If a vintage Hamilton pocket watch is marked “917,” that number may identify its movement grade—not the individual watch. Hamilton’s 1953 materials catalog describes Grade 917 as an open-face, 10-size movement with 17 jewels and a double roller. Those specifications are a starting point, not proof that a particular watch is authentic, original, running, or from a specific year. Check the movement and case markings before drawing conclusions.
What does “Hamilton 917” mean?
Hamilton’s 1953 materials catalog groups Grade 917 among its 10-size movements and describes it as open-face, with 17 jewels and a double roller. Watchmaker Dale LaDue, writing in the August 2010 issue of Horological Times, also identifies the grade as 10-size, three-quarter plate, 17 jewels, and double roller. These are descriptions of the grade; confirm that the watch’s movement actually bears the relevant markings.

Do not mistake “917” for the watch’s unique serial number. Hamilton explains that reference numbers identify a model and style, while serial numbers identify an individual timepiece. A short number can be a grade: the Pocket Watch Database’s 917 lookup cautions about this distinction. Treat that database as a specialist lookup aid, not definitive authentication.

- Photograph the movement. Have the watch opened safely by a qualified watchmaker if you are not familiar with handling pocket watches. Photograph the entire movement and any visible markings, including the grade and serial number.
- Record the case markings separately. Note any case reference, manufacturer, material marks, and other inscriptions. The case and movement may have different identifying information.
- Document the dial and hands. Take clear photos of the front and record visible writing, damage, and any apparent replacements. A matching movement grade alone does not establish that the dial, hands, or case are original to the watch.
- Use serial and reference details for research. Compare the recorded markings with Hamilton’s customer-service guidance and specialist records such as the Grade 917 example listing. Database entries can help orient an inquiry, but should not be treated as conclusive proof of identity or provenance.
Can you tell when it was made?
Not from “917” alone. A grade identifies a movement type; it does not by itself date the individual watch. Record the movement serial and case or reference markings, then use those details for a lookup or ask Hamilton whether historical information is available. Hamilton’s official history says the company was founded in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1892 and began producing pocket watches; that company history does not establish the date or ownership history of this particular watch.

Does a Grade 917 mean it was a railroad watch?
No. Hamilton’s early reputation is connected with railroad timekeeping, but that broad history does not show that a specific Grade 917 was used on a railroad or met a particular railroad standard. The grade specifications do not establish a railroad assignment, named owner, or provenance for an individual watch.
What can be said about condition and value?
The title and grade cannot establish whether the watch runs, what condition it is in, whether its parts are original, or what it is worth. A qualified inspection can assess the movement, case, dial, hands, and apparent service needs. If you are seeking a valuation, use dated sales evidence for genuinely comparable watches, taking condition and originality into account; a grade match alone is not enough.

Hamilton says it does not provide monetary estimates for vintage watches: “While we are happy to provide historical information if available, we do not offer monetary value estimations for vintage Hamilton watches.” Its customer-service page explains that it may provide historical information when available. No specific value for an individual watch can be responsibly inferred without examining it and considering comparable sales.
Where can you ask about service?
Hamilton says, “We are able to service select vintage timepieces with mechanical movements only.” Owners can send an inquiry with pictures through its customer-service page; eligibility is limited to select watches. Hamilton also says service frequency depends on the model, environment, and care, so there is no precise interval established for every watch.
