Choose the Mudmaster GWG-B1000 if you want an analog-digital rugged watch with a compass, barometer, altimeter, thermometer, solar charging and radio-controlled timekeeping. Choose the Rangeman GPR-H1000 if you want built-in GPS, optical heart-rate measurement and training data. Both are rated for 20-bar water resistance and shock and dust/mud resistance, so toughness does not separate them. The real differences are how each one is used and how each one is charged.
Confirm you are comparing the right models
G-SHOCK names are easy to confuse. The Mudmaster in this comparison is the GWG-B1000. The Rangeman is the GPR-H1000, the GPS and heart-rate model. Casio’s Master of G collection also lists two related models that people often mix up with these:
- GW-9500 MUDMAN. This is a Mudman, not a Mudmaster. Mudman and Mudmaster are separate model families.
- GW-9400 RANGEMAN. This is a different Rangeman from the GPR-H1000. Check the reference number before buying.
Every specification below refers to the GWG-B1000 and the GPR-H1000 only, as listed on Casio’s official G-SHOCK product pages. Regional availability and reference numbers can differ, so confirm the exact model code on the box or the Casio site for your market.
Which G-SHOCK fits your use?
Use the following as a working guide rather than a verdict on which watch is better overall.
#1 Best Overall
- MUDMASTER Built for Extreme Environments – Rugged construction is engineered to resist mud, dust, shock, dirt, and debris, making the GG1000-1A5 ready for demanding outdoor conditions.
- Twin Sensor Compass & Thermometer – Built-in digital compass measures direction across 16 points and 0° to 359°, while the thermometer measures temperatures from 14°F to 140°F (-10°C to 60°C).
- Shock Resistant & 200M Water Resistant – Legendary G-SHOCK toughness combines shock-resistant construction with 200-meter water resistance for dependable performance during outdoor adventures and demanding work.
- Super Illuminator LED Backlight – High-brightness white LED backlight features an auto light switch, selectable 1.5- or 3-second illumination, and afterglow for improved visibility in low-light environments.
- World Time & Advanced Timekeeping – Includes world time across 31 time zones and 48 cities, a 1/100-second stopwatch, 60-minute countdown timer, 5 daily alarms, snooze alarm, and full auto-calendar through 2099.
- Pick the Mudmaster if you want a watch that reads like a traditional G-SHOCK, with analog hands and a digital layer, plus environmental readings (compass, barometer, altimeter, thermometer). It is also the better match if you want solar charging and radio-controlled time and do not need satellite positioning.
- Pick the Rangeman if your main interest is GPS position, distance and speed, heart-rate measurement, activity tracking or training analysis. It is also the better fit if you are comfortable charging by USB on a regular schedule.
- Pick neither for phone-free route work without checking first. Both models rely on smartphone pairing for some of their features, and the Rangeman moves more route and life-log review into its app.
Which G-SHOCK is better for hiking?
For hiking, the answer depends on what you need on the trail. If you want to know where you are, how high you have climbed and what the weather is doing without carrying a phone, the Mudmaster’s compass, barometer and altimeter cover that job. If you want to log a route, see your distance and speed in real time, and track heart rate over a day of walking, the Rangeman’s built-in GPS and optical heart-rate sensor cover that job. Casio does not publish a field comparison of accuracy between the two, so judge each feature against the way you actually hike.
Charging is the difference that matters most
The two watches are powered differently, and this affects long trips more than any other spec.

Mudmaster GWG-B1000: Tough Solar and radio timekeeping
The Mudmaster uses Casio’s Tough Solar system, which charges from light, and it keeps time with Multiband 6 radio control. Casio’s product page presents solar power as the way the watch stays running, so a sunny day outdoors is the normal charging routine.
Rangeman GPR-H1000: USB for GPS and training, solar for the clock
The Rangeman charges in two ways. Its GPS, training and smart functions are charged over USB. Solar-assisted charging supports the time display. Casio’s product page makes this split explicit, so solar charging alone does not sustain the Rangeman’s GPS and training features. For a multi-day trip, plan USB charging, or keep the GPS and training functions off and rely on the time display.

Mudmaster GWG-B1000: who it suits
The Mudmaster is the better match for readers who want a sensor-led G-SHOCK in a traditional analog-digital layout. Its solar charging means that routine daylight is enough for everyday running, and radio control keeps the time set without manual adjustment. It suits field use where environmental readings matter but satellite tracking does not. If you do not want a watch that depends on USB charging, it is the simpler choice.

Rangeman GPR-H1000: who it suits
The Rangeman is the better match for readers who want measurement built into the watch. GPS gives position, distance and speed. The optical heart-rate sensor and activity tracking supply training data, and Casio’s product page lists six sensors. It suits people who will connect the watch to their phone and charge it regularly. If you find that a daily charge is a nuisance, the Mudmaster’s solar routine will likely suit you better.
Launch context
Casio’s editorial material says the GPR-H1000 was released in January 2024, after the GW-9500 and GWG-B1000. Casio describes the Rangeman’s larger MIP display and explains that the Bluetooth link moves some route, altitude and life-log review into the phone app. This is the manufacturer’s description of its own design, not independent evidence of how the watch performs in the field.

Limits of this comparison
This comparison is built from Casio’s published specifications and editorial material. Casio’s pages do not report controlled testing of accuracy, battery life or durability for either watch, and no independent comparative test was available for this article. For that reason, this article does not rank either watch as more accurate, more durable or better overall. Prices, stock and regional versions change, so check the Casio G-SHOCK site for your market before you buy.
If you still cannot decide, use the feature you would miss most. If it is satellite positioning and heart-rate data, buy the Rangeman. If it is solar charging, radio-controlled time and environmental readings in a traditional G-SHOCK layout, buy the Mudmaster.
