Yes—some Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic owners experienced severe battery drain, failed wrist detection, broken health sensors, Always-On Display problems, and lag after the December 2025 rollout of One UI 8 Watch, based on Wear OS 6. Samsung later released a corrective update in January 2026 with the January security patch and stability improvements. Before assuming your watch is permanently damaged, check whether it is running that later software.
What happened to the Galaxy Watch 4?
The reported failure was associated primarily with the initial One UI 8 Watch update for the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. The update, based on Wear OS 6, began rolling out in December 2025.

Some owners said battery life fell from roughly a full day to only 12–15 hours. Others reported much more extreme drain. These figures come from user reports rather than controlled testing, so they do not establish how widespread the problem was or prove that every battery failure was software-related.
Reports also described wrist detection stopping, repeated PIN locking, unavailable ECG and body-composition measurements, Always-On Display failures, watch faces that would not load, lag, and charging-related problems. Coverage from 9to5Google and Android Authority documented the reports.

Which watches were affected?
The affected product family was the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. The available evidence does not establish that every unit was affected, and it does not show that Bluetooth and LTE versions experienced the problem equally. Model-specific behavior may vary by region, carrier, and firmware build.
This was not evidence that Samsung recalled the watches or permanently destroyed every sensor. A cluster of user reports, reports of a limited rollout, and a later corrective update point to a genuine software-related incident for some owners—but not a universal defect.
Why failed wrist detection mattered
Wrist detection is more than a convenience feature. When the watch cannot tell that it is being worn, it may repeatedly lock if a PIN is enabled. Functions that depend on skin contact and the rear sensor assembly, including ECG and body-composition/BIA measurements, may also become unavailable.

Until the sensors work normally, do not rely on the watch for ECG, body composition, heart-rate, sleep, or exercise data. A watch that works only when placed on the palm side of the wrist is not necessarily fixed; inconsistent contact detection remains a fault.
Did Samsung confirm the cause?
The accessible evidence does not establish a detailed public Samsung root-cause bulletin or broad press statement. An indexed Samsung Community report said the issue could occur when sensor- and Always-On Display-related internal values were not properly reflected in the One UI 8 Watch software. Because the original forum page was not accessible, that explanation should be treated as an indexed community report, not as a fully documented public technical announcement.
Samsung subsequently released a Galaxy Watch 4 update reported on January 29, 2026. It included the January 2026 security patch and a changelog focused on “stability and reliability.” Many user reports said sensors and other One UI 8 problems improved or returned after installation, although some owners still reported Always-On Display issues. How to check for the corrective update
From the Galaxy Wearable app
- Open Galaxy Wearable on the connected phone.
- Tap Watch settings.
- Tap Watch software update.
- Tap Download and install.
Directly on the watch
- Open Settings.
- Tap Software update.
- Let the watch connect to the internet and check for available software.
Labels can differ by region, phone, model, and software version. Record the watch’s One UI Watch version, Wear OS version, security patch level, exact model number, and whether it is Bluetooth or LTE. Also note whether the fault began immediately after the December 2025 One UI 8 Watch update or developed gradually.

As of 2026, there is no single globally verified Galaxy Watch 4 firmware build that applies identically to every region. Research also identified a later May 2026 security-patch reference, but that does not replace checking the software actually offered to your watch.
What to do if your watch is malfunctioning
- Charge it adequately. Use the correct charger and check whether it becomes unusually hot.
- Restart the watch once. A restart can eliminate a temporary runaway process, but it is not a confirmed cure.
- Clean and refit it. Wipe the rear sensor, wear the watch snugly, and make sure the sensor fully contacts the skin.
- Install every pending update. Do this before attempting a factory reset.
- Test the basics. Check wrist detection, PIN behavior, heart-rate measurement, ECG/BIA availability, AOD, watch faces, charging, and battery drain.
- Back up before resetting. A factory reset erases local settings and may require payment apps such as Google Wallet to be authenticated again.
- Reset only as a later step. Some users reported improvement after clearing cache or resetting, but the evidence is anecdotal and inconsistent. A reset is not guaranteed to repair a defective battery or sensor.
- Escalate to service. Contact Samsung if sensors remain unavailable after the corrective update and reset, if the watch overheats, or if it does not charge reliably.
Software problem or aging hardware?
The Galaxy Watch 4 launched in 2021, so battery aging is a credible alternative explanation. A software update can also change background activity or expose a marginal battery without physically damaging it. Use the timing and combination of symptoms as clues, not as proof.

Should you repair or replace the watch?
Keep troubleshooting
Continue with software troubleshooting when the watch is physically intact, the issue began immediately after One UI 8 Watch, a stability update is available, or battery and sensor behavior improves after updating and restarting.
Use Samsung service
Repair is the sensible next step when the watch overheats, stops charging reliably, has physical damage, or still cannot perform health functions after the corrective update and reset. Samsung’s U.S. repair portal says pricing depends on diagnosis, warranty status, and repair type; transparent out-of-warranty mobile-device pricing is not posted universally online.

Replacement makes more sense when the watch has both a badly degraded battery and persistent sensor failure, the repair quote approaches the price of a newer model, or you need dependable ECG, BIA, sleep, and fitness tracking.

Samsung’s U.S. Galaxy Watch store lists current models, financing, and changing trade-in promotions. Do not assume a broken Watch 4 will receive the advertised trade-in value: Samsung’s conditions generally require the device to power on, hold a charge, have a functioning display, and pass inspection.
Buying another used Watch 4 is not automatically a solution. Verify its exact software version, battery condition, sensor operation, and return policy; an older replacement unit can carry the same update history and age-related battery risk.
Do not confuse this incident with later reports
A July 2026 report discussed a Galaxy Watch 4 vertical white-line display complaint after a software update, but the specific update was not identified. That display issue should not be merged with the December 2025 battery-and-sensor incident without evidence. See Android Authority’s report.
Similarly, reports of Google Play Services battery drain on newer Galaxy Watch generations do not automatically apply to the Watch 4 or prove that the original One UI 8 Watch fault is continuing. These incidents need to be matched by model, build, timing, and symptoms.
