The Nivada Grenchen Antarctic GMT is a 36 mm remake of the brand’s first GMT watch, pairing the original’s compact, retro look with a more practical movement. Its central 24-hour hand can now be set independently; on the vintage AR-1146, that hand moved in sync with the 12-hour hand. The new watch is an office- or caller-style GMT, not a flyer GMT with an independently adjustable local-hour hand.
A compact remake with a more usable GMT hand
Nivada Grenchen identifies the Antarctic GMT as its first GMT watch and dates its introduction to the early 1970s. Monochrome Watches, in its 29 October 2024 first look, describes the vintage example behind the remake as likely from the late 1960s or early 1970s, reference 87013. That dating is an informed description of the example, not an independently established archival date.
The remake keeps the 36 mm diameter, acrylic crystal and vintage-inspired red-and-black GMT hand, but replaces the original-era AR-1146 with an automatic Soprod C125. The meaningful functional change is the GMT hand’s independent adjustment. The watch’s bidirectional 24-hour bezel adds another time-zone indication.

Monochrome explains that the original EPSA case used water pressure to press the case against its gasket. That historical construction should not be attributed to the remake: its similar appearance does not make it a functional compressor case.

GMT hand behavior: office/caller, not flyer
In Monochrome’s terminology, the modern Antarctic GMT is an office/caller-style GMT. Its independent central 24-hour hand can be adjusted separately to follow another time zone while the regular hour hand continues to indicate local time. The vintage watch lacked that independence: its 24-hour hand tracked the 12-hour hand in sync.
This is not the arrangement usually meant by a flyer GMT, where the local 12-hour hand can be adjusted independently, typically in one-hour jumps. The Antarctic’s independent adjustment applies to the GMT hand instead. Its bezel supplies an additional 24-hour reference, so the display can be used to track another time zone without changing the watch’s local-hour hand.

The published case-length figures do not agree: Nivada Grenchen’s general product-page text gives 42 mm, the black specifications page gives 40 mm, and Monochrome reports about 41 mm. Check the exact variant’s current listing rather than relying on a single figure.
Black and tropical dial options
At launch, Monochrome described the black-dial watch as part of the permanent collection and the tropical brown-dial version as a 99-piece limited edition. Those are launch-era descriptions from 2024, not confirmation of what is available now. Nivada Grenchen lists strap options including leather, rubber racing straps and a beads-of-rice bracelet; configurations can vary, so verify the live listing for the chosen dial.

Price and availability
Monochrome reported launch prices of EUR 1,500, CHF 1,400 and USD 1,600, with orders opening on 14 November 2024. Nivada Grenchen’s current Antarctic GMT page lists a starting price of $1,600.
