The family story behind the name reaches further back, but the brand’s own timeline dates its current form to that late-1980s project. Peter Stas is best described here as a co-founder; sources use different leadership titles and time frames, so “President” should not be treated as a verified current title.
From family watchmaking associations to a new collection
The name Frederique Constant joins two family names: Frederique Schreiner (1881–1969) and Constant Stas (1880–1967). Citizen UK describes Peter Stas as a fourth-generation descendant of Constant Stas, whose business made printed clock dials for the watch industry from 1904. That ancestry is context, not the founding date of Frederique Constant: the company says its modern form began in 1988, when Aletta and Peter Stas began designing their own collection.
The first collection, the 18th Century Collection, arrived in 1992. Its Swiss movements were assembled by a Geneva watchmaker, an early production arrangement distinct from the in-house calibre development the company would later pursue. The brand’s official chronology records both milestones in its history.
How Heart Beat became an early signature
In 1994 Frederique Constant introduced its first Heart Beat model. An opening at 12 o’clock exposed part of the mechanical movement around the balance, making the watch’s “heart” visible on the dial. The company says the design later became a brand signature. It was a visual identity built around showing a working mechanical component, rather than concealing the movement entirely behind the dial.

The company moved to Carouge, Geneva, in 1997 and exhibited at Baselworld for the first time. It later shifted to a larger production site in Chêne-Bourg around 2000–2001. Pim Koeslag joined the development team in 2001, shortly before the brand’s next major steps in broadening its activities and developing movements.
Two different steps: Alpina and in-house movement development
2002: adding Alpina
In 2002, Aletta and Peter Stas acquired and revived Alpina Watches. The stated aim was to add sports watches to the group’s offering. This expanded the business beyond Frederique Constant’s own collection; it was a group-building move, not a movement milestone.

2004: the first Manufacture calibre
In 2004, Frederique Constant launched the FC-910, which the company identifies as its first Manufacture calibre, developed and assembled in-house. The model retained the Heart Beat idea but moved the opening to six o’clock. Citizen’s 2016 acquisition announcement said that the brand had produced 19 different versions of in-house calibres since 2004; that is Citizen’s figure in that specific 2016 release, not a current count.
“Manufacture” describes a capability and product line, not every watch the company makes. The first collection, for example, used Swiss movements assembled by a Geneva watchmaker. The company’s subsequent collection history includes both Manufacture models and other directions, so the FC-910 should be understood as an important development in the brand’s movement work—not proof that all Frederique Constant watches use in-house calibres.

A Geneva manufacture and a wider range of ideas
The Plan-les-Ouates Manufacture building opened in 2006. The company’s later milestones show how its ambitions extended beyond the original Heart Beat concept: it introduced a Tourbillon Manufacture limited edition, created Ateliers deMonaco, and launched the Runabout collection between 2008 and 2012. The Classic Worldtimer Manufacture followed with 24 reference-city time zones and functions set by the crown.
In 2015, Frederique Constant introduced a Swiss-made connected watch with an analog dial, an electronic module on a quartz calibre, and a connection to its smartwatch app. The move added connected functionality to a traditional watch format rather than replacing the dial with a screen. The company’s timeline records a later sequence of experiments—including a Flyback Chronograph Manufacture, Classic Hybrid Manufacture, Smartwatch Vitality, and Slimline Monolithic Manufacture—along with a 2019 expansion of the Plan-les-Ouates site and a public Manufacture Experience museum.

What Citizen’s 2016 acquisition changed
On May 26, 2016, Citizen Watch Co., Ltd. announced an agreement to acquire Frederique Constant Holding SA. The group comprised Frederique Constant, Alpina, and DeMonaco. Citizen said existing management personnel and staff would keep their positions after the acquisition, framing the deal as a change in ownership with planned continuity in the company’s people and operations.
Aletta and Peter Stas explained their decision in Citizen’s announcement: “As we feel a tremendous commitment to the Frederique Constant Group and its people, we started to explore a potential collaboration to secure the company beyond ourselves.” The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry reported in June 2016 that the founders would remain in their positions for a minimum of five years. It also put the brand’s annual production and sales at 150,000 pieces at that time; this is a historical 2016 figure, not a current output estimate.

The acquisition therefore marked a succession and ownership transition, rather than an announced immediate departure by the founders. Citizen’s release described the continuing roles of management and staff, while the founders presented the partnership as a way to secure the group beyond themselves. Those statements describe the 2016 arrangement and should not be read as a guarantee of today’s staffing or leadership structure.

The available accounts do not establish “President” as Peter Stas’s current title. Citizen’s 2016 announcement identifies Aletta and Peter Stas as founders of Frederique Constant Holding SA, and the Swiss watch industry federation described them as remaining in their positions for a minimum of five years. The brand’s timeline names Niels Eggerding as Managing Director from 2018, while a Citizen UK profile calls Peter Stas Managing Director of Frederique Constant S.A. These references may describe different dates or scopes; neither should be silently turned into an unqualified current “President” title.
The clearest historical account is that Peter Stas co-founded Frederique Constant with Aletta, helped shape its early development, and was part of the leadership transition around the 2016 Citizen acquisition. The company’s official chronology is available at Frederique Constant’s history page; Citizen’s acquisition announcement is available at Citizen’s May 26, 2016 release; the federation’s contemporaneous industry report is at FH’s June 9, 2016 report; and the family-name and role profile appears on Citizen UK’s Frederique Constant profile.
