Yes, the Galaxy Buds3 look much more like AirPods than Samsung’s older stemless earbuds did. Samsung replaced the rounded Buds shape with an open-fit earbud and a downward “blade” stem for handling and controls. That resemblance is obvious, but the more useful question is whether Samsung adopted a genuinely better design—not whether it copied Apple’s silhouette.
For many Galaxy owners, the answer is yes. The stem is easier to grasp and pinch, while the open fit avoids the pressure of silicone tips and preserves awareness of your surroundings. But Buds3 are not a universal AirPods replacement: their fit is less secure than sealed in-ear earbuds, their open design limits noise isolation, and iPhone users lose much of the software advantage that makes AirPods appealing.

Samsung changed the Buds formula
Earlier standard Galaxy Buds models generally used a rounded, stemless design that sat entirely inside the outer ear. The standard Galaxy Buds3 take a different approach: they use an open-type earbud with a short stem—or “blade”—extending downward from the housing.

That makes the “basically AirPods” description defensible as an observation about design language. It is not accurate to say Samsung reproduced every part of Apple’s product.

A stem is a widely used design solution, not an Apple-owned technology. Its value is practical: it gives the user a predictable place to hold and control the earbud.
Why the AirPods-style stem can be better
It is easier to handle
A stem gives you something to grasp when inserting or removing the earbud. That sounds minor, but it can reduce the need to press on the speaker housing or touch the part sitting against your ear. It may also make the earbuds easier to manage for people with limited dexterity or anyone who frequently removes one bud to talk.
Controls move away from the ear
Samsung’s pinch and swipe controls sit on the blade rather than requiring you to tap the main housing. In principle, pinching the stem is less likely to push an open-fit earbud deeper into the ear than tapping its outer shell. The controls are also familiar to anyone who has used stem-style earbuds before.

That does not mean every gesture is perfect for every user. Hair, glasses, fingers, and the angle of the bud can affect how easy the controls are to activate. Still, the interaction is more deliberate than repeatedly tapping a small housing in your ear. Samsung documents the Buds3 control system in its support specifications.
The microphones can sit closer to your mouth
A downward stem can place microphones nearer to the mouth than a completely stemless design. That is a sensible hardware advantage for calls, although microphone processing, wind handling, and background-noise reduction still determine the actual result. A stem alone does not guarantee better call quality.
Open fit is the real reason to buy—or avoid—the Buds3
The Buds3 are not merely AirPods-shaped. They also follow the open-fit philosophy associated with standard AirPods. They rest at the entrance of the ear rather than using silicone tips to seal the ear canal.
That can be appealing if silicone in-ear tips create pressure, warmth, or an occluded sensation. Open earbuds can also make it easier to hear traffic, coworkers, announcements, and nearby conversations. For office listening, walking, and long sessions, that awareness may be more useful than maximum isolation.

Optimized Features: The Galaxy Buds 3 Pro are optimized for Android, particularly Samsung Galaxy devices, for advanced features such as 360 Audio, UHQ audio codecs, and real-time AI-based functionalities. While they are compatible with iOS devices via Bluetooth, certain features are exclusive to Galaxy Android devices.
But comfortable does not mean secure, and awareness of your surroundings does not mean effective noise cancellation. An open earbud may loosen during movement, sound thin if it does not sit at the right angle, or produce less bass because there is no seal. Ear shape matters enormously. What feels stable to one person may feel precarious to another.
If the Buds3 sound bass-light, try repositioning them before reaching for an equalizer. Equalization cannot fully solve a physical fit problem. If the buds still move or sound weak, a sealed model is probably the better answer.
Yes, Buds3 have ANC—but do not expect sealed-earbud performance
Samsung lists Active Noise Canceling among the Buds3 features. ANC can reduce some low-frequency environmental noise even in an open design, but it cannot replace the passive isolation created by a tight silicone seal.
That distinction matters on airplanes, trains, subways, loud gyms, and busy commutes. Buds3 may soften some background rumble, but they should not be expected to perform like the sealed Galaxy Buds3 Pro, AirPods Pro, or another in-ear ANC model.
Open-fit ANC performance also varies more with ear shape and placement. The presence of an ANC toggle is not evidence that Buds3 belong in the same noise-isolation class as sealed earbuds.
Galaxy Buds3 versus Galaxy Buds3 Pro
The names are similar, but these are different types of earbuds. The “basically AirPods” comparison applies most directly to the standard Buds3.
| Feature | Galaxy Buds3 | Galaxy Buds3 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | Open type | Canal/in-ear type with silicone tips |
| Speaker | One-way speaker | Two-way woofer/tweeter system |
| Noise control | Active Noise Canceling | Adaptive ANC and Adaptive Noise Control |
| Water resistance | IP57 for the earbuds | IP57 for the earbuds |
| Best suited to | Awareness, easy handling, and tip-free comfort | Isolation, stronger bass potential, and premium listening |
Choose Buds3 Pro if you like Samsung’s blade styling but need a more secure seal for commuting or travel. Choose standard Buds3 if the open fit is the point—not a compromise you hope ANC will overcome.

