What the official material does show is where brightness is set, which display variant you own, and several settings that change how the screen behaves at night. If the screen feels too bright in the dark, start with the brightness menu below, then check the display-specific settings that apply to your model.
What is and is not established
Public posts from owners describe the problem in literal terms. One asks whether there is a way to turn off the “Auto Dim on display” feature, and another calls the autodim on the fēnix 8 “horrific.” These posts show that some owners are unhappy with dimming and brightness at night. They do not measure how common the complaint is, identify a cause, or tie it to a specific firmware version.

Garmin has not published a version-specific cause or fix for this complaint in the material available for this article. Treat the steps below as the documented controls, not as a confirmed repair.
Which fēnix 8 display you have
The fēnix 8 line comes in two display types. Identify yours before following any device-specific advice, because some controls exist only on AMOLED and MicroLED models.

|---|---|---|
| AMOLED | 43 mm, 47 mm, 51 mm | A bright AMOLED display, per Garmin’s fēnix 8 announcement and product pages |
| Solar | 47 mm, 51 mm | A solar charging display, per Garmin’s fēnix 8 announcement |
“Bright” here is Garmin’s own marketing description. It is not an independent brightness measurement, and it does not say how the screen will feel to you in a dark room.
How to change brightness
- From the watch face, hold the middle-left button to open the menu.
- Select Watch Settings, then Display & Brightness.
- Adjust Brightness. Garmin’s owner’s manual describes this control as “Sets the brightness level of the screen.”
- Check whether your setting is being overridden in certain situations. Garmin says settings can be customized for situations such as sleep and activities through Focus Modes, so a level that looks correct in ordinary use may not apply at night or during an activity.
If the change seems inconsistent, compare the setting in ordinary use with the setting during sleep or an activity before assuming the watch is malfunctioning.

Display settings that change what you see in the dark
The table lists the controls Garmin documents for AMOLED and MicroLED models. The manual describes them, but the sources do not establish a combination of settings that resolves the complaint described in the headline.
| Setting | Where it applies | What Garmin documents |
|---|---|---|
| Brightness | Watch Settings > Display & Brightness | Sets the brightness level of the screen |
| Focus Modes | Situations such as sleep and activities | Lets settings be customized per situation, so the active brightness can differ by context |
| Always On Display | AMOLED and MicroLED models | Keeps watch-face data visible while turning down brightness and background; Garmin says this affects battery and display life |
| Color Shift (listed as Red Shift in some materials) | AMOLED and MicroLED models, low-light use | Displays red, green, or orange shades; Garmin’s support article says some screens may have reduced visible contrast |
| Timeout | AMOLED and MicroLED models | The display turns off after the selected timeout to minimize burn-in |
Color Shift and Red Shift
Garmin’s current manual uses Color Shift and describes a blue-light filter option on supported AMOLED and MicroLED models. Another manual version and Garmin’s support page use Red Shift, and the support page says the available shades can help preserve night vision. Wording and features can vary by manual version and model, so use the exact label on your watch when you search the menu.

Burn-in and display life
Garmin states that “Image persistence, or pixel ‘burn-in,’ is normal behavior for AMOLED devices.” It advises avoiding static images at high brightness for long periods to extend display life. That is general product guidance. It does not show that a brightness level damages a particular unit, and it does not show that the complaint leads to burn-in.
What to check if the screen is still too bright
- Confirm the brightness value under Watch Settings > Display & Brightness, then repeat the check in your sleep and activity contexts.
- On AMOLED or MicroLED models, review Always On Display, Color Shift, and the timeout, since each changes what stays lit at night.
- Note your display type and case size. A Solar model does not offer the same AMOLED-specific controls.
- If the behavior persists after these checks, record the firmware version and the exact setting values, then contact Garmin support with those details. No version-specific fix from Garmin is documented in the sources available for this article.
Buying considerations
The main choice the official material supports is display type and case size: AMOLED or Solar, then 43, 47, or 51 mm where available. Garmin’s descriptions do not establish which display suits a reader who is sensitive to brightness at night. If that is your main concern, test the watch in the settings above before relying on any single brightness level, and do not treat a purchase as a remedy for the complaint.

Several points are not established in the available sources: whether a particular firmware version changes the auto-dim or brightness behavior, how many owners experience the problem, and whether any setting turns off auto-dim entirely. Until Garmin documents those points, the menu controls above are the reliable starting place.
