A flyback chronograph lets you start a fresh timing interval with one press while the chronograph is running. A split-seconds chronograph lets you stop one of two superposed seconds hands to record an intermediate time while the other keeps moving. They solve different timing problems, and some watches combine both functions.
What each mechanism does
| Function | What happens while timing | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Flyback | The running chronograph resets and immediately starts a new measurement. | Beginning successive intervals without separate stop, reset and start actions. |
| Split-seconds (rattrapante) | One of two superposed seconds hands stops while the other continues; the stopped hand later catches up. | Recording an intermediate time or comparing elapsed times from a common start. |
These are not mutually exclusive categories: a particular watch may combine flyback and split-seconds functions. Check the functions and controls of the specific model rather than assuming that one excludes the other. Audemars Piguet’s chronograph explanation describes both complications.

How a flyback chronograph works
Using the flyback control
- Start the chronograph using its start control.
- While it is running, press the flyback control. The chronograph hands return to zero and immediately begin timing a new interval.
A conventional chronograph requires separate actions to stop, reset and restart. Flyback combines those actions in one press, so it is useful when successive intervals must be timed without pausing to reset the watch. The function is historically associated with aviation navigation, but it is not limited to pilots. A. Lange & Söhne’s explanation describes the combined stop, zero-reset and restart; Hamilton’s user manual calls the function “instant restart.”

How a split-seconds chronograph works
Taking an intermediate reading
- Start the chronograph. Its two superposed seconds hands move together.
- Press the split or rattrapante control to stop one hand. Read its position as an intermediate result while the other hand continues timing.
- Press the control again to release the stopped hand. It catches up with the moving hand and resumes in synchrony.
After recording the split, the chronograph can be stopped and reset using that model’s controls. Button placement is not universal: in TAG Heuer’s example, start/stop is at 2 o’clock, the rattrapante control at 9 o’clock and reset at 4 o’clock. TAG Heuer’s explanation describes that specific layout.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This function can compare elapsed times from a common start, such as the times of successive competitors, or record a lap or other reference time while the overall timing continues. “Split-seconds” names the ability to split the timing; it does not, by itself, promise a particular measurement resolution. Resolution depends on the movement in the individual watch.
Why split-seconds adds a different mechanism
Flyback changes the chronograph’s control sequence so a running timer can reset and restart in one action. Split-seconds requires a second hand and a mechanism that can stop it independently, hold it while the other hand runs, and bring it back into synchrony. TAG Heuer describes additional parts for decoupling and rejoining the hand; A. Lange & Söhne’s account discusses concentric arbors, a clamp and resynchronisation.

Some double- and triple-rattrapante designs extend the comparison function to minute and hour counters, depending on the model. Those variants add further independently stoppable counters; they are not a feature of every split-seconds chronograph. A. Lange & Söhne’s description explains those arrangements. The added mechanism alone does not establish that every split-seconds watch is less accurate or harder to service.

A model-specific example
TAG Heuer identifies the Monaco Split-Seconds Chronograph, reference CBW2182.FC8339, as using calibre TH81-00, co-developed with Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier. In its article dated 10 September 2024, TAG Heuer reports 36,000 vibrations per hour, 1/10-second precision and 364 movement components for this model. These are manufacturer specifications for that watch, not general specifications for the category. See TAG Heuer’s model explanation.

A brief history of the rattrapante
In its account of the mechanism, A. Lange & Söhne says Joseph-Thaddeus Winnerl developed a split-seconds mechanism in the years leading up to 1838, Adolphe Nicole received a patent for a zero-reset heart cam in 1844, and wrist chronographs with rattrapante hands appeared around 1912. The same account places the first serially produced basic split-seconds movements in the 1940s. This is the manufacturer’s historical chronology, not a claim that one source establishes universal historical consensus. Read its rattrapante history.

Which function fits the timing task?
- Choose flyback for successive intervals: it is designed to reset and begin a new run immediately, without separate stop, reset and start presses.
- Choose split-seconds for an intermediate reading: it lets one hand mark a time while the other continues measuring the full elapsed interval.
- For a combined timing need: confirm that the specific watch provides both functions and learn its control layout from the model’s instructions.
