Fred Mandelbaum’s path to Breitling history began with chronographs used as work tools in the electronics industry. Today, he is known as @watchfred, a vintage chronograph collector whose historical knowledge has also informed Breitling heritage projects. In a 2024 Time+Tide interview, the watch on his wrist was a 1943/44 Breitling Duograph—a split-seconds chronograph with an unusual 45-minute counter and pulsations scale.
Who is Fred Mandelbaum?
Fred Mandelbaum, known to watch enthusiasts as @watchfred, is a vintage chronograph collector and Breitling historian. Time+Tide’s 2 August 2024 profile describes him as having moved from collecting vintage Breitling watches to working with the brand in an official heritage capacity. That is the publication’s description, not a formal job title supplied by Breitling.
His interest in chronographs grew from practical experience. In a WatchTime interview published on 4 November 2024, Mandelbaum recalled using chronographs as work tools in the electronics industry during the 1980s. Electronics products could quickly become obsolete; mechanical watches, by contrast, could remain functional for decades. That contrast helped turn a utilitarian interest into a deeper fascination with mechanical chronographs.
How did collecting lead to Breitling heritage work?
Mandelbaum’s approach to collecting centers on understanding a subject rather than accumulating a target number of watches. In WatchTime, he put it this way: “For me, collecting is more than just hoarding objects – it’s about understanding and depth.” He described wanting to learn the background and influences behind the watches he collects.

- Breitling Caliber B20
- Self-winding Automatic Movement, COSC Chronometer Certified
- 200 Meters / 660 Feet Water-Resistant
A 2019 Crown Watch Blog interview offers a concrete example of how that historical knowledge reached Breitling’s modern work. Mandelbaum said CEO Georges Kern enlisted him as a consultant in 2017. He discussed contributing to the Navitimer Ref. 806 1959 Re-edition, a project that he said took about a year of reconstruction and close attention to small design differences. This account is Mandelbaum’s interview recollection; it does not establish his current employment title.
In a separate profile, Fratello traces his broader vintage-watch interests to a new Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox he bought in the 1980s, followed by an interest in Vulcain Cricket wrist alarms and vintage watches. Fratello identifies a Girard-Perregaux EP04 as his first vintage chronograph. The profile also recounts his help with collectors’ authenticity questions, but it is not an authentication certificate for any particular watch.

What watch was Mandelbaum wearing in the interview?
Time+Tide identified the watch in its 2 August 2024 interview as a 1943/44 Breitling Duograph. The article describes it as one of Breitling’s early water-resistant rattrapante chronographs. “Rattrapante” means split-seconds: the chronograph has a second hand that can be stopped separately to record an intermediate time while the main chronograph hand continues.
According to Time+Tide, the Duograph’s dial combines twin registers, running seconds, a 45-minute counter and an outer pulsations scale. The scale was intended to measure heart rates. The interview calls the watch a 1943 Duograph in one passage and labels the pictured example 1943/44, so 1943/44 is the most careful date for the specific watch shown.

What makes the Duograph notable?
The Duograph’s appeal in this interview is not simply its age. Its split-seconds mechanism adds a timing function beyond a standard chronograph, while the 45-minute counter and pulsations scale make the layout distinctive. Time+Tide’s account situates it within Breitling’s early water-resistant rattrapante chronographs; those historical and model details are specific to that publication’s description.
For a vintage-watch collector, a complicated dial and an intriguing reference are starting points for investigation, not proof of originality or condition. Anyone comparing vintage Breitling examples should examine the model or reference identification, originality of components, case and dial condition, service history, provenance and the quality of available documentation. Mandelbaum’s profile and interviews support the importance of historical context and authenticity questions, but they do not provide live listings, current market prices or a ranking of watches to buy.
