Garmin Beat Apple to the World’s First MicroLED Smartwatch—But It Isn’t an Apple Watch Ultra 3 Killer

Garmin’s fēnix 8 Pro MicroLED is the first known commercial MicroLED smartwatch—but its $1,699.99 price and battery trade-offs make it a specialist Apple Watch Ultra 3 alternative.

Yes: Garmin beat Apple to a commercially launched MicroLED smartwatch. The fēnix 8 Pro MicroLED arrived in September 2025 with a claimed peak brightness of 4,500 nits. But its $1,699.99 US price, shorter battery life than Garmin’s AMOLED version, and required inReach subscription make it a specialist outdoor watch—not a universal replacement for the $799 Apple Watch Ultra 3.

Its real advantages are bright-sun readability, Garmin’s endurance and navigation tools, premium sapphire-and-titanium construction, and wrist-based LTE and satellite communication. For most Garmin buyers, the fēnix 8 Pro AMOLED is the more sensible choice; for iPhone owners who prioritize apps and ecosystem integration, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 remains the better fit.

Did Garmin really launch the first MicroLED smartwatch?

Garmin launched the fēnix 8 Pro MicroLED in September 2025, ahead of Apple Watch Ultra 3 availability on September 19, 2025. Garmin called it the “first-ever” smartwatch with a MicroLED display, while display supplier AUO described it as the “world’s first smartwatch equipped with Micro LED display technology.”

That claim is credible when it means the first known commercially launched smartwatch with a MicroLED screen. It should not be read as proof that Garmin produced the first wearable prototype or laboratory demonstration. “World’s first” is a claim made by Garmin and AUO, not an independently audited industry certification.

Garmin’s announcement and AUO’s announcement provide the relevant launch claims.

What MicroLED changes

MicroLED uses microscopic, individually controlled LEDs that produce their own light. Like OLED, it can switch individual pixels off for deep blacks and high contrast. Unlike OLED, MicroLED uses inorganic light-emitting material, which theoretically offers greater resistance to burn-in and longer operating life.

Garmin says the fēnix 8 Pro MicroLED display has:

  • Up to 4,500 nits of peak brightness
  • More than 400,000 individual LEDs
  • A color gamut approximately 15% wider
  • Up to six times greater contrast
  • Improved resistance to burn-in and greater durability
  • Wider viewing angles

Those are manufacturer specifications and claims, not independent laboratory measurements. A 4,500-nit peak does not necessarily mean the entire screen remains at that brightness continuously. Outdoor visibility also depends on ambient light, viewing angle, screen coatings, software, watch face, and display mode.

In practice, the technology matters most when you are reading maps, workout data, or navigation instructions in direct sunlight. Independent TechRadar testing praised the display and outdoor performance, but reviewer impressions should not be confused with a controlled brightness benchmark.

MicroLED does not automatically improve GPS accuracy, training algorithms, sensor accuracy, map quality, cellular coverage, software usability, or battery life. In fact, Garmin’s own figures show that the MicroLED version lasts substantially less time than the comparable AMOLED Pro.

What you get for $1,699.99

The US-listed 51mm fēnix 8 Pro MicroLED is a premium multisport computer as much as it is a display showcase. Garmin lists sapphire crystal and a titanium construction, along with a 10 ATM water rating.

Core features include:

  • Multi-band GPS, built-in maps, and turn-by-turn navigation
  • Training, recovery, performance, sleep, and health metrics
  • ECG functionality where supported
  • Pulse oximetry where available and permitted
  • An integrated LED flashlight
  • Garmin Pay and onboard music storage
  • Voice calls and messages through the connected Garmin ecosystem
  • LTE and satellite communication through Garmin inReach

The Pro platform’s inReach technology supports two-way messaging, interactive SOS alerts, LiveTrack, and related communication features. An active subscription is required for the relevant inReach services. Coverage and feature availability vary by country, network conditions, satellite visibility, and local regulations. Satellite messaging should not be treated as universally available or as a substitute for every type of dedicated emergency beacon.

Battery life: the MicroLED compromise

Garmin rates the fēnix 8 Pro MicroLED for up to 10 days in smartwatch mode, or up to four days with the always-on display enabled.

That is still dramatically longer than Apple’s quoted figures, but it is a major compromise inside Garmin’s own range. The fēnix 8 Pro AMOLED is rated for up to 27 days, or up to 15 days with its always-on display enabled.

These are manufacturer estimates made under different test conditions, so they are not perfectly equivalent across brands. They nevertheless show the central trade-off clearly: you are paying for a brighter, newer display while accepting lower endurance.

