It was also sold with a white “Polar” dial. Across its run, the 16570 received production updates and appeared with two movements, so a specific example’s condition and configuration matter more than its dial color or year alone.
What the black-dial 16570 is
Rolex introduced the Explorer II 16570 in 1989, replacing the 16550, and continued the reference until 2011. The 216570 succeeded it that year with a larger case. The 16570 was offered in black and white-dial versions; “Polar” is the familiar nickname for the white variant. Fratello and Chrono24 cover the reference’s history and variants.
The 16570’s appeal is partly its restrained steel sports-watch design and the contrast of the black dial with the fixed 24-hour bezel. Those are aesthetic qualities, not objective advantages: some buyers prefer the white dial’s brighter look and visibility. Neither version is inherently the better choice.
Movements and production changes
Calibre 3185 and later 3186
The 16570 was made with calibre 3185 and, in later examples, calibre 3186. Sources differ on the transition year: Fratello gives 2007, while Chrono24 gives 2006. Treat the dates as approximate rather than assuming a precise year-based cutoff; for an individual watch, have its movement verified by a qualified watchmaker.

Fratello describes the 3185 as a flyer GMT movement with an independently adjustable 12-hour hand and approximately 48 hours of power reserve. Its reviewer notes that the hour hand may wobble somewhat while being set, without functional consequences. That is the reviewer’s technical description, rather than a current Rolex specification for every 16570.
Other changes across the run
Chrono24 places several production changes across an approximate 1999–2006 period: the transition from tritium to Super-LumiNova, the removal of drilled lugs, the introduction of solid end links, and rehaut engraving. These are useful clues, not a substitute for checking the actual watch. Configuration can vary, and a claimed year or feature should be supported by the watch and its documentation.

Bracelets also differ. On the specific 2004 black-dial watch Fratello reviewed, the bracelet had solid end links, hollow center links, and a stamped clasp with micro-adjustment holes. Do not assume that exact combination describes every 16570. The reviewer found the bracelet lighter and less precise in feel than a modern Rolex bracelet, while regarding that example’s solid end links as more substantial; this is a personal assessment, not a universal test result.
Black dial or white “Polar”?
Choose by appearance and by the quality of the particular watch, not by a claim that one dial is categorically superior. Fratello’s author prefers the black version in person, citing its depth and contrast against the steel bezel. That is an individual preference. The white dial offers a noticeably different, brighter presentation.

For a comparison between two actual listings, look at the following factors together:
- Dial: Decide which appearance and legibility you prefer in ordinary lighting.
- Configuration: Compare the movement and production details claimed for each watch with its actual features and documentation.
- Condition and originality: Assess the dial, hands, case, bezel, and bracelet, and ask whether any parts have been replaced.
- Service evidence: Request dated records and clarify what work was performed.
- Completeness and seller terms: Compare bracelet links, accessories, return terms, and seller protections, rather than treating a “full set” as proof of condition or authenticity.
- Price evidence: Compare like-for-like examples in your region and distinguish asking prices from completed sales or platform estimates.
What current price estimates can—and cannot—tell you
WatchCharts listed an estimated overall 16570 market price of A$11,505 as of October 6, 2026. That is a model-level platform estimate, not a verified sale price and not a black-dial-only figure. The same page separately listed estimates of A$10,864 for the black-dial variation and A$12,255 for the white-dial variation; these, too, are estimates rather than confirmed transaction prices. See the WatchCharts 16570 page for its variation figures.

- Compatibility & Size: Bezel Insert compatible with 40MM Rolex Explorer II 16570 Watch in stainless steel.
- Ensure Perfect Fit: Verify the size, color, and model compatibility with your specific watch before purchasing to ensure a perfect fit and avoid returns or exchanges.
- Compatibility Check: Double-check your watch's requirements and compatibility details to ensure the product meets your needs. This will help you avoid any issues with returns or exchanges.
- Aftermarket Product: This is an aftermarket/generic made to original factory specs for a precise fit.
Use estimates as a starting point, not a verdict on a particular listing. Condition, originality, service history, bracelet completeness, included accessories, location, and seller protections all affect the comparison. Fratello has observed that white-dial examples have often commanded somewhat more on the used market, but that broad observation does not establish a guaranteed current premium.

Chrono24 advises close inspection and notes that watches with their corresponding accessories can be found; a watch missing its full set should be priced accordingly. A box and papers may help document provenance, but they do not replace inspection of the watch itself.

- Request clear, current photographs. Ask for detailed views of the dial, hands, bezel, case sides and lugs, bracelet, clasp, and movement documentation. Confirm that the pictures show the exact watch offered.
- Check the claimed configuration. Compare the serial-era and production details the seller states with visible features, while allowing for approximate transition periods. Do not infer the calibre solely from the year in a listing.
- Assess condition and originality. Ask about polishing, replaced components, damage, and prior repairs. If originality is important to you, have an expert assess the parts rather than relying on listing language.
- Review service records and completeness. Request dated service documentation and a clear inventory of bracelet links and accessories. Factor omissions or uncertain service history into your decision.
- Use independent expertise for a high-value purchase. Arrange an inspection with a qualified watch specialist and verify the seller’s return and dispute protections before paying.

How the 16570 differs from its successor
The 216570 that replaced the 16570 in 2011 is the larger successor generation. Rolex’s brochure for the 216570 specifies a 42 mm case and calibre 3187, with a 24-hour display, independently rapid-setting hour hand, and approximately 48-hour power reserve. Those specifications apply to the successor, not the 16570. The distinction matters when comparing listings or researching parts and specifications.
