Introduced in 2014 for Patek Philippe’s 175th anniversary, the Grandmaster Chime Ref. 5175 is a 47 mm reversible wristwatch with 20 complications. Its two faces divide the job: one centers on time and chiming functions, while the other presents an instantaneous perpetual calendar. The CHF 2.5 million figure often associated with the watch was its reported 2014 launch retail price—not an established current market value.

Why the Ref. 5175 was a landmark

Patek Philippe presented the Ref. 5175 in October 2014 to mark 175 years of the manufacture. The company called it its most complicated wristwatch, combining 20 complications in a double-face case. The 2014 press release specifies a 47 mm diameter and four spring barrels. Patek Philippe’s October 2014 press release

The scale of the movement is also documented in the manufacturer’s launch video: its description gives 1,366 parts and six patented innovations. Those figures refer to the 2014 watch, not a general specification for every Grandmaster Chime reference. Patek Philippe’s official Ref. 5175 video

How the reversible case works

The 5175 has two usable dials rather than a conventional front and a hidden display. One side emphasizes the time and sonnerie; turn the case over and the reverse side focuses on the instantaneous perpetual calendar, including a four-digit year display. A mechanism in the lugs lets the case turn over and secures it in either position, according to Patek Philippe. Patek Philippe’s 2014 technical description

This arrangement makes the case part of the watch’s interface: the wearer chooses which group of information faces outward. It is not simply a second time display on the caseback.

What complications does the Grandmaster Chime have?

The 20-complication total covers a broad set of timekeeping, calendar and acoustic functions. Patek Philippe’s 2014 list includes the following notable functions:

  • Grande and Petite Sonnerie: chiming modes that sound the hours and, depending on the mode, the quarters as time passes.
  • Minute repeater: sounds the time on demand.
  • Instantaneous perpetual calendar: presents calendar information, including a four-digit year display, on the reverse dial.
  • Second time zone: provides a second-zone time function.
  • Acoustic alarm: strikes the alarm time rather than merely producing a conventional alert.
  • Date repeater: sounds the date on demand.

The acoustic alarm and date repeater are especially unusual: Patek Philippe described them as patented global firsts in chiming watches. The company’s current overview describes the Grandmaster Chime family as having five chiming modes; that family-level description should not be confused with a count of the watch’s total complications. How much did the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime 5175 cost?

Monochrome Watches reported a retail price of CHF 2.5 million at the Ref. 5175’s 2014 launch and said six examples were available for purchase. This is a historical launch figure, not a current asking price or valuation. Monochrome Watches’ 2014 launch coverage

Patek Philippe’s 2014 video description says seven examples exist. The available-for-purchase count in the contemporary report and the manufacturer’s total-example count are different figures; neither establishes a present-day sale price. A 2026 Country Life feature reported that none of the original seven had appeared at auction by the time of publication. That is a dated account, not a guarantee about auction activity after publication, and it does not establish a current secondary-market value. How many Ref. 5175 watches were made?

Patek Philippe’s official 2014 video description says seven examples exist. Monochrome’s contemporaneous launch report gives six as available for purchase. The sources therefore distinguish the reported total from the smaller number offered commercially at launch; they do not explain the status of the remaining example. How does the Ref. 5175 compare with the Ref. 6300?

The Ref. 5175 is the 2014 anniversary model. Country Life identifies the Ref. 6300 as a later Grandmaster Chime variant released in 2016. The available sources do not support a complete specification-by-specification comparison or a current price comparison, so the references should not be treated as interchangeable versions with fully established differences here.
