Humane’s April 2023 demonstration showed a small, screenless computer worn on clothing. It answered by voice, handled a call, translated selected English speech into French, interpreted objects through a camera, and projected a simple interface onto the wearer’s palm. The prototype later became the Humane Ai Pin—but the consumer service was shut down at noon Pacific time on February 28, 2025. Its cloud-dependent features no longer work.
What Humane demonstrated in April 2023
In a TED-related presentation, co-founder Imran Chaudhri wore a compact computer attached to his clothing rather than holding a phone. Humane presented it as an example of “ambient computing”: access to information through voice, sensors and context instead of opening apps on a rectangular screen. Contemporary coverage described the founders, the screenless design and the demonstrations (Android Headlines; Android Authority).
The preview device was not presented as a fully specified retail product. It did show the core interaction model and operated without a paired smartphone during the presentation.
Calls and conversational assistance
Chaudhri used voice interaction to handle a phone call. The idea was to speak naturally to the wearable rather than launch a phone application, tap a contact or type a command.

English-to-French translation
The demonstration showed Chaudhri speaking in English and the device producing French speech, reportedly in a version of his voice. That was a selected demonstration, not evidence that the system could reliably translate every conversation or language combination (Inverse; Axios).
Camera-based recognition
Humane also showed the camera interpreting objects in its surroundings. The clip established that visual recognition was part of the concept; it did not provide independent accuracy testing or prove dependable recognition of arbitrary objects.
A projector instead of a screen
A miniature laser projector displayed a simple green interface on Chaudhri’s palm or another nearby surface. Voice, touch and hand gestures supplied the controls. Wired’s Gadget Lab podcast discussed the projector-based interaction (Wired).
Projection has obvious practical limits. A hand or surface must be positioned correctly; bright light and awkward angles can reduce readability; small text and long reading are less comfortable than on a phone; and gestures are generally less precise than a physical touchscreen. Those are design implications, not performance results established by the 2023 clip.

| Category | What the preview established | What it did not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Interaction | Voice commands, a call interaction, touch and gestures | That voice would be fast, private or reliable in daily use |
| AI | A selected translation example and visual recognition | General accuracy, factual reliability or broad language coverage |
| Display | Short projected graphics on a palm or surface | Phone-like readability, browsing or extended reading |
| Connectivity | The demo ran without a paired smartphone | Operation without cellular service, internet or Humane’s cloud |

Why the concept attracted attention
The announcement arrived during the generative-AI surge but proposed new hardware rather than another AI feature inside a phone app. Humane’s pitch combined hands-free access, a camera that could interpret surroundings and a projector intended to keep the user’s head up and hands free. It was a distinctive alternative to phones, watches and smart speakers, not proof that those categories had become obsolete.
From prototype to Humane Ai Pin
The retail product was eventually named the Humane Ai Pin. At announcement, the hardware price was $699 and the service cost $24 per month (Axios). That makes the advertised first-year cost $987 before taxes: $699 plus twelve $24 payments. The subscription was tied to core connectivity and AI functions, rather than being merely an optional premium tier.

The Ai Pin was intended to handle calls, messages, cellular data and AI queries while reducing dependence on a conventional phone. It still lacked a phone’s mature app ecosystem, large display and established input methods. The 2023 preview also did not demonstrate messaging workflows, web browsing, payments, navigation, identity verification or sustained all-day use.

What the shutdown means for owners
Humane’s customer FAQ says the Ai Pin was no longer available for new purchases and that its consumer service ended at noon Pacific time on February 28, 2025 (Humane FAQ; customer notice).
- Calls and messages stopped working.
- Cellular data and AI responses stopped working.
- Humane cloud services and .Center access ended.
- Humane said remaining customer data would be permanently deleted at the shutdown deadline.
- Limited offline behavior, such as showing battery information, could remain; the device was not literally guaranteed to do nothing.
- Humane said the service could not be transferred to another carrier and its number could not be ported.
Humane’s FAQ limited refunds to customers whose products shipped on or after November 15, 2024, with requests due by February 27, 2025. It also described no carrier transfer, subscription transfer, trade-in or replacement program.

Was it a smartphone replacement?
Replacing the smartphone was Humane’s ambition, not an outcome demonstrated in 2023 or achieved commercially. Voice is inconvenient for long messages and private information; projection cannot match a phone’s display; cameras and microphones raise bystander-privacy concerns; and cloud AI can be wrong. Noisy surroundings, poor lighting, awkward projection angles, battery charging and another cellular account add further friction.
The shutdown exposed the largest risk: when the operator ended its servers, the product’s defining functions disappeared. A smartphone with a voice assistant, a cellular smartwatch, earbuds or smart glasses may offer parts of the same hands-free experience, but each relies on a more established ecosystem. The Ai Pin’s distinctive interface was also its dependency.
Verdict
Humane’s demo was real and technically notable. It showed a coherent attempt to make AI the primary interface through voice, vision and palm projection, and it genuinely ran without a paired phone in the presentation. But a compelling interface demonstration is not a complete product. The Ai Pin reached consumers with a $699 price, a $24 monthly service and substantial usability trade-offs, then lost its cloud-backed functions when Humane shut the service down in 2025. Treat the video as a snapshot of an ambitious hardware idea—not as evidence of a functioning phone alternative today.
