If you want to look beyond Swiss watches, these six French-brand models offer very different reasons to do it: compact proportions, practical water resistance, vintage-inspired dress-watch details, or an unusual regatta chronograph. They are not interchangeable substitutes. The dimensions, water resistance, crystal, movement version and condition matter more than the country on the dial.

How to choose among them
For a small, refined daily watch: Baltic Hermétique Tourer
At 37mm with a 46mm lug-to-lug measurement, the Tourer is the smallest practical all-rounder in this group. Its 150m water resistance and legible lume suit everyday wear, while its polish gives it a dressier look than a conventional field watch. The publication notes quick-release bracelet and strap options, but also a crown that sits nearly flush and can be awkward to wind by hand, limited anti-reflective coating and basic clasps.

For a vintage-inspired dress watch: Baltic MR01
The MR01 is the slimmest of the six at 9.9mm, with a 36mm case, a sand-textured dial, offset small seconds and Breguet-style numerals. Hesalite and a display caseback reinforce its vintage character. That crystal scratches more readily than sapphire, and its 30m water resistance calls for care around water; it is not the choice here for swimming or water-focused use.
For a compact everyday diver: Baltic Aquascaphe
The Aquascaphe pairs a 39mm case with 200m water resistance, a sandwich dial, BGW9 lume and a sapphire bezel insert. Its 47mm lug-to-lug measurement is worth checking against your wrist, even though the diameter is moderate. The no-date display and mostly brushed finish are deliberate design traits rather than complications to overlook.

For a diver with a more unusual bezel: Serica 5303-2
The 5303-2 is rated to 300m and uses a bezel combining elapsed-time and 12-hour reference scales. Its listed dimensions are 39mm across and 12.2mm thick. Movement generation is important: the publication’s review example used an earlier Soprod Newton, while it reports that newer examples use a revised Soprod M100. Confirm the movement in the exact watch listing, and consider the article’s noted bracelet-finishing and clasp drawbacks.

The Douglas Reissue measures 40mm by 48mm lug-to-lug and is about 11mm thick, with 100m water resistance. The automatic version uses a Miyota 8215; a quartz version uses Seiko’s VH31. Its worldtime-style bezel is not a true worldtimer, and the watch has a roulette date and cyclops. The article describes a possible Neil Armstrong connection as murky, so it should not be treated as verified provenance.

For a distinctive pre-owned chronograph: Yema Yachtingraf Heritage
The Yachtingraf’s regatta-style dial is deliberately busy, and its 15.35mm thickness makes it substantially taller than the other options. The publication notes that the hands can be difficult to distinguish in some conditions and reports mechanical quirks in its own experience. Since it is discussed as a secondary-market watch, assess the exact version, service history and condition rather than assuming every listing is equivalent.
What to verify before buying
- Fit: Compare lug-to-lug length and thickness with a watch you already wear comfortably; diameter alone does not determine how a watch sits.
- Water use: Match the stated water resistance to your intended use. The MR01’s 30m rating is notably different from the 200m Aquascaphe and 300m Serica.
- Crystal and bezel: The MR01’s Hesalite is more scratch-prone than sapphire. Check the exact crystal and bezel materials on the production version you are considering.
- Movement generation: The Serica 5303-2 changed movement across versions according to the article; verify the movement listed for the specific watch.
- Bracelet and strap fit: Check the clasp, adjustment range, spring-bar style and exact strap compatibility before relying on quick-release or replacement-strap options.
- Condition and service: For a pre-owned Yachtingraf, request clear photographs, service records where available and a return policy; have a watchmaker assess it if the condition or operation is uncertain.
- Price and availability: Treat the cited figures as the article’s 2026 reported ranges, not current market quotes. Confirm the seller’s current price, included accessories, condition and warranty.
Why consider French brands at all?
These six models make the case through variety rather than a single national style: a compact field-oriented watch, a small dress watch, two distinct divers, a skindiver-inspired model and a regatta chronograph. As Kaz Mirza puts it in the source article, “There’s nothing wrong with defaulting to Swiss watches.” The useful alternative is simply to compare each watch on its own merits—fit, design, specifications and the particular production version—rather than treating its country of origin as a substitute for those checks.
