Mentra Live is a real, display-free smart-glasses product—but it is not universally better than Ray-Ban Meta. Its strongest advantages are landscape video, broader livestreaming ambitions, an open MentraOS developer platform, and a claimed 12-plus-hour mixed-use battery life. Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 remains the safer mainstream choice for higher-resolution video, prescription lenses, Meta AI, retail availability, and a more established consumer ecosystem.
Mentra Live launched at $299 in January 2026, but its current official product page lists the glasses at $349. Mentra says current US orders ship in one to three days.

What is Mentra Live?
Mentra Live is a pair of camera-and-audio glasses with no in-lens display. It uses a camera, stereo speakers, three microphones, physical buttons, and a touch swipe bar, while the companion Mentra app supplies the phone connection and much of the software experience.
That means “smart glasses” here does not mean augmented-reality overlays or navigation graphics floating in front of your eyes. Mentra Live is designed for hands-free photography, video, calls, music, AI interactions, captions, translation, note-taking, livestreaming, and custom applications.

The battery figures are not a controlled head-to-head test: Mentra uses “mixed use,” while Ray-Ban uses “moderate use.” Likewise, a higher camera resolution does not automatically make Ray-Ban’s portrait-first workflow better for every creator.

Mentra Live records in landscape, which is a natural fit for YouTube, conventional video players, desktop viewing, and many livestream layouts. Ray-Ban Meta’s default portrait orientation is often more convenient for TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts.
Neither orientation is universally superior. The important distinction is whether you mean still photos, recorded video, or live video: resolution, cropping, and supported formats can differ between those uses. Mentra’s published specifications establish landscape 1080p video and 3264 × 2448 stills; they do not establish superior image quality, stabilization, or low-light performance.

Livestreaming is the practical reason to consider Mentra
Mentra’s Stream feature is intended to send first-person video from the glasses to multiple destinations. Launch coverage identified YouTube and mentioned Twitch, X, Instagram, and OnlyFans, while Mentra markets support for “any social media platform.”
That is a meaningful difference in direction from a product designed primarily around one company’s social and AI ecosystem. It may appeal to YouTube creators, field teams, event coverage, and users who want a wider choice of destinations.

- A compatible phone running the Mentra app
- Internet access with enough upload capacity
- Platform authentication and any required account permissions
- Camera, microphone, Bluetooth, and network permissions
- Enough battery for the glasses and phone
The supplied information does not establish whether every destination uses direct account login, RTMP credentials, an app-mediated relay, or another method. Platform APIs, country restrictions, account status, and software updates can also change availability. Mentra’s broad support claim should therefore be treated as a feature promise that requires checking for the specific service you use.
What the Mentra app store really changes
Mentra’s MiniApp Store is more than a label for built-in settings. Through its SDK, developers can create applications that use the glasses’ camera, microphones, speakers, controls, and phone connection. Mentra says apps can be deployed to individual devices or distributed through the MiniApp Store, and that apps may work offline without depending on Mentra-hosted cloud infrastructure.

Launch examples included AI Notes and Poker Probability. For an ordinary buyer, that could eventually mean more specialized tools than a fixed set of first-party features. For developers and businesses, the more important proposition is the ability to build custom AI, inspection, accessibility, remote-assistance, or workflow software.
There are three separate ideas here:
- Open SDK: developer access to platform capabilities.
- MiniApp Store: a distribution layer for user-facing applications.
- Open-source MentraOS: a broader platform claim that does not automatically mean every app, cloud service, or hardware component is open source.
Openness also does not guarantee app quality, privacy, maintenance, or long-term compatibility. The store’s usefulness will depend on whether developers continue supporting their applications and whether users find enough reliable software to justify the platform.

Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 has the more impressive published camera specification: a 12MP ultrawide camera capable of up to 3K video at 30fps, along with a five-microphone array, two open-ear speakers, and 32GB of storage. Its official information lists up to 100 30-second videos or more than 500 photos.
Mentra Live counters with landscape capture, a 119-degree field of view, stereo speakers, three microphones, and the flexibility of its software platform. The available evidence does not support claims that Mentra has better sound, microphones, stabilization, comfort, or real-world image quality. The defensible distinction is workflow flexibility rather than outright camera superiority.

Phone requirements and availability
Both products are phone-dependent despite their hands-free appearance. Mentra lists compatibility with iOS 15.1 or later and Android 12 or later, plus the Mentra app, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.
Ray-Ban’s official FAQ lists iOS 14.4 or later and Android 10 or later, along with the Meta AI app, a Meta account, wireless internet, and software updates. AI features and voice commands can vary by country and language.
As checked on August 18, 2026, Mentra’s product page lists a $349 price, one-to-three-day shipping, and US-only shipping. The listed package includes the glasses, charging case, Infinity Cable, and microfiber cloth. Mentra also advertises a 30-day no-questions-asked return policy, subject to its stated conditions and return-shipping limitations for non-defective products.

Privacy and social acceptability
Mentra Live includes a camera privacy LED. That helps signal recording, but it does not eliminate the broader social and legal issues associated with camera glasses. Bystanders may not notice the indicator, and workplace or public-space rules can impose additional restrictions.
Mentra has stated that MentraOS stores users’ email addresses and installed-app information and that users can view and delete their data in the Mentra app. That statement should not be expanded into a promise that third-party MiniApps, AI providers, livestreaming services, or other external systems process no additional information. Before an enterprise deployment, administrators should review app permissions, data routing, retention, consent, and applicable privacy law.
Open software is not synonymous with private software, decentralized software, or anonymous use.
Who should buy Mentra Live?
- Livestreamers and video creators: especially those who want landscape first-person video or destinations beyond Meta’s ecosystem.
- Developers: the SDK and MiniApp Store make Mentra more interesting than a closed, fixed-function accessory.
- Enterprise and field teams: custom inspection, remote-support, documentation, and hands-free workflows are a more compelling reason to choose Mentra than generic AI features.

Mentra Live is the more open and flexible option, particularly for developers, livestreamers, enterprise workflows, and creators who specifically want landscape video. Its current $349 price also undercuts many Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 configurations.
Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is the more polished mainstream eyewear choice, with higher published camera specifications, more microphones, prescription and sunglass options, Meta AI integration, and broader availability.
So Mentra’s “best” claim only works for a specific buyer: someone who values openness and livestreaming flexibility over camera resolution, lens choice, and ecosystem maturity. For everyone else, Ray-Ban Meta remains the safer default.
