Quartz did not begin as a cheap alternative to mechanical watches. It grew out of precision-timing work, reached the wrist through years of miniaturization, and arrived commercially in an expensive Seiko. The Quartz Astron 35SQ, introduced on December 25, 1969, is identified by the Seiko Museum Ginza as the first commercially marketed quartz wristwatch. Its arrival began a transformation that would reshape watch production—but it did not make mechanical watches disappear.
Why did Seiko develop a quartz watch?
The Astron was the result of a longer effort to make quartz timekeeping smaller and practical. The Seiko Museum Ginza says Seiko decided in 1960 to pursue official timing for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and began work on a tabletop quartz timer. Seiko completed a tabletop model in 1962, then used a Crystal Chronometer as the Olympics’ primary clock in 1964.
The work moved gradually toward portable timekeeping. Seiko completed a pocket-watch prototype in 1966 and a wristwatch prototype in 1967, according to the museum’s history of quartz development. These milestones place the wristwatch in a sequence of precision-timing and miniaturization projects, rather than as a sudden invention made in 1969.
Was Seiko alone in the race to make a quartz wristwatch?
No. The development was international. The Seiko Museum Ginza says Seiko and Switzerland’s Centre Electronique Horloger (CEH) both submitted quartz wristwatch prototypes to the Neuchatel Observatory Competition in 1967. Swiss researchers were therefore part of the early quartz story, even though Seiko reached the commercial market first.

Seiko introduced the Quartz Astron 35SQ on December 25, 1969. The museum describes it as the world’s first commercially marketed quartz wristwatch. That qualification matters: the claim is about commercial marketing, not the first quartz prototype or the sole origin of quartz-watch research.
What made the Quartz Astron 35SQ different?
The first Astron brought several technologies together in a wristwatch: a small, low-power tuning-fork-type quartz oscillator designed to withstand shock, an open-type step motor, and a low-power CMOS integrated circuit. The combination made quartz timekeeping usable in a watch-sized device.

The Seiko Museum Ginza reports the 1969 model’s accuracy as ±0.2 seconds per day and ±5 seconds per month. These are specifications for the Astron, not a promise about every quartz watch. Its original price was 450,000 yen, which the museum compares with the price of a popular car at the time. The first commercially marketed quartz wristwatch was thus a high-priced technological milestone, not an inexpensive mass-market product.
How did quartz watches change the watch industry?
The shift was not simply a contest over which kind of watch kept time more accurately. Quartz technology also changed how watches could be made and sold at scale. In its account of the period, the Seiko Museum Ginza emphasizes Japanese manufacturers’ mass-production systems and concentrated marketing, alongside delays in the Swiss industry’s response to electronics. The museum describes Swiss production as fragmented and points to additional financial pressures, including a rising Swiss franc, higher labor and material costs, and oil-shock-related strain.

- A good matching with these watches, highly recommend them to your families and friends
Those explanations come from a Japanese manufacturer’s museum and should be read as its account, not as a complete or independently settled explanation of the Swiss industry’s difficulties. The production figures it reports nevertheless show the scale of the change:
| Measure | Figure reported by Seiko Museum Ginza |
|---|---|
| Quartz share of Japan’s watch production in 1979 | About 55% of 60 million watches produced |
| Quartz share of Japan’s clock production in 1979 | About 50% of 44 million clocks |
| National production comparison in 1980 | Japan’s total timepiece production surpassed Switzerland’s |
| Swiss watch exports in the early 1980s | Fell to half the levels recorded in 1974 |
| Swiss watch companies | Over 1,600 in 1970; fewer than 600 by the middle of the 1980s |
| Swiss watch-industry employees | 90,000 in 1970; 33,000 in 1984 |
These are estimates and figures as reported by the museum, not independently cross-checked here. They describe severe disruption, but not the disappearance of mechanical watchmaking. The phrase “Quartz Crisis” captures the scale of pressure on established Swiss producers; it should not be taken literally as the end of mechanical watches.

How did quartz technology spread beyond Seiko?
Seiko’s corporate heritage page says the company held key patent rights, including for the tuning-fork quartz resonator, and chose to disclose its proprietary technologies so watchmakers around the world could access the mechanism. That is Seiko’s account of its role in sharing the technology. It does not establish that disclosure alone caused quartz to spread globally; production capacity, commercial decisions, and the wider competition all mattered to the industry change described by the museum.
The history covered here ends with quartz becoming an industrial force and Swiss watchmaking under exceptional pressure. The Seiko Museum also refers to later reorganization and recovery, but its account does not establish a complete history of that recovery or of Swatch’s role.
