There is no officially announced Samsung product called the “Galaxy Watch 9 Ultra,” and Samsung has not confirmed that its 2026 watches use solid-state batteries. Samsung launched the Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2 on July 22, 2026. Separately, Samsung Electro-Mechanics has developed an oxide-based all-solid-state battery prototype for wearables—but its announcement does not identify either watch as a customer for that technology.
The naming problem: Galaxy Watch9 versus Galaxy Watch Ultra2
“Galaxy Watch 9 Ultra” appears to be an unofficial mash-up of two separate products. Samsung’s current lineup distinguishes between the mainstream Galaxy Watch9 and the rugged Galaxy Watch Ultra2.

What Samsung actually launched
Galaxy Watch9
The Galaxy Watch9 comes in 40mm and 44mm versions and uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear Elite platform. Samsung lists a 390mAh battery and says capacity is 20% higher than the previous generation.
Its focus is everyday health and fitness rather than expedition hardware. Samsung highlights features including Sleep Apnea, Vitals, Heart Health Score, Daily Cardio Load, Fitness Index, exercise tracking, sleep monitoring, and hearing-related health functions. Availability and regulatory status for health features can vary by country, phone, operating system, and software version.
Galaxy Watch Ultra2
The Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is a 47mm premium outdoor model with an 800mAh battery. Samsung says it can reach up to 40% charge in approximately 30 minutes and has 35% more capacity than the preceding Galaxy Watch Ultra.

Samsung also says the Ultra2 is 12% thinner than its predecessor despite the larger battery, attributing the redesign to expanded battery capacity, component optimization, and internal changes. None of those facts identifies the battery’s electrolyte chemistry.

What a solid-state battery actually means
Conventional lithium-ion batteries generally use a liquid electrolyte to move ions between the electrodes. An all-solid-state battery replaces that liquid electrolyte with a solid material.
That approach could be valuable in a smartwatch, where every millimeter matters. Potential benefits include:
- Less risk of leakage and improved resistance to some combustion scenarios
- More freedom in designing very small or unusually shaped cells
- Potentially higher volumetric energy density
- Better ways to address the space limitations of compact wearables
But “solid-state” is not a synonym for “three-day battery life.” It does not automatically guarantee faster charging, lower cost, longer service life, perfect cold-weather performance, or the removal of all thermal and manufacturing risks.

It is also important to distinguish between technologies. An all-solid-state cell uses a solid electrolyte throughout. A semi-solid or hybrid design may retain liquid or gel components. Silicon-carbon and other high-density lithium-ion batteries are different technologies, even if they can also improve capacity.

The real Samsung solid-state battery announcement
On September 27, 2024, Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced an ultra-compact, oxide-based all-solid-state battery for wearables.
The company reported an energy density of 200Wh/L, described a design using layered printed electrodes and solid electrolyte materials, and said the battery was being offered to customers for prototype evaluations. Samsung Electro-Mechanics also said it had filed more than 40 international patents related to oxide-based all-solid-state batteries over the preceding three years.
That is genuine Samsung solid-state battery research. It is not, however, a product announcement for the Galaxy Watch9 or Galaxy Watch Ultra2. The announcement did not provide:
- A Galaxy Watch model name
- A commercial launch date
- Production volumes
- A statement that the cell was shipping inside a retail watch
Prototype evaluation is not commercial deployment. A battery can work in a demonstration and still require further validation for production yield, certification, cost, charging behavior, cycle life, mechanical integration, and supplier capacity.

Where the Galaxy Watch solid-state rumor came from
The rumor sounded plausible because Samsung had already announced a wearable-focused solid-state prototype. Later reporting connected that technology with possible future Galaxy wearables, including speculation about a 2026 Galaxy Watch generation. That coverage was speculative, not confirmation from Samsung that a particular watch would use the cell.
Once the Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2 launched, the evidence became more specific: Samsung’s official product materials disclosed battery capacities and performance claims, but did not mention solid-state chemistry.
A forecast or leaked roadmap should not be upgraded into a confirmed specification after launch unless Samsung, a supplier, a regulatory document, or reliable physical evidence supports it.

Does the Ultra2’s 800mAh battery prove it is solid-state?
No. The Ultra2’s 800mAh capacity is substantial, but capacity alone cannot reveal whether a cell is all-solid-state, semi-solid, conventional lithium-ion, or another chemistry.

A larger battery can result from more internal volume, thinner components, improved packaging, higher-density conventional chemistry, or a complete internal redesign. Fast charging and a slimmer case are similarly not proof of a solid-state cell.
There is also no direct conversion between the prototype’s reported 200Wh/L and the watch’s 800mAh figure without knowing the cell voltage, dimensions, and complete battery design. Wh/L measures energy per unit volume; mAh measures electrical charge capacity.
Battery capacity is not the same as battery life
The confirmed capacity figures are useful, but they do not predict identical real-world endurance across watches. Runtime depends on:
- Always-on display settings and brightness
- Bluetooth versus LTE use
- GPS recording and workout frequency
- Sleep tracking and health-sensor activity
- Screen wake behavior and notifications
- Ambient temperature
- Software version and power-saving settings
Samsung’s “up to” figures are usage estimates under particular conditions, not guarantees for every owner. The 800mAh Ultra2 should appeal to buyers who prioritize capacity, but it is not evidence of a new battery chemistry and should not be advertised as guaranteed multi-day endurance without independent testing or a precise Samsung usage condition.

Buy the Galaxy Watch9 if:
- You want a more conventional 40mm or 44mm Samsung smartwatch.
- Your priorities are sleep, wellness, exercise, and Samsung Health integration.
- You do not need the Ultra2’s rugged outdoor or diving-oriented hardware.
Buy the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 if:
- You want Samsung’s largest currently disclosed watch battery.
- You prefer a 47mm outdoor design.
- You value rugged protection, diving certification, high display brightness, and faster charging.
- You accept a larger and more specialized watch.
Wait if:
- A confirmed all-solid-state battery is specifically important to you.
- You are willing to wait for a product-specific Samsung announcement, supplier confirmation, teardown, or regulatory evidence.
- You understand that the existing prototype has no confirmed retail release schedule.
For live regional models, LTE variants, promotions, and compatibility requirements, use Samsung’s official wearables storefront. Prices and availability vary by country and edition.
How to verify a future solid-state Galaxy Watch claim
- Look for explicit chemistry wording in Samsung’s official technical specifications.
- Check regulatory filings or certification documents for the battery type.
- Look for a teardown identifying the cell and its supplier.
- Check whether Samsung or the battery supplier publishes a traceable cell model number.
- Look for service documentation identifying the replacement battery technology.
- Separate a supplier prototype announcement from evidence that the battery is inside a shipping product.
Until that evidence appears, accurate wording is: “Samsung has developed a wearable solid-state battery prototype” or “the technology could appear in future wearables.” It is not accurate to state that the Galaxy Watch9 or Galaxy Watch Ultra2 uses a solid-state battery.
