Dave Sergeant’s 2022 Fratello favorites were the Fortis Stratoliner, Zenith Chronomaster Revival A3818 “Airweight Cover Girl,” and Arcanaut Arc II Fordite. They are personal picks, not an objective ranking or a comprehensive list of that year’s releases: Sergeant excluded Fratello limited editions and chose watches he said he would personally spend his money on.
In his feature published December 17, 2022, Fratello contributor Dave Sergeant explained what stood out to him about each watch. His choices range from a practical-looking bracelet watch to a colorful titanium chronograph and a dial made from hardened automotive paint.
Fortis Stratoliner: the personal pick
The Stratoliner was the most personal choice on Sergeant’s list. At the time his feature appeared, it was also the only one of the three he had added to his own collection.
Sergeant described a 41 mm recycled stainless-steel case measuring 15 mm thick. He singled out the notched lugs and straight-end block bracelet, praising the bracelet’s articulation and quick-adjusting clasp. His favorite dial detail was what it left out: conventional hour markers. Sergeant said he could read the time from the positions of the hands. That is his reported experience and preference, rather than an independent legibility test.

Zenith Chronomaster Revival A3818 “Airweight Cover Girl”: a titanium follow-up
Zenith and Revolution revisited their 2020 stainless-steel Cover Girl reissue in 2022 with this titanium version. The A3818 has a 37 mm tonneau case. Sergeant called the Airweight a worthy follow-up to the earlier release.
The blue vertically satin-brushed dial brings together white luminous markings, a tachymeter scale, and a “shark’s tooth” elapsed-seconds scale. A red central chronograph-seconds hand adds a bright contrast. The “Cover Girl” nickname refers to the original A3818’s appearance on the cover of Manfred Rössler’s book Zenith: Swiss Watch Manufacture Since 1865.

Arcanaut Arc II Fordite: a dial made from paint layers
The Arc II Fordite is a 41 mm stainless-steel tonneau watch. Its defining feature is a dial cut from Fordite: layers of hardened automotive paint overspray, rather than a gemstone. Each cut produces a distinctive pattern, making the dial’s material and appearance the main attraction.
Sergeant’s feature says the Fordite used by Black Badger and Arcanaut came from Detroit-area Ford plants and dates from the 1970s to the 1990s. It describes the material as having been collected from factory paint bays, where paint layers built up over time, and says workers salvaged it. The same feature traces Fordite’s early collection to Ford Motor Company factories in Michigan in the 1940s. These historical details are attributed to that feature; independent corroboration is not established here.

At the time of the feature, buyers could choose a dial and select from colored rubber straps. The dial has no hour markers, so the striking pattern comes with a legibility trade-off. Those configuration details describe the 2022 feature and should not be assumed to reflect present-day ordering options.

Sergeant’s feature does not establish comparable prices, movements, water resistance, current stock, or present production status for all three watches. It is best read as a snapshot of what appealed to one contributor among 2022 releases, rather than as a buying guide or a complete ranking.
