The Seiko 5126-8090 is a late-1960s sports watch with an unusual black bezel and a reported connection to the original Kamen Rider television series. Specialist watch writer Michael Stockton identified it on actor Hiroshi Fujioka in a 2018 article; that screen association has not been independently confirmed here by a production archive or Seiko. It is also distinct from Seiko’s 2024 SRPL03 and SRPL05 re-creations: those are modern Seiko 5 Sports watches, not vintage 5126-8090s.
What is the Seiko 5126-8090 Kamen Rider watch?
The 5126-8090 is a Seiko automatic sports watch that Stockton’s 2018 Fratello article dates to March 1968. The same article associates it with Kamen Rider actor Hiroshi Fujioka. Treat the date and on-screen identification as that article’s account, rather than as details verified by an official production record.
Its appeal is not only the reported television link. The watch has a graphic, unusually sparse bezel and a high-contrast dial that stand apart from more conventional sports-watch designs of the period.
What makes the original design distinctive?
Stockton describes a black bezel without numerals: thick printed bars mark the hours, dots mark the first 15 minutes, and a luminous pip sits at 12. The black dial has a silver-colored minute ring, rectangular metal hands with luminous material, and a red sweep-seconds hand. A day-date display and acrylic crystal complete the look.

The article reports the case at more than 38 mm in diameter, 43 mm long, and 13 mm thick. It also gives 19 mm as the end-link width of the bracelet pictured. These are the article’s reported figures, not fresh measurements or a guarantee that a particular replacement bracelet or strap will fit.
What movement is inside the 5126-8090?
Fratello reports a Seiko caliber 5126 automatic movement with 23 jewels and a frequency of 19,800 beats per hour. According to the article, it does not hand-wind; the date quicksets by pushing in the spring-loaded crown, while the day does not quickset.

- STAINLESS STEEL CASE: Precisely finished stainless steel construction offers durability, corrosion resistance, and a polished, timeless look.

The same article warns that a plastic part in the date-change mechanism can break and says donor movements may be harder to find than for some other Seiko calibers. That is a useful vintage-watch due-diligence lead, not a current Seiko service bulletin. Anyone considering a purchase should have a qualified watchmaker assess the movement and calendar operation rather than assume that a running watch is mechanically sound.
How does the vintage watch compare with Seiko’s SRPL03 and SRPL05?
Seiko’s official Heritage Design Re-creation page presents the SRPL03 and SRPL05 as modern versions of a design popular from the late 1960s to early 1970s. Seiko describes them as close to the original in size and shape, with updated bracelet materials and a retro leather strap. Both use the modern 4R36 caliber; the official page lists black and silver dial variants and a limited run of 9,999 pieces for each model, with availability in July 2024. That release date does not establish current stock.

| Comparison | Vintage Seiko 5126-8090 | Modern SRPL03 and SRPL05 |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Original vintage reference; Fratello’s 2018 article reports the Kamen Rider association. | Modern Seiko 5 Sports re-creations; Seiko lists them as reproducing a late-1960s-to-early-1970s design. |
| Movement | Caliber 5126; Fratello reports 23 jewels, 19,800 beats per hour, no hand-winding, and push-in date quickset. | Caliber 4R36, according to Seiko’s product page. |
| Availability | Current supply and market pricing are not established by the cited 2018 article. | Seiko lists a July 2024 availability date and 9,999 pieces per model; present inventory is not established by that release information. |
| What you are buying | A vintage watch whose condition, originality, and service needs depend on the individual example. | A modern watch inspired by the design, not an original 5126-8090. |
Seiko’s broader history says the Seiko 5 Sports line began in 1968. The Seiko 5 concept is associated with five attributes: automatic movement, day-date at three, water resistance, a recessed crown at four, and a durable case and bracelet. That collection context does not prove that every attribute applies identically to this particular 5126-8090.
What should you check before buying a vintage example?
Fratello’s 2018 article describes examples it encountered as difficult to find, often in poor condition or modified, and notes that many were located in Japan. Those are dated observations, not a current survey of supply. Its price anecdotes—a reported personal purchase in 2017 and an estimate for decent examples at the time of publication—are historical, not a basis for valuing one today.

For an individual watch, focus on evidence about that specimen:
- Originality: Compare the dial, bezel, hands, and other visible parts with the reference’s documented design. Ask which components have been replaced or refinished.
- Condition: Inspect the dial, bezel markings and pip, and acrylic crystal for damage or alteration. Ask for clear photographs if buying remotely.
- Calendar operation: Confirm the day and date change as expected, and ask a watchmaker to assess the mechanism given the article’s warning about a breakable date-change part.
- Service and parts: Request service documentation and get a qualified watchmaker’s view on condition and parts availability before committing to a repair-dependent purchase.
- Bracelet or strap fit: Do not assume that the reported 19 mm end links on the pictured bracelet apply to every example or guarantee fit. Check the actual watch and the specific replacement.
Why is this watch linked with Kamen Rider?
The association comes from Stockton’s 2018 Fratello article, which identifies the 5126-8090 on Hiroshi Fujioka during Kamen Rider. The article makes the watch a compelling intersection of Seiko design and Japanese television history, but the identification should remain attributed to that specialist account: it is not independently confirmed here by a production archive or Seiko. The modern SRPL03 and SRPL05 echo the design; they do not inherit the vintage watch’s identity or make the reported screen appearance their own.
