Certina’s DS Super PH1000M is a modern successor inspired by the brand’s 1970 model, not a vintage original. The 2023 relaunch paired a 1,000-piece orange-dial limited edition with a black regular-collection version. On paper, the black reference combines a vintage-style barrel case and fluted diver bezel with a Powermatic 80 automatic movement and a manufacturer-rated 100-bar (1,000-metre) water resistance.
What the 2023 relaunch brings back
Certina says the DS Super PH1000M first appeared in 1970 and that the contemporary watch takes inspiration from that 1970s design. The launch announcement described the case as a gently curved barrel shape, paired with a fluted, unidirectional bezel and black aluminium ring. It also specified a helium outlet valve at 9 o’clock and luminous hands and indices.
The original’s history is linked by Certina to the Tektite II programme. The brand says five aquanauts lived and conducted research in a seabed diving habitat for up to four weeks. That is Certina’s account of the connection; it should not be confused with an independently established history of the programme.
Certina’s 17 November 2023 announcement put it this way: “The DS SUPER PH1000M first appeared in 1970, causing a sensation both above and below the water.” The current watch is best understood as a reinterpretation of that model rather than a reissue of the original.

Two launch versions: orange limited edition and black regular model
| Version | Launch status | What Certina said |
|---|---|---|
| Orange dial | Limited to 1,000 pieces | Certina’s 2023 launch announcement described it as a limited edition. |
| Black dial with orange accents | Regular collection model | Certina’s 2023 launch announcement described it as unlimited. |
The announcement said the watches would be available through official Certina retailers worldwide beginning in November 2023. That describes the launch, not current stock. Check the reference and dial configuration when comparing retailer listings, since availability can vary.

The dimensions tell more than the 43.5 mm width alone. The listed 47.98 mm lug-to-lug gives a separate indication of how far the watch spans across the wrist, while the 14.15 mm height describes its thickness. Certina’s launch text also called the case 43.5 mm by 42 mm; those are not the same measurements as the product sheet’s width and lug-to-lug, so they should not be substituted for one another.
The black reference’s 20 mm lug width and listed quick-release system give owners a defined strap width to start from. A replacement strap still needs to match the watch’s attachment arrangement and end shape; a nominal 20 mm width alone does not establish compatibility.

What the 1,000-metre rating does—and does not—say
Certina lists water resistance at 100 bar, or 1,000 metres. That is the manufacturer’s specification, not evidence here of an independent pressure test or a guarantee that a particular dive is safe. A depth rating should not be treated as a personal diving assessment; the watch’s condition, seals, servicing and intended use also matter.
The helium outlet valve at 9 o’clock is part of the launch description. Its presence and the stated water-resistance rating are design and specification facts; neither amounts to a hands-on assessment of underwater performance.

Movement and everyday ownership considerations
The black model is listed with Certina’s automatic Powermatic 80.611 and up to 80 hours of power reserve. “Up to” is the manufacturer’s stated maximum, not a measured result in this article. The Nivachron balance spring is also listed by Certina.
For a practical wrist-fit comparison, consider width, lug-to-lug and thickness together rather than relying on diameter in isolation. For a diver-watch comparison, also weigh legibility, bezel operation, strap fit, movement, water-resistance claims and price in the market where you plan to buy.
