Yes, the Fitbit Versa 3 floor-counting problem was real. Owners reported phantom floors, totals several times higher than expected, and genuine stair climbs that were not recorded. Fitbit Community evidence from 2021 says support described the problem as a known bug, while contemporary coverage reported that Fitbit had no repair timeline.
That is a historical finding, not proof of the watch’s status today. The available public record does not identify a firmware version that definitively fixed every affected Versa 3, nor does it establish that the issue remains officially open in 2026.
What Versa 3 owners saw
Reports varied rather than pointing to one single failure mode:
- Inflated totals: Some users said the watch recorded two to six times the floors they expected.
- Phantom floors: People accumulated dozens, and in some reports around 100, while sitting, walking on level ground, or staying in a single-story home.
- Missing floors: Other owners said real stair climbs produced no floor increase.
- Intermittent readings: A watch could appear normal one day and be dramatically wrong the next.
These examples are user reports, not laboratory measurements. Several users associated the change with a firmware update, but the public record does not prove that an update caused it. Reports were present by February 25, 2021; one user described symptoms beginning around April 17 and worsening around June 11, while another said the problem continued through resets. Fitbit Community reports document those accounts.

What Fitbit acknowledged—and what it did not promise
A Fitbit Community participant said a customer-support representative called the issue a known bug and said the team was working on a fix. Fitbit moderators also acknowledged reports and pointed users to normal sensor and troubleshooting guidance. That is meaningful evidence of awareness, but it is not the same as a formal product-status announcement.
On July 13, 2021, 9to5Google reported that Fitbit was aware of the problem but had not supplied a timeline. In other words, “no ETA” accurately describes the reporting at that date; it should not be presented as a confirmed Fitbit status for 2026. Read the contemporary report.
Status based on the available record: Fitbit acknowledged Versa 3 floor-counting reports in 2021, but no public ETA was identified then. No authoritative public record available here establishes either a universal fix or that the historical bug is still officially open as of August 18, 2026.
How the Versa 3 estimates floors
The watch does not identify a building floor mechanically or visually. It uses a barometric altimeter: changes in air pressure are combined with movement data, and Fitbit’s explanation treats approximately 10 feet (3 meters) of elevation gain as one floor. See Fitbit’s floor-counting explanation and additional Versa 3 guidance.

That means ordinary mismatches can occur. A staircase may be substantially shorter or taller than 3 meters, and hills and ramps also change elevation. Elevators and escalators can create misleading pressure and movement patterns. Fitbit says stationary equipment such as StairMaster machines and treadmills is not counted as floors, and descending stairs do not add to “floors climbed.”
The Versa 3 has small altimeter openings on its back. Fitbit’s user manual shows their location. Blockage or contamination can interfere with readings, but normal limitations do not adequately explain reports of 60–100 floors in a single-story home; that severity is why the 2021 reports were treated as a bug rather than merely a misunderstanding of the metric.
Checks worth trying before contacting support
These steps can identify an obstruction, synchronization problem, or environmental effect. They are not a confirmed cure for the historical software issue.
- Inspect the back: Look for dirt, residue, or anything covering the altimeter openings.
- Clean carefully: Follow Fitbit’s cleaning guidance. Never push a pin, paper clip, needle, or other object into an opening; Fitbit warns that this can damage the sensor.
- Sync the watch: Open the Fitbit app and complete a manual sync so the displayed total is current.
- Restart the Versa 3: Reboot it, then repeat a known stair test after synchronization.
- Install offered updates: Apply any Fitbit app or watch firmware update officially offered for your device.
- Factory-reset only with a reason: Do this if Fitbit support specifically recommends it. A reset erases local settings and requires setup again, and historical users said it did not reliably solve the floor problem.
One Community account also mentioned changing a floor-count setting to “Driving.” That was anecdotal and may reflect a particular support workflow; it is not established as a universal Fitbit fix.

A controlled test separates normal behavior from a serious fault
- Sync the Versa 3 and record the starting floor total.
- Walk a staircase with a known number of trips and estimate its actual elevation gain.
- Record the watch’s result and repeat the same test on another day.
- Test away from elevators, escalators, open windows, strong drafts, and unusual weather changes where practical.
- Compare the watch with a manual stair count or another device.
A small, repeatable difference may reflect Fitbit’s elevation threshold. A persistent result showing dozens of floors without comparable elevation, or no floors after substantial climbing, is closer to the historical failure pattern. Keep screenshots, dates, firmware version, actual stair activity, and environmental conditions for support.
Do not assume every health metric is wrong
The evidence establishes a bad floor metric, not a universal failure of steps, calories, or Active Zone Minutes. It is reasonable to distrust the floor total itself while remaining uncertain about other statistics. A corrupted floor count alone does not prove that every health measurement on the watch is inaccurate.
Reset, support claim, or replacement?
| Option | When it makes sense | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Reset | A support agent recommends it after basic checks. | Low cost, but disruptive; historical reports did not show a reliable cure. |
| Warranty or support claim | The watch is within the applicable warranty or retailer return period, the sensor is clean, and the fault is repeatable. | Eligibility and remedies vary by country, seller, purchase date, and current Google/Fitbit policy. A replacement is not guaranteed. |
| Replacement | The watch is out of warranty, floor tracking matters, and the implausible readings persist—or charging, battery, display, or syncing faults are also present. | A newer device may change battery life, app behavior, compatibility, subscriptions, and feature support. It does not guarantee perfect floor readings. |
Start with official Fitbit support if coverage may apply. If you replace the watch, verify that the model you choose currently supports the elevation features you need; the historical Versa 3 evidence cannot guarantee accuracy on another Fitbit.
What the evidence supports in 2026
- The Versa 3 floor-count problem was widely reported in 2021, including overcounting, undercounting, and missing readings.
- Fitbit support was reportedly aware, and contemporary coverage found no public ETA as of July 13, 2021.
- No source here names a firmware version that universally fixed the issue.
- No source here proves that every affected watch remains broken today.
For health decisions, ignore an obviously corrupted floor total, document repeatable failures, and pursue support or replacement when the metric is important enough to justify the cost.
