G-Shock MR-G: How the Collection Combines Japanese Tradition and Modern Watchmaking

G-SHOCK’s MR-G collection brings together the line’s shock-resistant watch design, Japanese craft influences, detailed metal finishing and modern materials. It is a family of watches rather than one uniform design: the MRG-B2100 draws on kigumi interlocking woodwork, while the MRG-B5000 reworks the original square G-SHOCK in a complex metal construction.

What MR-G means within G-SHOCK

Casio presents MR-G as its flagship G-SHOCK line. Its collection includes the MRG-B2000/B1000, MRG-B2100, MRG-B5000 and MRG-BF1000 families, so the shared idea of combining Japanese craft traditions with contemporary technology takes different forms across the range. Casio also names Yamagata Casio in its discussion of craftsmanship.

The result is not simply a traditional motif applied to a modern watch. MR-G models use G-SHOCK design cues and shock-resistant construction as a starting point, then distinguish themselves through their materials, finishing, case and band construction, and model-specific features.

How the MRG-B2100 draws on kigumi

Interlocking woodwork translated into a dial

The MRG-B2100’s design concept takes inspiration from kigumi, the Japanese practice of joining pieces of wood through interlocking forms. Casio describes the family as combining traditional aesthetics, materials and artisanal craftwork with a compact, comfortable form and multi-component construction.

On the MRG-B2100B, Casio describes a corrugated geometric lattice pattern on the dial. Its openings let light reach the watch for solar power generation, making the pattern both a visual reference and part of the watch’s functional design. The MRG-B2100D-2A uses dimensional latticework that Casio says evokes kigumi; its dial is rendered in hanada-iro blue.

A distinctive example, not a description of every MR-G

The kigumi reference belongs to the MRG-B2100 design story. Other MR-G families have different lineages and details, so it should not be treated as a collection-wide motif.

How the MRG-B5000 updates the original square

Familiar face, different construction

The MRG-B5000 preserves visual details associated with the original square G-SHOCK: the brick-patterned face and red line. Casio calls it a “true heir” to that model’s identity. The case and exterior, however, are built as a multi-component metal design rather than a straightforward copy of the original’s construction.

Casio says the MRG-B5000 bezel consists of 25 components. For the model described on its product page, the top bezel uses COBARION, the band uses DAT55G, and the case, back cover and buttons use Ti64 titanium alloy. Casio also lists solar power, smartphone link, radio control, sapphire crystal and 20-bar water resistance for that described MRG-B5000. Confirm those details against the exact model suffix: specifications and materials can vary among versions.

Materials and finishing claims

Casio describes COBARION as having hardness about four times that of pure titanium and DAT55G as about three times as hard as pure titanium. These are manufacturer comparisons, not independent test findings. Casio also describes titanium carbide finishing on one variant and DLC coating on another; those finishes should not be assumed to apply to every MRG-B5000.

How to compare MR-G models

Start with the design lineage, then compare the exact construction and functions of the model you are considering. A family name alone does not establish that two watches share the same materials, finish or features.

What the product descriptions can—and cannot—tell you

Casio’s product pages explain the intended design, construction and listed specifications, but they are manufacturer descriptions. They do not establish independent comparative durability results or long-term ownership performance. The reviewed material also does not establish repair costs, comfort across wrist sizes, resale value or buyer satisfaction. Those questions require evidence beyond a design concept or a materials specification.
