For most runners and triathletes, the Garmin Forerunner 965 is the more practical pick: it offers built-in maps, multi-band GPS, music storage and Garmin’s training tools in a much lighter watch. Choose the fēnix 8 if its higher water rating, flashlight, ECG app, speaker and microphone, or broader size and material choices matter enough to you to accept more weight and a higher listed price. Neither is a stripped-down option for training or navigation.
What’s the real difference between the fēnix 8 and Forerunner 965?
Garmin positions the Forerunner 965 for running and triathlon, while the fēnix 8 is its multisport line. That distinction is about emphasis, not a divide between basic and advanced: Garmin lists built-in maps, multi-band GPS, music storage, training readiness and training status for both watches in its comparison. The choice is more about weight, outdoor-oriented hardware, and which configuration you want to wear.

Which watch is better for running and triathlon?
Choose the Forerunner 965 for a lighter training watch
At 53 g, the Forerunner 965 is markedly lighter than the compared 51 mm fēnix 8, which Garmin lists at 92 g in titanium or 102 g in stainless steel. That difference may count if you want a watch that feels less substantial through daily wear and long runs. The Forerunner still has the maps, multi-band GPS and training features that make it a capable option for serious training, rather than a basic running tracker.
It also supports music stored on the watch and listening through Bluetooth headphones, according to the Forerunner 965 owner’s manual. That can make it useful for a run when you want audio without carrying a phone, although Bluetooth headphones are needed to listen.

When the fēnix 8 makes sense for training
The fēnix 8 retains Garmin’s listed mapping, GPS and training capabilities while adding hardware features the Forerunner comparison does not show: a built-in flashlight, ECG app, speaker and microphone, and voice calling and texting. If you value those features beyond training, the fēnix can serve a broader role than a run- or triathlon-focused watch.
Does the fēnix 8’s higher water rating matter?
Garmin lists the fēnix 8 at 10 ATM and the Forerunner 965 at 5 ATM. That gives the fēnix a higher stated water rating, which may be relevant if water resistance is a priority. A rating alone does not establish a guarantee for a particular activity or use case; consult Garmin’s guidance for the exact model and intended use rather than treating the number as an activity-specific promise.

Which has better battery life?
There is no single fēnix 8 battery figure: size, display configuration and use change the estimate. Garmin lists up to 23 days in smartwatch mode for the Forerunner 965, up to 16 days (7 days with always-on display) for the 47 mm AMOLED fēnix 8, and up to 29 days (13 days always-on) for the 51 mm AMOLED model. These are manufacturer estimates for different configurations, so they do not establish which watch will last longer under identical conditions. For an informed comparison, match the fēnix size and display you intend to buy, and account for display settings and your use.
Is the fēnix 8 worth the extra cost?
Garmin’s U.S. comparison listed the Forerunner 965 at $599.99 and the 47 mm AMOLED fēnix 8 at $999.99 and up. That is a substantial listed-price gap, but it is not a complete comparison of every fēnix 8 configuration: the 51 mm comparison page did not show a price in the available content, and listings can change. Check the current price for the exact model before deciding.

The added spend is easier to justify if you will use the fēnix-specific hardware or want its more rugged-oriented configuration. If your main needs are running or triathlon training, maps, multi-band GPS and music, Garmin lists those core capabilities on the Forerunner 965 too; the fēnix’s higher price does not by itself mean it is a better fit.
Check size and band fit before buying
Size affects more than how a watch sits on your wrist: Garmin’s comparison lists a 26 mm QuickFit band for the 51 mm fēnix 8 and 22 mm-compatible bands for the Forerunner 965. Confirm the exact fēnix variant before choosing a replacement band, and do not assume the 51 mm band specification applies to every fēnix 8. Also compare the specific size, display and material when checking weight, battery estimates and price.

- Pick the Forerunner 965 if you prioritize a comparatively light watch for running or triathlon and want maps, multi-band GPS, music and training-readiness tools.
- Pick the fēnix 8 if you value its higher water rating, flashlight, ECG app, speaker and microphone, voice calling and texting, or its range of size and material choices.
- Compare exact configurations if battery life, weight, band fit or price will determine your decision; the fēnix figures are not interchangeable across sizes and variants.
