Fratello’s five outdoor-watch picks cover very different needs: dedicated dive functions, a chronograph, aviation calculations, and two ways to combine a GMT display with outdoor-oriented features. The roundup, published by Jorg Weppelink on January 31, 2025, is a selective list—not a head-to-head test or a claim that one watch suits every adventure. How to choose among these outdoor watches
Start with the job you want the watch to do, then consider size and how you will wear it. A dive rating alone does not make a watch the right tool for every outdoor activity, and the five picks are not interchangeable: one emphasizes dive tracking, another a chronograph, one aviation-oriented calculations, and the final two GMT functions paired with different features.
- For dive-specific functions: consider the Casio G-Shock Frogman MRG-BF1000 series.
- For a chronograph and high water-resistance rating: consider the Breitling Avenger B01 Chronograph 42 Night Mission.
- For light-powered timekeeping and aviation functions: consider the Citizen Promaster Geo Trekker.
- For a sport GMT: compare the Alpina Seastrong Diver Extreme Automatic GMT with the Seiko Alpinist GMT.
- For a more compact fit: compare the stated case dimensions before deciding; the Frogman is notably large, while the Alpina and Seiko have smaller stated diameters.
The details and article-date prices below are those reported by Fratello in January 2025. They are not verified current prices or a shared, independent test of the watches.
The five watches
1. Casio G-Shock Frogman MRG-BF1000 series
Fratello’s pick is the premium Frogman line, including the MRG-BF1000R-1A, MRG-BF1000E-1A9, and MRG-BF1000B-1A. The article describes it as an ISO 6425-compliant diver’s watch with a 200m diver rating. Its dive functions track dive time up to two hours and surface intervals up to 24 hours, store up to 30 log records, and include a tide graph. Tough Solar, Multi Band 6 radio adjustment, and Bluetooth accompany standard timekeeping functions.

Its reported dimensions—49.7mm wide, 56mm long, and 18.6mm thick—make it a substantial watch. Fratello’s listed price at publication was €5,800.
2. Breitling Avenger B01 Chronograph 42 Night Mission
Among the Night Mission versions, Fratello highlights the 42mm sand-colored model. It has a lightweight black ceramic case, carbon dial, sand-colored lume, and a 22mm military leather strap with a titanium folding clasp. The in-house B01 movement is COSC-certified, runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, has 45 jewels and a 70-hour power reserve, and drives a 12-hour chronograph and date display.

The watch is listed with a 300m depth rating and a 60-minute bezel scale. Fratello’s article-date price was €9,400.
3. Citizen Promaster Geo Trekker
This 46mm Promaster Sky model leans into aviation-oriented functions: an AM/PM indicator, day and date, power-reserve indication, UTC display, and slide-rule bezel. Its H864 Eco-Drive movement is light-powered, and Fratello describes its timekeeping as globally radio-controlled. One important restriction is that its multi-time functions cover only the Northern Hemisphere.

Fratello names three versions and reports dimensions of 46mm in diameter, 11.52mm thick, and 49.5mm lug-to-lug. The article-date price was €595.
4. Alpina Seastrong Diver Extreme Automatic GMT
This sport GMT draws on Alpina’s dive-watch line, but the featured configuration replaces a dive bezel with a 24-hour GMT bezel. Fratello therefore characterizes it as more of a GMT than a dive watch. It is reported to have 300m water resistance, a 39mm diameter, 46mm lug-to-lug length, and 12mm thickness.

Caliber AL-560 is based on the Sellita SW330-2 and has a 50-hour power reserve. Fratello listed the watch at €2,495 at publication.
5. Seiko Alpinist GMT SPB377 and SPB379
The 2023 SPB377 and SPB379 combine the Alpinist’s internal compass scale with a GMT function. Their stainless-steel cases are rated to 200m water resistance and measure 39.5mm in diameter, 13.6mm thick, and 46.4mm lug-to-lug. Seiko caliber 6R54 has a 72-hour power reserve.

The GMT hand can be set independently. Fratello describes this as an office GMT rather than a traveler’s GMT. The article-date price was €1,200.

What the list does—and does not—tell you
The five choices offer a useful way to match features to a particular kind of outing, but the list does not rank the watches under a shared testing protocol. The Frogman is the most explicitly dive-focused selection; the Breitling pairs a chronograph with a 300m rating; the Citizen centers on light-powered timekeeping and aviation displays; and the Alpina and Seiko offer different GMT configurations. The right choice depends on which of those functions matters to you, as well as whether the reported case dimensions suit your wrist and use.
