Fitbit’s general minimum age is usually 13, but the applicable threshold can be higher depending on local law. Children below that age may use Fitbit only through a parent-created Children’s Account on select qualifying devices. Parental consent alone does not make every Fitbit tracker or smartwatch compatible with a child account.
The clearest current child-specific option is Fitbit Ace LTE, which is intended for children aged 7 and older. It requires parent-led setup for users under 13, a parent Google Account, a child Google Account, the Fitbit Ace app, and an active Ace Pass for LTE features.

What is the minimum age for a Fitbit account?
Fitbit’s current terms generally require users to be at least 13, or to meet any higher minimum age required in their jurisdiction. Someone below the applicable age may use Fitbit only when a parent or guardian provides consent in accordance with applicable law.

- General service age: The usual reference point is 13, but local law may set a higher threshold. See Fitbit’s current terms and age requirements.
- Independent account control: A child generally becomes eligible to manage the account independently at 13, or at the higher applicable local age.
- Device eligibility: A Children’s Account works only with select supported devices and account arrangements.
So the accurate short answer is not simply “13.” It is: Fitbit’s standard account age is generally 13, while younger children may use a parent-controlled Children’s Account with a supported product.

Can a child under 13 have a Fitbit account?
Yes, but not usually as an ordinary self-created adult account. Fitbit supports Children’s Accounts for children below the applicable minimum age on qualifying devices. The parent or guardian creates and controls the account through a family-account setup.
The parent may need to:
- Sign in to or create the required parent Fitbit or Google account.
- Verify the parent’s email if prompted.
- Create or access the family account.
- Create the child’s account and provide the required consent.
- Enter accurate information, which may include the child’s name, date of birth, gender, height, and weight.
- Pair the supported Fitbit with the child account using the product-specific setup flow.
Fitbit says parents control access to a child account and certain privacy and connection settings. Because a child account can involve sensitive personal and health-related information, parents should review the Fitbit privacy policy before completing setup.

| User aged 13 or older | Standard account use may be possible, subject to local age rules and Google Account requirements |
| User in a jurisdiction with a higher minimum age | The higher local threshold controls |

For a child under 13, a parent completes setup using both a parent Google Account and a child Google Account. Users aged 13 or older can complete setup themselves, subject to the applicable account rules.
Ace LTE uses the separate Fitbit Ace app for the child experience and activity data rather than relying on the regular Fitbit app. A compatible parent phone is required for setup and management. The watch is designed to support calling, messaging, GPS, location sharing, contacts, a child PIN, and school-time controls without requiring the child to have their own smartphone.
The watch requires an Ace Pass to activate it and use its LTE-powered features. On the Google Store page checked on August 18, 2026, the listed prices were $179.95 for the device, $9.99 per month or $119 per year for Ace Pass, with financing shown at $15 per month for 12 months. Current product documentation lists Ace LTE availability in the United States, excluding Alaska and U.S. territories. A family outside that service area may not be able to purchase, activate, or use the same features.
Older Fitbit Ace products
Earlier products such as Fitbit Ace 3 used family-account and child-account arrangements. However, older models may no longer be sold, and their setup, compatibility, and support status should not be assumed to match Ace LTE. Check the documentation for the exact model, such as the Ace 3 product information and its manual.
Standard Fitbit trackers and watches
Do not assume that a Charge, Inspire, Versa, Sense, or another adult-oriented Fitbit automatically supports a Children’s Account. Fitbit’s materials refer to child accounts being available on select devices, not every product.

Parental consent solves the account-consent issue; it does not make unsupported hardware compatible. Before buying, confirm the exact model’s current child-account support, required app, country availability, and setup requirements. If Fitbit does not clearly document compatibility, treat it as unconfirmed rather than inferring it from the product’s age appeal or marketing.
How to set up a Fitbit for a child
Use this high-level process rather than relying on a copied button name, since Fitbit and Google can change app labels and setup screens:

- Confirm the exact model. Make sure it supports a Children’s Account and the required family-account arrangement.
- Use the parent’s account. Sign in and complete any requested email or identity verification.
- Create the child account through the family flow. Do not create an adult account with a false birth date.
- Use the correct app. Ace LTE uses the Fitbit Ace app; other products may use a different supported setup flow.
- For Ace LTE, create or confirm both Google Accounts. Under-13 setup requires a parent Google Account and a child Google Account.
- Activate required services. Ace LTE requires an active Ace Pass for activation and LTE features.
What happens when the child turns 13?
At 13, or at the higher applicable local age, the child generally becomes eligible to manage the Fitbit account independently. If the child takes control, the parent normally loses the same level of access and control previously provided through the family account. This is an eligibility transition, not necessarily an automatic change at the exact moment of the child’s birthday.

Ace LTE can also involve a separate Google Account transition. If the child’s Google Account is supervised with Family Link, turning 13 gives the child options concerning Google Account management and supervision. That Google process is distinct from Fitbit’s own account transition; see Google’s Ace LTE and Family Link guidance.
Why might Fitbit setup fail for a child?
Common causes include:
- The child is trying to sign in through the regular Fitbit app instead of the child-account or Fitbit Ace flow.
- The exact device does not support Children’s Accounts.
- The parent account has not been verified.
- The required parent or child Google Account is missing or has supervision settings that conflict with the current setup.
- The account country does not match the product’s availability.
- The child’s date of birth was entered incorrectly.
- A required Ace Pass is inactive or missing.
- The parent is attempting to pair a standard Fitbit device with an unsupported child account.
Try this recovery sequence:
- Identify the exact Fitbit model.
- Check the child’s correct date of birth and applicable country.
- Confirm that the model supports a Children’s Account.
- Use the parent’s family-account setup and the product-specific app.
- Confirm all required Google Accounts and parent verification steps.
- Check regional availability and, for Ace LTE, Ace Pass activation.
- Contact Fitbit or Google support if the account is locked or the birth date needs correction.
Should you enter a false birth date?
No. Use the child’s accurate date of birth and the supported child-account route.
A false birth date can put the account in the wrong category, trigger later age verification or account restrictions, complicate correction, and interfere with Google Account or Family Link supervision. It may also prevent the privacy controls intended for a child account. Parental consent is not a reason to bypass Fitbit’s supported account process.
Is Fitbit Ace LTE worth considering?
Ace LTE is the better fit when a family wants child-specific controls, GPS, calling, messaging, and location features without giving the child a separate smartphone. It is less suitable when the child only needs basic step or sleep tracking, when the family does not want a recurring subscription, or when the product is unavailable in its region.
The decision should come down to five checks:
- Age: Ace LTE is intended for ages 7 and older; do not stretch that stated range for a younger child.
- Account: Under-13 users need parent-led setup.
- Location: Current availability is limited to the United States, excluding Alaska and U.S. territories.
- Phone and app: The parent needs a compatible phone and the Fitbit Ace app.
- Cost: Budget for both the watch and the required Ace Pass, not just the device price.
For an older teenager, a standard Fitbit may be more appropriate, especially if cellular communication is unnecessary. But confirm the exact model’s child-account and age compatibility before purchasing.
