The Wear OS 4 release used build TWD9.240605.001.A1 and included wrist-detection improvements, better bicycle fall detection, security fixes, and Car Crash Detection for Pixel Watch 2.
This was a historical rollout, not a current 2026 update. If you are checking an older watch or verifying its software history, the guide below explains what changed and how the update was installed.

At a glance
- Rollout began: June 11, 2024
- Eligible models: Original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 running Wear OS 4
- Global build: TWD9.240605.001.A1
- Included: Tattoo-related wrist-detection improvements, bicycle fall-detection improvements, Pixel Watch 2 Car Crash Detection, bug fixes, performance updates, and June 2024 security fixes
- Not included: Wear OS 5; that major upgrade arrived later in 2024
Google distributed the update in stages over approximately a week, with timing varying by device and carrier. Not seeing a notification on June 11 or June 12 did not automatically indicate a problem. Google’s release announcement identified the same build for both supported generations and their Wi-Fi and LTE variants under the global listing.

Better wrist detection for some tattoos
Google said the release improved on-body and off-body detection for users with tattoos on their wrists. In practical terms, this was intended to make the watch more reliable at determining whether it was being worn in situations where tattoo ink interfered with detection.
#1 Best Overall
- The new Google Pixel Watch 5 offers a smarter way to a healthier you.[1,2]; Designed for Gemini Intelligence, get proactive help, and personalized insights from Google Health[3,4]; watch is compatible with Android devices only; not compatible with iOS devices
- Precision-crafted to do it all: The Google Pixel Watch 5 features the domed Actua 360 display with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and up to 40 hours of battery life[1,5]
- Metrics that matter: Advanced sensors help you stay ahead of your health and wellness; and Google Pixel’s most accurate heart rate tracking is fine-tuned for your activity[6,7]
- Understand your sleep like never before: Your watch captures insights like the time spent in sleep stages to breathing regularity, then summarizes it all in a personalized Sleep Score[8,9]
- Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]
It was not a new health sensor or a guarantee that every tattoo-related tracking, locking, or wearing-detection problem would disappear.
Car Crash Detection on Pixel Watch 2
The update added or enabled Car Crash Detection on Pixel Watch 2. The feature also required an updated Personal Safety app delivered through Google Play.
Google describes the feature as being able to detect a severe car crash and call emergency services if the wearer does not respond. It is a safety aid, not a guarantee that every collision will be detected or that an emergency call will always connect. Availability can depend on country, language, connectivity, and device configuration. Battery Saver and airplane mode can prevent it from working, and high-impact activities may potentially trigger detection. Google also warns that some crashes may not be detected and that emergency calling can fail under some network conditions. See the Google safety documentation for current availability and limitations; that page covers later Pixel Watch generations as well.

Improved bicycle fall detection
Google updated the fall-detection algorithm to better detect falls from bicycles. This was an improvement to an existing capability, not a wholly new fall-detection feature, and Google did not publish an accuracy percentage for the change.
Security, bug fixes, and performance
The release included numerous bug fixes, performance updates, and the June 2024 security fixes. Google’s June 2024 Pixel Watch security bulletin was published on June 11, 2024.
How to install the update
When the OTA was available, the watch displayed a notification. You could also check manually:

- Swipe down from the watch face.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap System.
- Tap System updates.
- Allow the watch to check for software.
- If an update appears, follow the on-screen instructions.
The watch restarts when installation finishes. Google recommends placing it on its charger, charging it to at least 50%, and connecting it to Wi-Fi. Installation could take up to an hour, during which time the watch was not available for normal use. These requirements and steps are listed in Google’s Pixel Watch update instructions.

How to verify the build
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap System.
- Tap About.
- Tap Versions.
- Check the Build number and Android security-update level.
The June 2024 build was TWD9.240605.001.A1. It was a Wear OS 4 build for the original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2, not the current software build in 2026.
Update the apps separately
The system OTA was not the only update involved. Car Crash Detection required the Personal Safety app update, and other watch functionality could depend on separate Play Store releases.
Rank #4
- Google Pixel Watch has a beautiful circular, domed design and new experience with Wear OS by Google, so it’s easy to get help at a glance
- Stay on top of activity, calories burned, and more with Fitbit activity tracking
- Track your heart rate and get insight into your sleep

Update watch apps
- Press the watch crown.
- Open the Play Store.
- Tap Manage apps.
- Tap Update all, or install the listed Personal Safety update.
Update the Pixel Watch phone app
- Open Google Play Store on the paired Android phone.
- Tap the profile icon.
- Tap Manage apps & device.
- Tap Updates available.
- Update Google Pixel Watch if it appears.
If the update did not appear
A delayed notification during the original rollout was usually consistent with Google’s staged distribution. Try this sequence:
- Put the watch on its charger and ensure it has at least 50% battery.
- Connect it to Wi-Fi.
- Update the phone’s Google Pixel Watch app and the watch’s Play Store apps.
- Check Settings → System → System updates again later.
- Allow roughly a week for the phased rollout window before treating the delay as unusual.
If the watch appeared stuck checking for updates, Google’s troubleshooting steps were:
- Press and hold the crown and side button for about 20 seconds, then wait for the watch to reboot fully.
- Open Settings → Connectivity → Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth off.
- Open Settings → Connectivity → Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi on.
- Return to Settings → System → System updates.
Do not use manual flashing as the first response. Google’s full OTA image page is intended for technically advanced users working with personal devices and carries more risk than waiting for the built-in OTA.
Best Value
- The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 45mm screen is twice as bright and 40% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
- Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]
- Enhance your run routine with Fitbit Premium; Google AI uses your goals, past runs, and readiness to power personalized run recommendations[3]
- Know what your body is ready for each day with readiness; it uses sleep, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability to show if you’re ready to take on a workout or prioritize recovery[3]
- Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]
Battery drain and reboot reports
Some owners reported battery drain or reboots in Google Pixel Watch Community discussions after the release. Those reports were anecdotal: Google’s June release notes did not confirm a widespread battery-drain defect caused by the update.
If battery life changed sharply after installation, update all watch apps, reboot the watch, and monitor it for a day or two. If the watch continues rebooting or battery life remains abnormal, contact Google support rather than assuming the community reports establish a confirmed software bug.
Do not confuse it with Wear OS 5
The June 2024 release remained based on Wear OS 4. Wear OS 5 began rolling out to the original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 later, with the September 2024 update. That later upgrade should not be described as part of the June release. 9to5Google’s September 2024 coverage documents the later Wear OS 5 rollout.
The practical takeaway
The June 2024 Pixel Watch update was a genuine standalone release for supported first-generation Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 devices running Wear OS 4. The correct build was TWD9.240605.001.A1. Install the system OTA when offered, update Personal Safety and other watch apps separately, and verify the build under Settings → System → About → Versions. A missing notification during the original staged rollout was not, by itself, evidence of a malfunction.
