At launch, they also differed in movement: the M-40 used Fortis’s UW30, based on the Sellita SW200-1, while the M-44 used Werk 11. Fortis’s current product page now states water resistance of up to 300 m for the M-40 and 500 m for the M-44; those are current manufacturer specifications, not figures to assume for every 2021 reference.
What Fortis changed with the 2021 Marinemaster
Fortis places the Marinemaster’s history back to 1954, and relaunched the line in 2021 as a contemporary, sporty tool watch. The relaunch introduced the M-40 and M-44, with distinct case sizes and movements. The launch-era reference numbers reported for the M-40 were F8120003 through F8120010; for the M-44, F8120013 and F8120014. Fortis’s current product page reflects a range that can evolve over time. It is the source for the water-resistance and feature claims below; the 2021 comparison keeps the launch-era case and movement details distinct.

Case size and wrist fit
The launch-era 40 mm and 44 mm cases give the clearest starting point for choosing between the models. The larger M-44 may suit someone who prefers a more substantial watch presence; the M-40 is the smaller option. Case diameter alone does not establish how either watch will sit on a particular wrist, and the available launch information does not provide dimensions such as lug-to-lug length or thickness.

Movement
At launch, the M-40’s UW30 was reported as based on the Sellita SW200-1, while the M-44 was reported with Fortis Werk 11. Fortis currently describes the M-44’s automatic manufacture calibre Werk 11 as chronometer-certified, co-developed with Kenissi, and offering a 70-hour power reserve. Those are Fortis’s current claims and should not be projected onto every historical M-44 without checking its exact reference. The current page does not establish a comparable current M-40 movement specification.
Water resistance and bezel
Fortis currently states up to 300 m water resistance for the M-40 and up to 500 m for the M-44. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. Fortis specifically identifies the M-44’s bidirectional Gear Bezel and Fortis Lock System; the current page does not give an equivalent M-40 bezel description in the available information.

Strap or bracelet
Launch coverage listed both models with rubber-strap and Block Bracelet configurations. Fortis’s current range shows Horizon Strap and Block Bracelet options. Fortis describes a Screw Pin System intended to support a “one fits all” concept, and says the Block Bracelet has a Slide Clasp with quick fine adjustment. That wording does not establish that arbitrary third-party straps or bracelets fit; confirm compatibility for the precise reference and attachment system before buying an alternative.
Current construction and warranty details
For the current Marinemaster range, Fortis describes recycled stainless steel, sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides, and a screw-down crown with a triple-gasket system. Fortis also states a five-year manufacturer warranty. Warranty terms, geographic coverage, and whether a particular second-hand or historical 2021 watch qualifies are not established by that general statement, so check the terms that apply to the specific watch and purchase.
