How the 47 mm models compare
This is a size-matched comparison of the epix Pro (Gen 2) Sapphire and the fēnix 7 Pro Sapphire Solar. Garmin lists different battery estimates for other sizes, so figures for the 42 mm or 51 mm versions should not be applied to these watches.

Choose by display preference
epix Pro: AMOLED
The epix Pro Sapphire has an AMOLED display. Choose it if that is the screen experience you prefer. Garmin’s published battery information distinguishes between ordinary smartwatch-mode use and use with the display always on, so the mode you expect to use matters when weighing battery life.

fēnix 7 Pro: transflective MIP
The fēnix 7 Pro Sapphire Solar uses a sunlight-visible transflective MIP display. Choose it if you prefer this display type, especially alongside the model’s solar-charging feature. The official information establishes the display difference, but does not establish that one screen is objectively better for every wearer.
Understand the battery estimates in context
Smartwatch mode
For the 47 mm epix Pro, Garmin specifies up to 16 days in smartwatch mode. Its owner manual separately gives up to 6 days with the display always on. These are distinct manufacturer estimates for different display-use conditions, not promises of typical runtime. Garmin’s epix (Gen 2) series owner manual provides the always-on figure.

For the 47 mm fēnix 7 Pro Sapphire Solar, Garmin lists up to 18 days in smartwatch mode, or up to 22 days with solar. The solar figure is a Garmin estimate, not a guarantee that ordinary outdoor use will deliver that runtime.
Why your runtime can differ
Garmin says battery life varies with settings and use, including wrist-based heart rate, smartphone notifications, GPS, internal sensors and connected sensors. Treat “up to” as a best-case manufacturer estimate rather than a direct prediction for your routine. Garmin’s fēnix 7 Series owner manual describes the factors that affect battery life.

Do not borrow figures from another size
Garmin’s 2023 fēnix 7 Pro launch announcement gives a figure of up to 37 days for the 7X Pro under a stated condition of three hours per day in direct sunlight at 50,000 lux. That is a different, larger model and a specific solar-light assumption; it is not the 47 mm fēnix 7 Pro estimate. The announcement is dated May 31, 2023: Garmin’s fēnix 7 Pro Series announcement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do shared features settle the choice?
Garmin lists built-in mapping, multi-band GPS, an LED flashlight, Garmin Pay, music storage, training readiness and training status for both models. If those are the capabilities you are comparing, the official comparison does not show them as a reason to choose one over the other. Focus instead on the screen and solar charging, then consider how the different battery estimates fit your use.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose the epix Pro (Gen 2) Sapphire, 47 mm if you want AMOLED and do not need solar charging.
- Choose the fēnix 7 Pro Sapphire Solar, 47 mm if you want a transflective MIP display and solar charging, or if its higher published smartwatch-mode estimates better match your priorities.
- Decide based on your likely settings rather than comparing maximum figures alone: always-on display use and the sensors, notifications and GPS features you enable can change battery life.
