1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose Fitbit Charge 6 if you want to run or ride without carrying your phone, check live workout stats on your wrist, or start an exercise from the tracker. Fitbit Air is a better match if you want a screen-free device for activity and sleep tracking and are comfortable using its paired phone for workout interaction and location data. The deciding question is whether you value wrist-based workout tools or a more unobtrusive tracker.
How the two trackers handle workouts
| Workout need | Fitbit Charge 6 | Fitbit Air |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor GPS without a phone | Built-in GPS can record pace and distance without a phone, according to Google’s Charge 6 specifications. | No onboard GPS; location data relies on a paired phone, according to TechRadar’s review and Tom’s Guide’s comparison. |
| Starting and checking a workout | Has a wrist display, on-device workout controls and live stats. Google lists more than 40 exercise modes, including running, cycling, strength training and yoga (Google Store). | Has no screen or buttons; use the paired phone app to interact with workouts, according to Tom’s Guide. |
| Everyday interaction | Provides a screen and connected features including phone notifications, Google Maps, Google Wallet and YouTube Music controls. Feature availability and requirements vary (Google Store). | Screen-free and button-free, for a more minimal, less interactive wearing experience (Tom’s Guide). |
| Advertised battery life | Up to seven days; Google calls this approximate, and enabled features and use can reduce it (Google specifications). | Up to seven days according to Tom’s Guide; TechRadar’s reviewer reported more than seven days with a review unit. These are separate reports, not a controlled head-to-head battery test (Tom’s Guide; TechRadar). |
Choose Charge 6 for phone-free outdoor workouts
Charge 6 is the clearer choice if you leave your phone behind for a run, walk or bike ride and still want GPS-based pace and distance. Its GPS is built into the tracker, and its display lets you view live stats as you exercise. Google lists more than 40 exercise modes and describes workout tracking with on-wrist feedback.

Air does not have onboard GPS. It relies on a paired phone for location data, so it is less suited to a phone-free route workout. If you normally carry your phone anyway, that distinction may matter less—but the Air still does not provide a wrist display for checking your stats.

Air’s defining trade-off is straightforward: fewer ways to interact while wearing it in exchange for a screen-free, button-free design. That can suit someone who wants activity and sleep tracking without a conventional display on the wrist. For workout setup and interaction, however, Tom’s Guide says Air users must use the paired phone app rather than start an exercise from the tracker.

- COMPLETE ALL-IN-ONE-BUNDLE: Includes Fitbit Charge 6 Black/Obsidian, rapid USB charger, and a premium microfiber cleaning cloth, – everything you need to start tracking in style.
Charge 6 takes the opposite approach. Its display and controls make it more practical when you want to start an exercise and glance at live information without reaching for your phone. It also adds connected functions such as notifications, Maps, Wallet and music controls; these features have their own availability and requirements and are not essential to basic workout tracking.
Battery life and price need context
Both trackers have published claims or reports of roughly a week between charges, but the figures are not the result of one standardized comparison. Google advertises up to seven days for Charge 6 and says actual battery life may be lower depending on use and enabled features. Tom’s Guide lists up to seven days for Air, while TechRadar’s reviewer said an Air review unit lasted more than seven days. Treat those as separate evidence, not proof that one lasts longer in equivalent use.

TechRadar reported one reviewer’s 10K comparison in which Air recorded an average heart rate of 158 versus 161 on an Apple Watch Ultra 3. In that same test, Air recorded 10.43 km compared with 10.03 km on the watch; TechRadar said Air relied on phone GPS and that its map was inaccurate. These are observations from one reviewer’s test, not a general finding about accuracy or a clinical validation, and they do not establish that Air is more accurate overall.
