Fitbit exercise detection, reminders to start a workout, manual Exercise app tracking, saved-workout edits, and GPS are separate controls. The right steps depend on your device and the change you want to make. Identify your model first, then adjust its detection or reminder settings—or edit or add the activity in the Fitbit app.
Choose the control that matches what you want to change
- Stop or adjust automatic activity logging: look for Activity detection settings supported by your model.
- Change prompts to start tracking: adjust start-workout reminders on supported devices. These prompts are not the same as automatic logging.
- Fix an activity that has already been saved: edit or delete it in the Fitbit app.
- Add a missed workout: log it manually in the Fitbit app.
- Fix route or distance tracking: check GPS settings for your device; GPS does not control activity detection.
Menus and supported activity types vary across Fitbit devices, so there is no single settings path that applies to every model. Google Health Help Center lists device-specific workout and activity guidance in its workout guide and activity-tracking guide.

Change automatic detection or workout reminders
Automatic activity detection
Supported Fitbit devices can automatically recognize and record certain high-movement activities. The available activities and controls depend on the device. Google Health’s guidance says Activity detection is on by default in the device-specific context it describes; do not assume every Fitbit offers the same switch or activity list. Check the instructions for your exact model in the official activity guide.
Reminders to start a workout
A start-workout reminder prompts you to begin tracking; it does not mean the device is automatically logging the activity. On Sense 2, Google’s documented route is to open the Exercise app on the watch, go to Settings, choose Auto-start, and select the activities for which you want reminders. Other devices may use different labels or offer different controls, so follow the model-specific steps in Google’s activity guide.
#1 Best Overall
- COMPLETE ALL-IN-ONE-BUNDLE: Includes Fitbit Charge 6 Black/Obsidian, rapid USB charger, and a premium microfiber cleaning cloth, – everything you need to start tracking in style.
Google Pixel Watch activity detection
Google documents app-based Activity detection controls for Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5. The route is Google Health app → profile → Google Health settings → Activity → Activity detection. From there, users can change an activity’s minimum duration or turn automatic detection off. This Pixel Watch route should not be applied to Fitbit trackers without device-specific confirmation.
Edit or delete a saved exercise
The following is the currently documented Fitbit Android route; labels can vary by platform or app version.

Check GPS separately from exercise detection
GPS is for distance-based activities; it does not turn automatic activity recognition on or off. Google provides different setup steps for Fitbit families including Charge, Inspire, Versa, and Sense, as well as Pixel Watch. Some trackers offer built-in, phone, or dynamic GPS modes. Built-in GPS can reduce tracker battery life, while phone-based tracking can depend on the Google Health app’s location permissions and background access. Use the instructions for your model in Google’s GPS guide.
If GPS does not connect or a map is missing
- Check the device-specific GPS setup and any required phone location or background permissions.
- Allow time for a GPS signal to lock. Tall buildings and wooded areas can delay satellite connection.
- If the signal is lost, a route map may not appear.
These GPS limitations and setup differences are described in Google’s Fitbit and Pixel Watch GPS instructions.
