Some watches make telling the time a secondary concern; others hide or replace the usual display altogether. These five designs turn a watch into a day-and-night indicator, a miniature solar system, a loading animation, a maze game, or a piece of mechanical spectacle.
How these watches depart from ordinary timekeeping
The examples below come from a list published by Buffy Acacia in Time+Tide Watches on 22 August 2022. They are design curiosities, not practical watch recommendations. The details are attributed to that article; the product specifications and release history described there have not been independently verified here, and the list does not establish current availability.

Five watches that make reading the time difficult
Romain Jerome Day & Night: day or night, not the hour
The 2022 article says the Day & Night debuted in 2008 and uses two tourbillons as an indicator: a red-gold, sun-shaped upper tourbillon and a steel, moon-shaped one. With no hands, the display signals day versus night rather than offering an ordinary way to read or synchronize the time. The article also describes a skeletonized dial, a rust-effect bezel, and a 46 mm case; those specific details have not been checked against manufacturer records.
Van Cleef & Arpels Midnight Planétarium: a miniature solar system
Here, the visual focus is an orbital display. The article describes Earth, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn as colored spheres of precious stone moving around the dial. It also reports month and date functions and a golden shooting star moving against a 24-hour scale. That makes this the most functionally informative example in the group, but the article characterizes the scale as offering little help for accurate time reading. The display’s reported functions and construction have not been independently checked against maker documentation.

H. Moser & Cie. Swiss Alp Watch Infinite Reboot: a watch that appears to load forever
The Infinite Reboot replaces a time display with a black dial and a rotating disk that evokes a computer loading symbol. In the article’s description, this particular version does not indicate the time; it represents time passing instead. The piece distinguishes it from other handless Swiss Alp versions that can have a minute repeater, a feature it does not attribute to the Infinite Reboot.
Hautlence Playground Labyrinth: a maze on the wrist
The Playground Labyrinth turns the dial into a maze. The wearer moves a small ball through it by rotating the wrist, making the watch a playable object rather than a legible time display. The article identifies the maze as solid gold, the ball as platinum, and the case as titanium, and says cams in the crown return the ball to its starting point. These material and mechanical details have not been independently verified.

Haldimann H9 Reduction: hands hidden in plain sight
Unlike the other examples, the H9 Reduction is described as retaining conventional hour and minute hands. They sit beneath an opaque black crystal, however, so the wearer cannot read the time. The article also mentions a triple-barrel flying tourbillon and release options in 39 mm or 42 mm platinum cases; these details have not been independently checked against maker documentation.

Each watch disrupts time reading in a different way: the Day & Night gives only a broad day-or-night cue; the Midnight Planétarium foregrounds celestial motion; the Infinite Reboot substitutes a symbol for a clock face; the Playground Labyrinth invites play; and the H9 Reduction conceals a conventional display. Their common idea is not simply that they are hard to read, but that spectacle, concept, or interaction takes precedence over immediate legibility.

The Midnight Planétarium is the clearest product name for someone looking up a specific watch. That does not establish that it is currently for sale or readily available. The examples are best understood as design-led luxury objects, not as a guide to watches to buy for reliable timekeeping.
