But the images did not prove that Samsung copied Apple’s connector dimensions—or that Apple Watch bands would fit. Samsung’s finished watch uses its own proprietary Dynamic Lug System, and its bands are not interchangeable with Apple Watch bands, Galaxy Watch7 bands, or standard bands from older Galaxy Watch models.
What the Galaxy Watch Ultra leak actually showed
Images published by 9to5Google on June 27, 2024, and attributed to leaker Evan Blass, appeared ahead of Samsung’s July 10 Unpacked event. They showed a squarish, rugged-looking Galaxy Watch with orange accents and an orange strap.

The most notable detail was the band attachment. A release button was visible on the underside of the case, making the connector appear integrated into the watch body rather than using the exposed spring bars common on many earlier Galaxy Watch models. That resemblance prompted comparisons with Apple Watch, particularly the Apple Watch Ultra.

However, a leaked exterior image cannot establish identical dimensions, locking geometry, patents, or compatibility. It showed that the designs looked alike—not that Samsung had adopted Apple’s band standard.

Why it looked like Apple Watch
Apple Watch bands use a proprietary sliding connector with release controls built into the case. Apple’s band-removal and compatibility guidance documents how bands fit across certain Apple Watch case sizes, including compatibility involving some 44mm and 45mm models and the Ultra family.
The leaked Galaxy Watch Ultra created a similar visual impression because its band appeared to lock into the case through a built-in mechanism. The orange strap also recalled the orange-heavy presentation of Apple Watch Ultra accessories. Those similarities support describing the leak as Apple Watch-like or visually reminiscent of Apple’s design. They do not establish that Samsung copied Apple’s exact engineering or intentionally infringed Apple’s design rights.
Samsung’s final product used a different system
Samsung announced the Galaxy Watch Ultra on July 10, 2024, with general availability beginning July 24 in applicable markets. The original model had a 47mm case and used what Samsung calls the Dynamic Lug System.
Samsung’s official support documentation says the Ultra’s bands are designed specifically for the Galaxy Watch Ultra and are not interchangeable with other Galaxy Watch models. Samsung’s design explanation presents the system as a way to fasten the band inside the watch body, improve the fit against the wrist, and make band changes easier.

That gives the final product a clear identity of its own: it may use a similar case-integrated design language, but Samsung did not simply switch to Apple’s band system.
Do Apple Watch bands fit the Galaxy Watch Ultra?
No—not officially. Samsung does not list Apple Watch bands as compatible with the Galaxy Watch Ultra, and the leak never proved that the two systems shared measurements or locking hardware.
An Apple band could only be considered through an unofficial adapter, custom hardware, or modification. Those solutions may leave the connector sitting unevenly, introduce movement or excess tension, scratch the case, or release during exercise. Samsung’s durability and water-resistance claims apply to the watch as designed; they do not certify a third-party adapter or modified band arrangement.

That matters especially for swimming, water sports, running, climbing, and other activities where a released watch could be damaged or lost. Samsung does not guarantee the fit, retention, water performance, or warranty treatment of an Apple-band workaround.

- Rugged Outdoor Design: Built for durability with a strong case suited for extreme environments and outdoor adventures.
Do older Galaxy Watch bands fit?
Also no, if you mean direct installation on the Ultra. Galaxy Watch Ultra bands use the Dynamic Lug System, while many other Galaxy Watch models use conventional 20mm or 22mm spring-bar bands or Samsung’s standard one-click arrangement.
| Watch | Band system | Compatibility |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch Ultra (2024) | Dynamic Lug System | Dedicated Ultra bands only, according to Samsung |
| Galaxy Watch7 | Standard one-click system | Not interchangeable with Ultra bands |
| Many Galaxy Watch4–Watch7 models | 20mm bands | Several models share compatibility |
| Some older 45mm or 46mm Galaxy Watch models | 22mm spring-bar bands | Compatibility depends on the exact model and width |
Samsung’s band-change guidance and regional compatibility information distinguish the Ultra from the broader 20mm and 22mm Galaxy Watch ecosystem. A listing that says only “fits Galaxy Watch” is therefore not specific enough for an Ultra purchase.
What bands did Samsung make for the Ultra?
The original Galaxy Watch Ultra documentation identifies dedicated options including:
- Marine Band: designed to dry quickly and equipped with a titanium lock. Its marketing does not mean every water activity is automatically appropriate; follow Samsung’s operating and water-resistance guidance.
- Trail Band: a lightweight fabric-style band with a latch-and-hook buckle for outdoor use.
- PeakForm Band: a woven fabric and HNBR option aimed at workouts and outdoor activities.
Samsung’s listed sizing and color availability can vary by market. The original Ultra documentation specifically lists an M/L band, while Samsung’s general guidance lists S/M at 130–190mm and M/L at 145–205mm. Check the regional product listing rather than assuming that every color or size is sold everywhere.

Why might Samsung and Apple use similar connectors?
A case-integrated connector has practical design advantages. It can create a cleaner transition from the strap to the watch, reduce the appearance of exposed lugs, and let the manufacturer control the strap’s curvature and alignment.
Both companies also use “Ultra” branding and target buyers looking for rugged, premium outdoor watches. That makes some visual convergence plausible. It is an engineering interpretation, not evidence of Samsung’s intent. Samsung’s own explanation emphasizes fit, ease of changing bands, and outdoor-focused design—not copying Apple.

The band controversy concerned Samsung’s first Ultra model, launched in 2024. For context, its headline specifications included:

- 10ATM, IP68, and MIL-STD-810H claims
Samsung’s stated phone requirements included Android 11 or later and more than 1.5GB of memory, with additional market, carrier, Google Play Store, and device-brand limitations. It was not a watch that worked with every Android phone without qualification. These specifications also apply to the original 2024 model and should not be casually mixed with later Ultra-branded generations.

Buying advice: check the connector, not just the name
If you are moving from Apple Watch, do not buy a Galaxy Watch Ultra expecting to reuse your existing Apple bands. If you own a Galaxy Watch4, Watch5, Watch6, or Watch7, do not assume your 20mm bands will transfer either.
- Look for listings that explicitly name the Galaxy Watch Ultra and its Dynamic Lug connector.
- Do not rely on “universal smartwatch band” wording.
- Confirm the exact model generation when buying used, especially if the seller refers only to an “Ultra.”
- Prefer official Samsung bands when retention and water-use confidence matter most.
- Treat adapter-based solutions as experimental rather than as a primary setup for demanding activities.
Current prices and stock vary by country. Samsung’s live store and regional support pages are more reliable than old launch-era pricing or listings that combine Ultra and non-Ultra accessories.
The verdict
The headline is fair only if “copies Apple Watch bands” means that the leaked connector looked Apple-like. It is too strong if it implies proven copying, identical hardware, or drop-in band compatibility.
