Lange & Söhne Lange 1. Its prices are historical asking-price observations from 2024—not current quotes, transaction data, or appraisals—so use the models as a shortlist and check live listings before deciding what to buy.
Jorg Weppelink’s seventh installment in Fratello’s pre-owned-watch series responds to rising list prices for new watches by highlighting choices at different price levels. The picks are not all obscure: they combine less-expected alternatives with models whose second-hand asking prices had come down. Read the original Fratello feature.
At a glance: five very different propositions
| Watch | Case dimensions | Movement and notable features | Fratello’s 2024 asking-price observation |

Every price in the table is an historical asking-price observation reported by Fratello in 2024. It is not a current market average or a recorded sale price. The feature does not establish today’s listings or values.
Rolex Datejust ref. 16018: a full-gold alternative to the Day-Date
Fratello’s less-expected pick is a 36 mm, full-gold Datejust. The 16018 offers the precious-metal look without being a Day-Date, and the article notes that it was sold with a wide variety of exotic dials. Simpler dial configurations could be less expensive, while strap and condition also affected the historical asking prices reported in the feature.
#1 Best Overall
- Pre-Loved Condition: Excellent; Light scratching to hardware
- 31mm
- Made in Switzerland
- Oysterclasp closure
- Signature upon delivery required
Its caliber 3035 has a quickset date, a practical detail for a vintage watch. Before comparing listings, check the exact dial, bracelet or strap, condition, and service documentation; a reference number alone does not make two examples equivalent.
IWC Portugieser ref. 3714: a dressier automatic chronograph
Introduced in 1998, the Portugieser 3714 replaced the rattrapante function of the earlier ref. 3712 with a conventional automatic chronograph. Fratello gives its stainless-steel case dimensions as 40.9 mm across, 12.6 mm thick, and 47 mm lug-to-lug. Those proportions make the lug-to-lug measurement especially useful to check if wrist fit is a concern.
The movement is caliber 79240, based on the Valjoux 7750. Fratello’s 2024 observation was roughly €3,500–€4,500 for examples, with a rose-gold version below €10,000. Those are dated asking prices, not a current quote for either configuration.
Breguet Type XX Transatlantique ref. 3820: a pilot-style chronograph
Breguet introduced the civilian Type XX ref. 3800 in 1995 and followed it with the ref. 3820 three years later. The 3820 adds a date in the six o’clock subdial and uses a brushed bezel rather than the polished bezel of the 3800. Fratello lists dimensions of 39.5 mm in diameter, 14.5 mm thick, and 45.5 mm long, with 20 mm between the lugs.

- Domed mineral crystal lens; light champagne dial with gold-tone hands and crystal accented markers
- Gold-tone adjustable link bracelet; fold over clasp with double push-button safety
- Inner band circumference: 7 inches
- Japanese quartz movement
- Case diameter: 36 millimeters
Its automatic caliber 582Q is based on Lemania 1372. Fratello reports a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and a 48-hour power reserve. The watch was offered on leather or a steel bracelet, and the article gives a 100 m water-resistance rating. Its reported €4,500–€7,000 range is a 2024 asking-price snapshot.
Omega Seamaster 60 “Big Crown”: a compact vintage diver
This late-1960s and early-1970s Seamaster is the smallest watch in the list: 37 mm across and just under 42 mm lug-to-lug. Fratello describes it as a vintage diver tested by Omega to 60 meters, suitable for snorkeling rather than a modern professional dive watch. Do not treat that historical test figure as assurance that a decades-old example remains water-resistant; condition and pressure testing of the individual watch matter.
Rank #4
The automatic caliber 565 has a date at three o’clock, runs at 19,800 vibrations per hour, and is reported with a 50-hour power reserve. Fratello describes black, burgundy, and dark-blue dial variants, all with Bakelite bezels and a steel bracelet, ref. 1069. The article’s €2,000–€4,500 range is historical and does not establish a current value.

The Lange 1 debuted in 1994 as part of the refounded company’s first collection. The white-gold ref. 101.039, with a silver dial, followed in 1999. Fratello lists a 38.5 mm diameter and 9.8 mm thickness. Its dial groups an outsize date, hours-and-minutes subdial, small seconds, and power-reserve display in an intentionally asymmetric layout.
The manual-winding L901.0 movement is reported at 21,600 vibrations per hour, with 53 jewels and a 72-hour power reserve. Fratello’s approximate €22,500–€35,000 asking-price range, reported in 2024, places it in a markedly different budget category from the other four watches.
How to use the list when shopping
The five watches are better compared by the kind of ownership and wear they offer than by the label “sleeper.” The Omega is a compact vintage diver, the IWC a relatively slim-for-a-chronograph Portugieser, and the Breguet a pilot-style chronograph with a stated 100 m rating. The Rolex is a full-gold date watch; the Lange is a high-end manual-wind watch with a distinctive dial and power-reserve display.
Quick Recap
- Start with the exact reference and configuration. Dial, case metal, bracelet or strap, and originality can change both appearance and asking price.
- Check fit beyond diameter. The IWC’s 47 mm lug-to-lug and Breguet’s 45.5 mm length offer useful context; thickness can also affect how a watch wears.
- Judge the actual listing, not the model’s reputation. Review condition, service records, originality, seller protections, and included accessories. Fratello’s feature does not verify those details for individual watches.
- Verify current prices independently. The 2024 figures are not current listings, market-wide statistics, or evidence of future value retention.
- Be cautious about water use with vintage pieces. A published historical rating or test does not establish the present condition of an individual watch.
