch articles also stated a ±5 seconds-per-day regulation figure, compared with ±7 seconds per day on the current Formex page; the reason for the change is not explained. The multilayer steel case combines brushed surfaces, polished bevels and machined, sandblasted side cutouts. A 48-click bidirectional bezel carries a 24-hour scale with colored resin inlays. The layered dial has a sunray center, grained outer track, date at six and day/night indicator at nine. Sapphire crystals cover the front and back, with inner anti-reflective treatment on the front; the crown screws down.

How does it wear, and what adjustment options are available?
At 41 mm wide, 11.8 mm tall and 47 mm lug-to-lug on the current official listing, the Stratos UTC has a substantial steel-watch footprint without a particularly tall published profile. Those measurements are a starting point, not a guarantee of fit: wrist shape and the bracelet or strap configuration also matter.
On bracelet versions, screwed links and a hidden 4 mm micro-extension provide adjustment. Leather options use a carbon-fiber-composite clasp with gradual fine adjustment. Formex says the bracelet and straps can be changed without tools. The brand’s accessories catalog lists a Stratos UTC bracelet, leather straps, clasp and extra links. Check the exact SKU and compatibility before ordering an accessory or assuming a particular clasp or bracelet is included.

What did the Stratos UTC cost at launch, and what is its current availability?
Prices vary by date, currency, market and configuration. Formex’s US grey-model page displayed USD 4,470 and marked the model sold out when checked; its CHF collection page showed Stratos UTC variants at CHF 3,350–3,480, also marked out of stock. These are time-sensitive page snapshots, not guaranteed current offers. Check the official collection for present availability.
For comparison, Monochrome reported launch prices on September 12, 2024, of EUR 3,800 / CHF 3,500 on leather and EUR 3,950 / CHF 3,650 on bracelet. Those launch figures are not directly interchangeable with the later Formex page display because the dates, currencies and configurations differ.

Its clearest fit is someone who wants a mechanical watch that keeps a reference time visible while local time is changed in one-hour jumps. The independent local-hour adjustment and date change across midnight are the central practical features. The 24-hour bezel also gives the wearer a way to track another zone, though it requires manual alignment.

Before comparing it with another GMT watch, match the details that affect actual use and value:
- Whether local time jumps independently or must be set through the crown.
- How clearly the watch shows home time, and whether a third zone is practical to read.
- Case dimensions and fit, using the same measurement conventions.
- Movement reserve and published regulation, noting the source and date rather than treating tolerance as a measured result.
- Water resistance and the exact strap or bracelet adjustment system.
- Current prices in the same market and for the same configuration.
Monochrome characterized the watch as a user-friendly travel GMT in its September 2024 first look, while Fratello’s September 2024 launch article described its technical-looking case and deferred final judgment pending longer hands-on use. Those are the authors’ impressions, not independent evidence of long-term reliability or comparative superiority. Formex CEO Raphael Granito described the complication as intended to be practical for frequent and occasional travellers on the brand collection page; that is the brand’s stated aim, not a comparative test.
