The selection is editorial rather than a scored ranking: it includes the Patek Philippe Calatrava 6196P, two Chopard L.U.C Quattro Mark IV versions, the Rolex 1908 on its new Settimo bracelet, the Cartier Tank à Guichets, and the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Small Seconds.
How to read Fratello’s five-watch selection
Jorg Weppelink’s June 27, 2025 article presents five favorites, not a numbered hierarchy or an objective test. He noted that “Picking our five favorites, however, was a much harder task.” The models stand out for different reasons: restrained traditional dials, unusually long reserves, precious-metal bracelets, or a distinctive time display. The prices below are those reported in that article, not current quotes; present-day pricing and availability have not been established.
For a quick comparison, the key figures reported by Fratello are:
| Watch | Case dimensions | Movement and reserve | Bracelet or strap | June 2025 price reported by Fratello |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Patek Philippe Calatrava 6196P | 38 mm diameter; 9.33 mm thick; 44.9 mm lug-to-lug | Manual 30-255 PS; 65 hours | Chocolate-brown alligator strap with platinum buckle | €46,800 |

| Cartier Tank à Guichets | 24.8 mm across; 37.6 mm lug-to-lug; 6 mm thick | Manual caliber 9755 MC; 43 hours | Not stated in Fratello’s article | US$47,700 for regular gold; US$55,000 for regular platinum; US$61,000 for limited platinum |
| Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Small Seconds | 27.4 mm by 45.6 mm; 7.56 mm thick | Manual caliber 822; 42 hours | Rose-gold Milanese bracelet | €44,800 including taxes |
Dimensions, movement specifications, edition details, and prices in the table are as reported in Fratello’s June 27, 2025 article. The figures are not directly interchangeable measures of wrist fit: case shape and lug design affect how a watch wears.

1. Patek Philippe Calatrava 6196P: a classic dress-watch profile
The Calatrava 6196P is the selection for someone drawn to a traditional round watch and a clean, formal dial. Fratello describes it as a return to the classic Calatrava silhouette and a successor to the long-discontinued 5196.
Its 38 mm platinum case is 9.33 mm thick, with a 44.9 mm lug-to-lug measurement. A small diamond set into the case band at six o’clock is a discreet precious-metal detail rather than a prominent dial feature. The rose-gilt opaline dial pairs dark anthracite markers with dauphine hands.
Inside is the hand-wound 30-255 PS, reported with 27 jewels, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, and a 65-hour power reserve. Fratello lists a chocolate-brown alligator strap and platinum buckle. Its June 2025 price was reported as €46,800.

2. Chopard L.U.C Quattro Mark IV: the longest stated reserve
Chopard’s L.U.C Quattro Mark IV appeared in two precious-metal versions at Watches and Wonders: 18K rose gold with a dark-blue dial, and platinum with an ice-blue dial. Both share a 39 mm case, 10.4 mm thickness, and 46.5 mm lug-to-lug measurement.
The bassine-shaped case uses curved lugs and a mix of polished and brushed surfaces. At six o’clock, a recessed subdial combines running seconds with a pointer date. The result is more visually detailed than the Calatrava, while remaining within the conventional round-watch format.
The hand-wound caliber 98.09-L is COSC-certified and reported at 34 jewels and 28,800 vibrations per hour. Its 216-hour reserve—nine days—is the longest stated reserve among these five selections. Fratello’s June 2025 prices were €41,300 for rose gold and €51,400 for platinum.

- Round silver-tone watch featuring white dial with stick indices, luminous hands, and mini date window
- 39 mm stainless steel case with mineral dial window
- Movement: Conventional Battery G111, Japanese quartz movement with analog display.
- Croco-embossed leather band with buckle closure
- Water resistant to 50 m (165 ft): In general, suitable for short periods of recreational swimming, but not diving or snorkeling
3. Rolex 1908 on the Settimo bracelet: dress-watch form in full gold
Fratello’s reason for including the Rolex 1908 was the addition of the Settimo bracelet, a seven-row full-gold design. The watch has a 39 mm yellow-gold case, measures 9.5 mm thick and 47 mm lug-to-lug, and uses a coin-edge bezel.
Fratello describes white- or black-dial versions with gold Arabic numerals and stick markers, a railroad minute track, and subsidiary seconds. The automatic caliber 7140 is reported with 38 jewels, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, and a 66-hour reserve. Rolex’s stated Superlative Chronometer tolerance is ±2 seconds per day.
The Settimo bracelet changes the character of the watch: rather than pairing a gold case with a conventional leather dress strap, it carries the precious metal across the wrist. Fratello listed a June 2025 price of €36,200.
Rank #4
- Polished silver-tone watch featuring blue sunray dial with stick indices and day/date window
- 40 mm stainless steel case with mineral dial window
- Japanese quartz movement with analog display
- Three-link stainless steel band with fold-over clasp
- Water resistant to 30 m (99 ft): In general, withstands splashes or brief immersion in water, but not suitable for swimming
4. Cartier Tank à Guichets: time through display windows
The 2025 return of the Tank à Guichets is the most unconventional pick in the group. Instead of conventional hands and an open dial, it shows jumping hours and scrolling minutes through apertures in the case. Fratello describes four variants: three regular precious-metal versions and a limited platinum edition of 200 pieces, whose hour and minute windows are offset.
Reported dimensions are 24.8 mm across, 37.6 mm lug-to-lug, and 6 mm thick. Its manually wound Cartier caliber 9755 MC is described as a modified Piaget 430P. The movement is 2.1 mm thick, runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour, and has a 43-hour power reserve.
Fratello’s June 2025 prices were US$47,700 for the regular gold versions, US$55,000 for the regular platinum model, and US$61,000 for the limited platinum edition. At the time of the article, Weppelink said the limited edition was most likely sold out; that is a time-specific observation, not a current stock check.

5. Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Small Seconds: a gold bracelet Reverso
This Reverso combines the familiar rectangular case with a grained 18K pink-gold dial, polished pink-gold hands and markers, and a rose-gold Milanese bracelet. Fratello reports dimensions of 27.4 by 45.6 mm and a 7.56 mm profile.
The bracelet is built from two twisted precious-metal threads that form a double layer of interlocking links, and it has an integrated sliding clasp. It gives the watch a more continuous, jewelry-like gold presence than a leather strap would. The hand-wound caliber 822 is 2.93 mm thick, runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour, and offers a 42-hour reserve. Fratello listed the June 2025 price as €44,800 including taxes.
Which of the five suits your priorities?
- For a traditional round watch: the Calatrava 6196P favors a restrained dial, while the Chopard adds a pointer date and a nine-day reserve.
- For a precious-metal bracelet: the Rolex pairs a yellow-gold case with the seven-row Settimo; the Reverso uses a distinctive rose-gold Milanese bracelet.
- For a different way to read time: the Tank à Guichets replaces standard hands with jumping-hour and scrolling-minute displays.
- For the longest stated power reserve: the Chopard’s reported 216 hours stands apart from the other four.
- For an automatic movement: the Rolex is the only automatic watch among these five; the other reported movements are hand-wound.
These distinctions make the list most useful as a set of contrasting design and ownership choices, rather than as a single best-to-worst ranking. See Fratello’s original article for its full retrospective.
