Choose the fēnix 8 Solar if you prefer a sunlight-visible transflective display and spend enough time outdoors for solar charging to extend its potential runtime. Compare the same case size first: Solar is offered in 47 mm and 51 mm, while AMOLED also comes in 43 mm.
What is different between fēnix 8 AMOLED and Solar?
The display technology is the key distinction. Garmin specifies an AMOLED display for the AMOLED models and a sunlight-visible transflective memory-in-pixel (MIP) display for Solar models. The official specifications identify the technologies but do not provide an independent, measured comparison of brightness, readability, or image quality.

Solar also adds solar charging. That can increase the published battery estimate under Garmin’s stated sunlight conditions, but it is not a guaranteed runtime boost in everyday use.

Garmin’s figures below are maximum smartwatch-mode estimates, not typical-use guarantees. For AMOLED, the always-on figure is lower than the wrist-gesture figure. For Solar, the enhanced estimate assumes all-day wear and three hours per day outdoors in 50,000 lux.
#1 Best Overall
- Advanced multisport GPS smartwatch for athletes/adventurers features a 1.4” solar charged display with scratch-resistant sapphire lens, durable titanium bezel and built-in LED flashlight for after-dark visibility
- Battery performance: up to 48 days of battery life in smartwatch mode with solar charging (assumes all-day wear with 3 hours per day outside in 50,000 lux conditions) and up to 149 hours in GPS mode with solar charging (assumes continuous use for entire period in 50,000 lux conditions) — all with an always-on display, so you’re ready to take on the toughest challenges
- Power up your body’s performance, endurance and resistance to injury with targeted strength training plans, real-time stamina tracking, sport-specific workouts and a full range of built-in sports apps
- Your training readiness score is based on sleep quality, recovery, training load and HRV status to determine if you’re primed to go hard and reap the rewards (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- For your active lifestyle, a built-in speaker and mic let you make and take phone calls from your wrist when your watch is paired to your smartphone — and you can even use your smartphone’s voice assistant to respond to text messages and more
| Case size and variant | Smartwatch estimate | Conditions or display setting |
|---|---|---|
| 47 mm AMOLED | Up to 16 days | Wrist gesture; up to 7 days with always-on display |
| 47 mm Solar | Up to 21 days; up to 28 days with solar | The 28-day estimate assumes all-day wear and three hours per day outdoors in 50,000 lux |
| 51 mm AMOLED | Up to 29 days | Wrist gesture; up to 13 days with always-on display |
| 51 mm Solar | Up to 30 days; up to 48 days with solar | The 48-day estimate assumes all-day wear and three hours per day outdoors in 50,000 lux |
At 47 mm, Solar’s listed estimate is longer even without the solar extension. At 51 mm, the non-solar Solar estimate and AMOLED’s wrist-gesture estimate are close; the larger difference appears only when the Solar model can benefit from the specified exposure. Compare Garmin’s 51 mm AMOLED and 47 mm Solar specifications and 47 mm AMOLED and 51 mm Solar specifications, alongside the fēnix 8 Series owner’s manual.
Actual battery life varies with settings and use. Garmin names wrist-based heart rate, smartphone notifications, GPS, internal sensors, and connected sensors as factors that affect runtime. Frequent GPS use or other enabled features can therefore make your result differ from the maximum smartwatch estimate.

Which sizes can you buy?
| Variant | Available case sizes in Garmin’s cited lineup |
|---|---|
| AMOLED | 43 mm, 47 mm, and 51 mm |
| Solar | 47 mm and 51 mm |
If you want a 43 mm watch, there is no size-matched Solar alternative in this lineup. For 47 mm or 51 mm, compare the display and battery options at the same size rather than treating the larger case as a direct comparison.

Which fēnix 8 should you choose?
Choose AMOLED if the display experience comes first
- You specifically want an AMOLED screen.
- You are willing to charge more often, especially if you use always-on display.
- You are considering the 43 mm size, which is available in AMOLED but not Solar.
Choose Solar if outdoor runtime potential matters more
- You prefer a sunlight-visible transflective MIP screen.
- You regularly spend time outdoors, making Garmin’s solar-charging assumptions more relevant to your use.
- You want the longer published battery estimate and understand that the solar-enhanced figure depends on sunlight exposure.
There is no universal winner: the right choice depends on display preference, case size, charging tolerance, and how much outdoor exposure your routine provides.

What features do the variants share?
Garmin’s comparisons list built-in mapping, multi-band GPS, music storage, training readiness and status, an LED flashlight, Garmin Pay, and ECG app compatibility among the headline features for both variants. Garmin’s launch announcement also describes a built-in speaker and microphone, dive capabilities, and training and navigation functions. Availability can depend on model configuration, region, compatible smartphone, and software; consult the specifications for the exact model and region before relying on a particular feature. Garmin’s August 27, 2024 announcement describes the lineup, but its launch pricing is historical rather than a current price guide.
