The Ressence TYPE 3 Marc Newson (TYPE 3 MN) puts Ressence’s oil-filled, orbiting time display inside a case shaped by Marc Newson’s industrial-design vocabulary. Its unusual look is not decorative alone: a mechanical module drives the display discs, which appear to float beneath the domed crystal. The collaboration is limited to 80 pieces according to Monochrome Watches’ launch report; Ressence’s product listing, accessed October 8, 2026, shows a price of €61,000 including VAT and marks the watch sold out.
What is the Ressence TYPE 3 Marc Newson?
It is a design collaboration between industrial designer Marc Newson and Ressence founder Benoît Mintiens. Ressence describes the project as bringing their design and watchmaking worlds together, while Red Dot credits Newson as the designer and Ressence of Antwerp as the manufacturer. Rather than applying a new graphic treatment to a conventional dial, the TYPE 3 MN combines the brand’s ROCS display architecture with an elliptical, ergonomic form.
Newson said the result realised his original vision through a gratifying collaborative process, in a statement on Ressence’s collaboration page. How does the TYPE 3 MN display work?
The TYPE 3 MN is mechanical, not an electronic screen. Ressence’s current technical listing says a customized 2824/2 base calibre drives its patented ROCS 3.6 module through the movement’s minute axle. Magnetic transmission moves the display discs. The result is a system of rotating indications rather than fixed hands sweeping over a conventional dial.

The upper display chamber is filled with oil. That refracts light and reduces the visible separation between the domed crystal and the indications, helping create the appearance that the discs float close to the crystal. Red Dot describes four biaxial satellites in the chamber and notes that the elliptical silhouette and black DLC coating reduce visual depth cues. Why do published specifications differ?
The launch-era figures and the current product listing do not match on two headline measurements. Ressence’s collaboration page and Monochrome Watches’ launch report give 4.15 ml of oil; the current official product listing gives 3.75 ml. Monochrome reports a 45 mm diameter, while the current listing gives 44 mm. No cited source explains whether the differences reflect a revision, a measurement convention or an error.

What makes the Newson design distinct?
The collaboration’s point is the fit between the display and its housing. The satellite-like indications and oil-filled chamber are characteristic of Ressence’s approach to presenting time; Newson’s contribution is an industrial-design sensibility expressed in the watch’s elliptical outline and ergonomic form. Red Dot’s 2026 Product Design profile awarded the TYPE 3 MN “Best of the Best,” describing the combination as a symbiotic meeting of Newson’s and Mintiens’ design worlds. How much does it cost, and can you buy one?
Ressence’s product listing showed €61,000 including VAT and marked the TYPE 3 MN sold out on October 8, 2026. Price and stock are volatile, so those details describe the listing at that date rather than a guarantee of current availability. (Ressence product listing)
For context, Monochrome Watches reported a launch price of CHF 46,000 excluding taxes, availability from December 4, 2025 through Ressence and selected retailers, and a limited run of 80 pieces. What to take from this first look
The TYPE 3 MN is most compelling as a piece of integrated design: the oil-filled satellite display is central to how the watch looks, while the case gives that display a Newson-led industrial-design form. Its mechanics and published specifications are specific enough to distinguish it from a conventional dial watch, but the conflicting diameter and oil-volume figures—and the sold-out status on the dated official listing—make careful attribution essential when assessing the model.