Garmin fēnix 8 Pro MicroLED vs Apple Watch Ultra 3

Category Garmin fēnix 8 Pro MicroLED Apple Watch Ultra 3
Display MicroLED; Garmin claims up to 4,500 nits LTPO3 wide-angle OLED with 1Hz always-on capability

Apple’s Ultra 3 uses OLED, not MicroLED. Its strengths are efficient display technology, angled visibility, a broad app platform, health features, calls, notifications, and tight iPhone integration. Apple’s official announcement lists up to 42 hours of normal battery life and up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode.

  • Navigate confidently with a 3-axis compass, barometric altimeter and multi-band GPS with SatIQ technology, which delivers superior positioning while also optimizing battery life

Garmin wins decisively on quoted battery endurance, long-duration training tools, expedition-oriented navigation, and the MicroLED display’s claimed outdoor advantages. Apple is stronger as a general-purpose smartwatch for iPhone owners. Neither is universally better: they are built around different priorities.

The price gap is also enormous. Garmin’s model costs more than twice the Apple Watch Ultra 3’s US starting price. Garmin’s titanium, sapphire, and inReach hardware make this an imperfect like-for-like comparison, but they do not make the price difference irrelevant.

For official specifications, compare Garmin’s fēnix models with Apple’s Apple Watch Ultra 3 announcement.

MicroLED versus Garmin’s AMOLED alternatives

fēnix 8 Pro AMOLED

The fēnix 8 Pro AMOLED is the most important alternative. Garmin lists it at $1,299.99, roughly $400 less than the MicroLED model. It retains the Pro platform’s broad feature set and inReach connectivity while offering up to 27 days of smartwatch battery life, or up to 15 days with always-on enabled.

  • Run your best with helpful training tools, including race time predictions and finish time estimates
  • Track all the ways you move with built-in activity profiles for running, cycling, track run, virtual run, pool swim, Pilates, HIIT, breathwork and more

Choose it if you want Garmin’s premium construction, training tools, maps, and off-grid communication but do not specifically need the newest display technology. For many serious athletes and outdoor users, this is the best-balanced option.

Standard fēnix 8 AMOLED

The standard fēnix 8 AMOLED comparison model starts at about $1,099.99 in the US. It provides Garmin’s core sports, health, mapping, and training features but does not offer the Pro model’s same combination of LTE and satellite inReach communication.

It is the better-value choice if you want long battery life and Garmin’s training ecosystem without paying for expedition connectivity you will not use.

Who should buy the fēnix 8 Pro MicroLED?

  • Expedition and remote-area users: The combination of maps, long battery life relative to Apple, premium materials, and inReach communication is genuinely useful—provided service coverage and subscription terms work for your destinations.
  • Serious endurance athletes: Garmin’s training and performance ecosystem is a better match than watchOS for users who prioritize structured training, recovery, navigation, and multi-day events.
  • Sunlight-first users: If you constantly read maps or data screens outdoors, the claimed brightness and contrast may justify the premium.
  • Garmin enthusiasts: This is the model for buyers who want the newest display technology and are willing to accept its battery penalty.

Who should choose something else?

  • Most Garmin buyers: The fēnix 8 Pro AMOLED saves about $400 and lasts far longer.
  • Users without inReach needs: The standard fēnix 8 AMOLED offers the core Garmin experience for less money.
  • iPhone owners focused on apps and everyday smartwatch features: The Apple Watch Ultra 3 offers deeper Apple integration at less than half the price.
  • Casual fitness users: Paying $1,699.99 for MicroLED, sapphire, titanium, and expedition connectivity is difficult to justify if you mainly track workouts, sleep, and notifications.
  • Buyers who dislike subscriptions: Garmin’s relevant LTE and satellite features require an active inReach plan.

Verdict

Garmin did beat Apple to a commercial MicroLED smartwatch, and the fēnix 8 Pro MicroLED is a technically significant product. Its screen should be particularly compelling for outdoor navigation and data-heavy use in bright sunlight.

But MicroLED is not enough to make it an automatic Apple Watch Ultra 3 killer. At $1,699.99, with only up to four days of always-on battery life and a separate inReach subscription for key communication features, it is a specialized purchase. Buy it if you specifically value its display and expedition-oriented Pro platform. Otherwise, the fēnix 8 Pro AMOLED is the smarter Garmin purchase, while the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the better choice for iPhone users who prioritize ecosystem integration.