Buds3 versus AirPods: the important differences
Design and controls
Buds3 and open-fit AirPods share the same recognizable combination of a speaker housing and a downward stem. Samsung adds its own blade styling and gesture system, but the visual convergence is hard to miss.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Both approaches can improve handling compared with stemless earbuds. The better control system depends partly on which gestures you find easiest and which settings your phone lets you customize.
Sound and isolation
Neither open-fit design creates the seal of an in-ear earbud. Sound, bass response, stability, and perceived loudness depend heavily on how each model fits your ears. Independent comparisons such as SoundGuys’ Buds3 and AirPods testing and RTINGS’ measured comparison are more useful than declaring one universally better from specifications alone.
The practical rule is simple: compare Buds3 with open-fit AirPods, not with AirPods Pro. Compare Buds3 Pro with AirPods Pro, because those products use sealed in-ear designs and target a different problem.
Ecosystem integration
This is where the comparison stops being mostly cosmetic. AirPods make the most sense with an iPhone, iPad, or Mac because of Apple’s system-level controls, automatic switching, Find My support, and Siri integration.
Buds3 make the strongest case with a Samsung Galaxy phone. Samsung’s Galaxy Wearable software, device-specific settings, Galaxy-device connectivity, and some Galaxy AI-related features are designed around compatible Galaxy and Android hardware. Availability can depend on the exact phone, One UI version, account, software release, and region.
On an iPhone, Buds3 can connect over Bluetooth for audio and calls. However, Samsung’s current compatibility guidance describes iOS support as Bluetooth-only for Buds3 rather than a full Galaxy Wearable experience. Pairing is therefore not the same as feature parity. See Samsung’s iOS compatibility guidance before buying.

Should you buy Galaxy Buds3 in 2026?
Buds3 launched in July 2024 and are no longer Samsung’s newest mainstream earbuds. Samsung’s corporate reporting identifies the Galaxy Buds4 and Buds4 Pro as March 2026 products. That changes the buying question: Buds3 now make the most sense as a discounted older model, not as the default current Galaxy recommendation.
Buy Buds3 if:
- You use a Samsung Galaxy phone.
- You specifically want an open fit without silicone tips.
- You like the stem format for handling and controls.
- You want to remain aware of nearby sounds.
- You find sealed earbuds uncomfortable.
- The Buds3 are meaningfully cheaper than the newer Buds4.
- You do not need the strongest possible ANC or isolation.
Choose something else if:
- You use an iPhone and want AirPods-level system integration.
- You travel by plane or public transit and need strong isolation.
- Open earbuds regularly fall out of your ears.
- You want Samsung’s newest audio hardware and features.
- You expect every Samsung AI feature to work on a non-Galaxy Android phone or iPhone.
- You need a waterproof charging case or swim-safe earbuds.
The standard Galaxy Buds4 are the direct current-generation comparison for someone who likes the Buds3 concept. Samsung US product pages displayed a $179.99 price during 2026 research, but promotions and availability change, so treat that as a time-sensitive signal rather than a permanent price. If the price gap is small, the newer model deserves serious consideration.
For isolation and a sealed fit, consider Buds3 Pro or Buds4 Pro instead. For iPhone owners, AirPods are usually the more coherent choice even if Buds3 can technically play audio from an iPhone. For non-Samsung Android owners, compare the required app and features before choosing either ecosystem’s earbuds.
The verdict
Galaxy Buds3 are “basically AirPods” in the best limited sense: Samsung adopted a familiar stem-and-open-earbud solution that can make earbuds easier to hold, control, and wear without silicone-tip pressure. That is a functional improvement for some users, not merely a visual imitation.

But the silhouette is not the whole product. Buds3 remain open-fit earbuds with weaker passive isolation, highly individual stability, and ANC that cannot match sealed in-ear models. Their biggest advantage appears when paired with a Galaxy phone; on iPhone, they become competent Bluetooth earbuds without the deeper integration that makes AirPods compelling.
So yes, the redesign was directionally right. Buy Buds3 when the open fit suits your ears and the price is clearly below newer Buds4. Otherwise, compare Buds4 for the current standard model, Buds3 Pro or Buds4 Pro for isolation, and AirPods for Apple-device integration.
