Michael Peñate’s favorite of Panerai’s new 42 mm Luminor trio is the black-dial steel PAM01710—but his comparison with his own 44 mm PAM00777 stops short of a verdict on wrist feel. He has not seen the new watch in person, so the key question is whether the smaller case keeps the wrist presence he values in a Luminor.
What is changing in the new Luminor?
In a September 22, 2026 review for Two Broke Watch Snobs, Michael Peñate compares his personally owned 44 mm Luminor Base Logo PAM00777 with three new 42 mm references: PAM01710, PAM01711, and PAM01714. The review reports that each is 13.8 mm thick and rated to 500 m water resistance. Those are figures reported by the review, not independently confirmed official specifications.

The two-millimeter reduction is the point of the comparison, not proof that the new watches will wear smaller in every respect. Peñate says, “I think 42mm might be where I draw the line,” but also wonders whether the reduced diameter makes the watch lose some of its characteristic presence. Case dimensions alone cannot settle that question.

What design details carry the Luminor identity?
Peñate describes a matte dial with large printed numerals, a small-seconds display at nine, and the familiar crown-protection bridge. He also notes that these versions do not use sandwich-dial construction. In his account, the combination recalls Panerai’s early civilian watches from 1993, including the Luminor Ref. 5218-201/A and Luminor Marina Militare Ref. 5218-202/A. These are the reviewer’s design and historical comparisons.
The review’s argument is that a smaller diameter need not mean abandoning the recognizable visual cues: the crown guard, oversized numerals, and restrained dial remain central to the presentation. Whether those elements feel convincing at 42 mm is a wrist-level judgment the article cannot make without a try-on.

What movement and water resistance does the review report?
According to Peñate, the watches use an automatic P.980 movement measuring 4.2 mm thick, running at 28,800 vibrations per hour, with a 72-hour power reserve. He also reports a solid caseback and a 500 m water-resistance rating for the watches. The movement details and specifications are reported by the review; the retrieved coverage does not independently verify them through an official Panerai product page.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes the PAM01710 make sense for someone considering the PAM00777?
For Peñate, the PAM01710 combines the colorway he prefers with a case size that may be more manageable than his 44 mm PAM00777. The reported 500 m rating also gives the smaller model the sort of capability he associates with Panerai. That is his personal assessment, not a claim that the watches are interchangeable in fit or use.

The practical choice depends on what you want to preserve from the larger watch. If wrist presence is the reason you chose a 44 mm Luminor, a 42 mm model needs to be tried on before you assume it delivers the same effect. If the dial, crown guard, and overall Luminor design matter more than maximum diameter, the PAM01710 is the version Peñate favors on paper. He ends with the necessary caveat: “I still need to see one in person.”
