Lug-to-lug measures from the tip of the upper lug to the tip of the lower lug; it is a useful fit check, not a universal size rule. Wrist shape, lug curve, case thickness and bracelet end links all affect how a watch wears.
What lug-to-lug means
Lug-to-lug is the watch’s tip-to-tip length along the 12-to-6 axis, including the lugs. It is not the case diameter, nor the distance between the spring bars. The lug²lug glossary describes it as the distance between the tips of a watch’s top and bottom lugs, which helps determine how the watch sits on a wrist: lug²lug glossary.
Measure your wrist before choosing a size
1. Measure circumference
Measure around your wrist at the spot where you normally wear a watch. Use a flexible tape, or wrap a strip of paper around your wrist, mark where it meets, then measure the strip against a ruler.
2. Measure the flat width
At the same spot, measure across the top of your wrist from side to side. This width is a more direct first check for lug overhang than circumference: two wrists with the same circumference can have different shapes and flat widths. A circumference-to-width estimate is only approximate, so measure the width directly when you can. The lug²lug wrist-fit tool explains its chart as a rule of thumb rather than a guarantee.

- 【Instruction manual】The instruction manual(in English) combines pictures and text to explain to you in detail the right way to use the tool, avoiding wrong operation to damage your watch, and helping you to solve watch problems at home.
3. Find the watch’s lug-to-lug
Look for the published lug-to-lug measurement in the watch’s specifications. If it is not listed, measure in a straight line from the outer tip of the upper lugs to the outer tip of the lower lugs. A caliper is the most accurate tool identified in the lug²lug measuring guide; for an initial estimate, a ruler may be enough.
Compare the dimensions, then inspect the design
Start by comparing lug-to-lug with your flat wrist width. If the lugs extend beyond the flat area, the watch may overhang. A close match is a useful screening point, not a promise of comfort or appearance: lug shape and the rest of the watch can change its effective fit.

- Lug shape: Curved or downturned lugs may follow the wrist more closely than straight lugs of the same length.
- Case diameter: This helps describe the watch’s visual presence, but it does not determine lug overhang by itself.
- Thickness: A thicker case sits higher and may feel more top-heavy or be less comfortable under a cuff.
- Bracelet end links: A rigid end link can extend the watch’s effective footprint beyond the case. Strap construction can also change how the watch sits and feels.
When possible, inspect photos from several angles or try the watch on, particularly if it has long, straight lugs, a thick case or rigid end links. A printable visual sizing guide can help you judge appearance, but it cannot replace checking the actual dimensions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use wrist-size charts as starting points, not rules
Published charts do not establish one ideal lug-to-lug size for each wrist circumference. For example, a lug²lug guide suggests around 47 mm for a 6.5-inch wrist, while the site’s circumference-based fit tool gives a different estimate using approximate flat-width assumptions. These are commercial sizing guides, not a formal ergonomic standard or universal recommendations. See the lug²lug wrist-size guide and compare any chart result with your own flat-width measurement.
