Fratello’s December 2025 year-end selection highlights five technically ambitious watches released that year: Vacheron Constantin’s astronomical chiming wristwatch, Audemars Piguet’s crown-adjusted perpetual calendar, Breguet’s high-frequency tourbillon, Gérald Genta’s slim minute repeater and Jaeger-LeCoultre’s dual-time Reverso with a gyro tourbillon. They are editorial favorites chosen for their mechanics and visual appeal, not a definitive ranking of every complicated watch released in 2025.

What makes these five watches stand out?

“Complicated” means different things across this selection. One watch combines dozens of functions; another concentrates on making a perpetual calendar easier to set; others showcase chiming, a tourbillon or a specialized escapement. Comparing them by a single complication count would miss the more useful questions: what each mechanism does, how the wearer interacts with it, and what its dimensions suggest about wearing it.

Fratello’s author, Jorg Weppelink, presented the five as favorites from a larger field on December 19, 2025, weighing technical impressiveness alongside appearance and acknowledging that beauty is subjective. The order below follows the selection, not an independently measured ranking.

Fratello’s five selections

1. Vacheron Constantin Les Cabinotiers Solaria Ultra Grand Complication — La Première

Fratello calls the Solaria the list’s technical centerpiece. Vacheron Constantin describes this unique watch as having 41 complications, including five astronomical functions and a Westminster minute repeater. The manufacturer lists 1,521 components in caliber 3655, housed in a 45 mm case that is 14.99 mm thick. Those figures and its “most complicated wristwatch ever made” characterization are Vacheron Constantin’s own published claims, not the result of an independent comparison.

The scale of the mechanism is matched by an unusually long development story: the brand says the watch followed eight years of research and development and that 13 patent applications were filed. Vacheron Constantin’s product description sums up the design as a watch that “features 41 complications, 5 rare astronomical functions and an innovative Westminster minute-repeater.”

2. Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar, ref. 26674ST.OO.1320ST.01

Fratello’s pick is the stainless-steel Royal Oak with a blue dial. Its distinguishing practical feature is how the wearer adjusts the perpetual calendar: caliber 7138 uses the crown for calendar corrections, rather than the separate case-side correctors that many perpetual calendars require. Audemars Piguet confirms crown-only adjustment and says the movement has three patented mechanisms.

This is a different kind of achievement from packing in the largest possible number of functions. A perpetual calendar tracks calendar irregularities, including the varying lengths of months and leap years; making its settings accessible through the crown changes how the owner operates the complication. Audemars Piguet describes the movement as adjusted “solely with the crown, removing the need for additional tools.”

3. Breguet Expérimentale 1, ref. E001BH/S9/5ZV

Breguet Expérimentale 1 pairs a tourbillon with a magnetic constant-force escapement. Fratello highlights its 10 Hz operating frequency and the escapement’s role in the watch’s technical concept. Breguet presents the model as the first chapter in an exploratory research-and-development line, with an architecture intended to enhance stability and precision.

Complicated Watches and Their Repair
  • Used Book in Good Condition

The manufacturer’s specifications list movement 7250 with 266 components, a 72-hour power reserve, and a 43.5 mm case in 18K Breguet gold. The 10 Hz frequency is a striking design figure, but frequency alone does not establish real-world accuracy; the available product description does not provide an independent comparative accuracy test. Breguet calls the watch “a forward-looking approach to Haute Horlogerie.”

A tourbillon is often discussed alongside complications, as it is here, but it is not technically a complication in the strict horological sense noted in Fratello’s discussion of the Reverso. Its rotating assembly is a regulating mechanism, while a complication conventionally adds an indication or function beyond basic timekeeping.

4. Gérald Genta Minute Repeater Black Onyx

Fratello’s selection emphasizes the challenge of fitting a minute repeater into a relatively slim watch. The Gérald Genta model combines black onyx with yellow gold; the brand lists a 40 mm case diameter and 9.6 mm thickness. A minute repeater chimes the time on demand, making the sound-producing mechanism central to both the watch’s operation and its design.

Fratello reports that producing a movement takes four weeks and that production is capped at 10 movements per year. Those production details are reported by Fratello and are not independently confirmed on the official product page. Gérald Genta calls the minute repeater “one of the most revered complications and Mr. Genta’s personal favorite”; the personal-favorite description is the brand’s attribution.

5. Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Hybris Artistica Calibre 179

Fratello describes this Reverso as a 10-piece limited edition with a time zone on each dial and a 24-hour indicator on the rear dial. Its gyro tourbillon rotates once every 16 seconds, while its cage completes a rotation each minute. The distinction between those two rotations matters: they describe separate motions in the mechanism, not two ways of stating the same interval.

Fratello gives the case dimensions as 31 mm by 51.1 mm by 13.63 mm and reported a US$565,000 price when its article was published on December 19, 2025. Treat that price as a publication-time figure, not a current quote; price and availability may change. These details, including the limited-edition quantity, are attributed to Fratello here.

How to compare the picks

The five watches make their complexity legible in different ways. The Solaria’s appeal is the breadth and density of its functions; the Royal Oak’s is the user interaction behind its perpetual calendar; the Expérimentale 1 explores a high-frequency tourbillon and constant-force architecture; the Gérald Genta focuses on on-demand chiming in a slim case; and the Reverso combines time-zone indications with a multi-axis tourbillon presentation.

Wearability also depends on more than diameter. The published dimensions range from the 40 mm by 9.6 mm Gérald Genta to the 45 mm by 14.99 mm Solaria, while the Reverso’s rectangular case measures 31 mm by 51.1 mm by 13.63 mm. The profiles and shapes are not directly interchangeable measures of wrist presence, but they make clear that these are distinct wearing propositions, not just different mechanisms.

Finally, the specifications come from manufacturer product descriptions or, for the Reverso and certain Gérald Genta production details, Fratello’s account. Manufacturer figures and superlatives should be read as attributed claims. The selection does not offer a standardized scoring method, so the best choice depends on whether the reader values astronomical breadth, practical setting, experimental mechanics, chiming or an elaborate dual-time display.
