There is no reliable one-number answer: fēnix 8 comes with either an AMOLED display or a sunlight-visible transflective MIP display, while Apple lists up to 3,000 nits peak brightness for Apple Watch Ultra 4. Those specifications do not establish a winner in every outdoor condition, and the reviewed Garmin materials do not provide a directly comparable nits figure.
First, identify which fēnix 8 display you mean
Garmin sells fēnix 8 AMOLED models in 43, 47 and 51 mm sizes, and Solar models in 47 and 51 mm sizes. Garmin identifies the Solar display as sunlight-visible, transflective memory-in-pixel (MIP); it is not the same screen technology as the AMOLED version. Garmin describes the AMOLED display as offering increased brightness, color and detail, which is the company’s product language rather than an independent measurement. Garmin’s fēnix 8 launch announcement and its product comparison distinguish the variants.

That distinction changes the comparison. For a display-technology comparison, consider fēnix 8 Solar MIP and fēnix 8 AMOLED separately against Apple Watch Ultra 4 OLED. A claim about “the fēnix 8” as if it had one display type risks describing the wrong model.
What the published brightness figures do—and don’t—tell you
Apple’s current Apple Watch comparison page lists Ultra 4 with an Always-On Retina display, wide-angle OLED, LTPO3 and peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits. The figure is a manufacturer specification, not a promise that the screen will show every detail clearly in every setting. Garmin’s reviewed fēnix 8 materials do not state a comparable nits rating, so a numeric brightness head-to-head cannot be made from these sources.

Apple’s separate Ultra 3 technical specifications also state up to 3,000 nits, a 1-nit minimum, sapphire crystal and Night Mode for certain watch faces. These are Ultra 3 details; the current comparison page identifies Ultra 4, but the Ultra 3-specific minimum brightness and Night Mode information should not be assumed to apply unchanged to Ultra 4.
Peak brightness is only one consideration in readability. Ambient light, reflections, viewing angle, the watch face and its contrast, and whether the screen is dimmed or awake can all affect what you can see. Without a matched test in the same conditions, neither the published Apple figure nor Garmin’s display descriptions establish which watch is easier to read outdoors.

How the displays differ in outdoor use
fēnix 8 Solar: transflective MIP
Garmin labels the Solar model’s screen sunlight-visible and transflective. That describes its display technology, but the reviewed specifications do not provide an outdoor legibility measurement or a nits value. Garmin’s battery-life footnote for the 51 mm Solar model assumes three hours per day outside at 50,000 lux; that is a battery-test condition, not a readability test. Garmin also says the 51 mm fēnix 8 Solar harvests 50% more solar power than its predecessor, a power-harvesting claim rather than a screen-brightness result. Neither figure should be treated as proof of better legibility.

Garmin’s manual documents adjustable brightness and display controls for different situations, including sleep and activities. On AMOLED and MicroLED models, always-on mode keeps face data visible while dimming the brightness and background. Garmin notes that always-on behavior affects battery and display life. The manual also describes red, green or orange color-shift modes for low-light use and night-vision preservation. These options let you adapt the display, but they do not constitute evidence of outdoor performance. See Garmin’s fēnix 8 display and brightness settings.

Apple Watch Ultra 4: OLED with a stated peak
Apple lists an OLED display and up to 3,000 nits peak brightness for Ultra 4 on its current comparison page. That supplies a published peak figure that is missing from the reviewed fēnix 8 materials, but it does not by itself tell you how the two watches compare under glare, at an oblique wrist angle or with realistic always-on settings.

- Advanced multisport GPS smartwatch for athletes/adventurers features a 1.4” solar charged display with scratch-resistant sapphire lens, durable titanium bezel and built-in LED flashlight for after-dark visibility
- Battery performance: up to 48 days of battery life in smartwatch mode with solar charging (assumes all-day wear with 3 hours per day outside in 50,000 lux conditions) and up to 149 hours in GPS mode with solar charging (assumes continuous use for entire period in 50,000 lux conditions) — all with an always-on display, so you’re ready to take on the toughest challenges
- Power up your body’s performance, endurance and resistance to injury with targeted strength training plans, real-time stamina tracking, sport-specific workouts and a full range of built-in sports apps
- Your training readiness score is based on sleep quality, recovery, training load and HRV status to determine if you’re primed to go hard and reap the rewards (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- For your active lifestyle, a built-in speaker and mic let you make and take phone calls from your wrist when your watch is paired to your smartphone — and you can even use your smartphone’s voice assistant to respond to text messages and more
- Try direct sun. Look at the same kind of information on each watch, such as the time, a complication or a workout metric, without changing your position to favor one screen.
- Move into shade and changing light. Check whether the screen remains easy to scan as the environment shifts, rather than judging only at peak brightness in one location.
- Vary wrist angle. View each screen straight on and from the angles you naturally use while walking, running or cycling.
- Use realistic settings. For AMOLED, check both its configured brightness and the dimmed always-on state if that is how you plan to wear it. Use the watch faces and display behaviors you would actually keep enabled.
- Check low-light needs separately. Consider whether night-time display behavior matters to you; Garmin documents color-shift options, while Apple’s cited Night Mode information is specifically for Ultra 3.
This is an evaluation method, not a reported side-by-side test. The available manufacturer specifications do not support a universal readability winner.

Which comparison is most useful?
| Model | Display information established by the cited manufacturer source | What the specification cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Garmin fēnix 8 Solar | Sunlight-visible, transflective MIP; no comparable nits figure stated in the reviewed Garmin materials. Garmin comparison | A measured readability advantage over either OLED display in matched outdoor conditions. |
| Garmin fēnix 8 AMOLED | AMOLED; brightness is configurable and always-on mode dims the face and background on AMOLED/MicroLED models. No comparable nits figure stated in the reviewed materials. Garmin manual | A measured readability advantage over the Solar MIP or Apple display. |
| Apple Watch Ultra 4 | Always-On Retina, wide-angle OLED, LTPO3 and up to 3,000 nits peak brightness. Apple comparison | How that peak translates into legibility in a particular wearer’s outdoor conditions or against a Garmin model. |
