Buying a Speedmaster well means checking more than the logo, serial number, and box. Verify the seller, match the watch’s parts to its exact reference and period, understand what archive paperwork does—and does not—prove, and account for condition and service needs. The available sources support these practical buyer lessons, but not a first-person account of mistakes by the author; this article therefore presents them as pitfalls to avoid.
1. Trusting the seller—or a serial-number match—too quickly
Start with the seller’s credibility, not the watch’s story. Omega recommends buying from its boutiques, authorised retailers, or official online shop where available. It warns that purchases from unauthorised sellers may involve damaged or counterfeit products and may fall outside warranty coverage. For pre-owned watches, seller reputation and clear answers about the watch’s history matter; a serial number alone cannot resolve every concern.
Omega says a boutique or authorised service centre can check whether a current-collection model corresponds to its serial number. Omega describes the result as an important indication, not a guarantee of authenticity. Its guidance concerns current-collection watches, so do not assume the same check independently authenticates every vintage Speedmaster.
Ask the seller to identify the reference, provide clear photographs of the dial, bezel, case, movement and bracelet, and explain any replaced parts or repairs. If answers are incomplete, inconsistent, or impossible to verify, pause the purchase and arrange an inspection by a qualified watchmaker or an Omega-authorised service centre. Omega’s customer-service guidance covers buying, care, and service support.

2. Treating an Omega Extract as proof that the whole watch is genuine
An Extract from the Archives can provide historical information drawn from Omega’s production records, but it is not an authenticity certificate. In a sample Extract for a Speedmaster reference ST 145.022 dated 2022-12-30, Omega states that the document was prepared from information submitted by the client without professional examination of the watch by the Heritage Department. The sample says it is “neither a Certificate of Authenticity” nor an attestation to the authenticity of the watch or any of its components; it contains information from the production archives.
That distinction matters: an archive record can help corroborate a movement or production detail, but it does not establish that the watch currently assembled around that movement is original, complete, or genuine in every component. Treat paperwork as one piece of evidence and compare it with the physical watch and its reference.

Similarly, do not assume a reference suffix or the date on a sales document gives the watch’s exact production year. A specialist Speedmaster buyer guide explains that suffix information relates to caseback production context, while a sale date is not necessarily a production date. Corroborate those details with the movement serial and available archive information. For a detailed reference-by-reference resource, the guide recommends Moonwatch Only; a book can help identify expected configurations, but it cannot replace an expert inspection.
3. Assuming every replacement part means “fake”—or that every Omega part is correct
Speedmasters can have parts replaced during service or repair, and some production transitions involved mixed components. A replacement part is not automatically evidence of fraud; conversely, a genuine Omega component is not necessarily correct for a particular reference or period. The question is whether the watch’s configuration makes sense for that specific model and its history.

Compare the dial, bezel, hands, case details, movement, and bracelet with a trusted reference for the exact watch. Look for mismatches and ask when and why a component was replaced. A seller who can document a service replacement may offer a more credible explanation than one who simply describes every part as original.
The specialist Speedmaster buyer guide discusses reference-specific details and the complications of mixed or replaced parts. It dates from around 2015, so use it for configuration questions rather than current market pricing.

4. Ignoring condition, service history, or water resistance
A watch that runs is not necessarily ready for regular wear. Ask for service records and find out what was done and when. Check the visible condition and have the movement’s performance assessed when possible. If service history or performance cannot be established, include the possibility of maintenance in your decision rather than treating an unknown as a clean bill of health.
Omega recommends an annual water-resistance check and a complete service every five to eight years, while noting that the appropriate interval depends on use and environment. Water resistance should be verified rather than inferred from a watch’s age, appearance, or past use. Do not expose a vintage Speedmaster to water on the assumption that its original rating still applies.

Omega’s care guidance also notes that the functional and aesthetic condition of a pre-owned watch affects its value. Visible damage, uncertain operation, or undocumented maintenance can therefore matter both to ownership and to the overall cost of the purchase.

Do not treat a full set of box and papers as a substitute for checking the watch itself. A modern Speedmaster may be offered on a bracelet that does not match its age or reference. For a limited edition, check whether its packaging, certificates, and accessories are consistent with that specific model rather than assuming that any Omega box or document completes the set.
Assess the bracelet alongside the reference and production period, and ask whether it has been changed. For special editions, compare the included items with reliable model-specific information. These details can clarify what is being offered; they do not prove authenticity on their own.
How to compare two Speedmasters before you buy
Use the same checks for each candidate instead of letting a persuasive story or tidy presentation dominate the decision:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Reference and configuration: Do the dial, bezel, hands, case, movement, and bracelet make sense for the exact reference and period?
- Condition: What is the visible condition, and has function been assessed?
- Service and water resistance: What maintenance is documented, what still needs checking, and what service expense may be ahead?
- Seller and paperwork: Is the seller credible, do serials and documents correspond, and are the limits of archive records understood?
- Bracelet and set: Is the bracelet appropriate to the reference and period, and are any special-edition accessories consistent?
- Price context: Compare the overall condition and configuration, but do not infer a fair current market value from an old buyer guide. Omega notes that local factors and supply and demand affect value; the sources cited here do not establish current comparable prices.
If important points remain unresolved, defer the decision until the seller supplies evidence or a qualified professional can inspect the watch. Omega directs owners to its authorised service-centre network, including for vintage-watch support.
