First Look: The 1970s-Inspired Mido Ocean Star Worldtimer

The Mido Ocean Star Worldtimer pairs 1970s-inspired styling with an 80-hour automatic movement. Its city bezel tracks a second zone manually, rather than showing all 24 time zones at once.

The Mido Ocean Star Worldtimer (ref. M026.830.16.030.00) is a 40.5 mm automatic dive watch with a silver retro dial, a city-name bezel and a Bund-style leather strap. Despite its name, it does not display all 24 time zones at once: the bezel is for manually tracking a second zone. Its practical strengths are an 80-hour power reserve and 200 m water-resistance rating; its appeal is a distinctly 1970s design.

What kind of worldtimer is it?

The rotating bezel is marked with 24 city names and can serve as a manual reference for a second time zone. The watch itself displays local hours, minutes, seconds, day and date. It has no GMT hand, synchronized 24-hour disc or automatic time-zone adjustment, so it is not a simultaneous 24-zone display. Monochrome’s 17 July 2025 first look explains this distinction in its feature on the Ocean Star Worldtimer.

In practice, align the city bezel with the relevant time offset and read the corresponding hour as a manual reference. You will need to account for daylight-saving changes where they apply; the bezel does not update time zones for you.

Why the design feels like the 1970s

Mido says the watch takes inspiration from a 1970s model. The silver-toned dial has a velour finish, black-and-red checker markings and a vintage Mido logo. A glassbox-style sapphire crystal and the city-name bezel reinforce the period character without making the watch a reissue. The two-part black leather strap uses a Bund-style underlayer that can be removed for a less prominent profile. The Swatch Group’s 18 July 2025 product release describes the design as drawing on the “bold stylistic codes of the 1970s.”

At 40.5 mm across and 13.4 mm thick, it is not a slim dress watch; the supplied strap’s removable underlayer offers a way to reduce its visual bulk against the wrist. The 21 mm lug width is useful when looking for another strap, but confirm the attachment and fit before buying a replacement.

Mido rates the watch at 200 m water resistance and specifies a screw-down crown. That is the manufacturer’s rating, not a guarantee for every diving situation. The technical details are listed on Mido’s US product page and in Europa Star’s July 2025 technical release.

Price and availability

Price depends on market and tax treatment. Mido’s US page listed the watch at $1,160 and marked it “currently out of stock” when checked on 8 October 2026; stock can change. Monochrome’s 17 July 2025 first look quoted EUR 990 including tax in Europe or CHF 850 excluding tax in Switzerland. Those figures reflect different markets and tax treatment, so they are not direct like-for-like comparisons. Check Mido or a local authorized retailer for current availability and pricing.

Who is it for?

This model suits someone who wants a retro-styled Ocean Star with a mechanical movement, long stated power reserve and a manual way to keep another city’s time in view. It is less suitable if the priority is a conventional GMT hand, automatic local-time adjustment or an at-a-glance display of every world time zone. The Bund-style strap’s removable layer adds flexibility, while the 40.5 mm case and 13.4 mm thickness make wrist fit worth checking in person.
