If its instructions call for it, stop and reset the chronograph first, avoid pressing the pushers while the crown is in the setting position, and return or secure the crown exactly as directed.
Before you adjust the watch
Identify the model and, if listed, the movement, then find its manufacturer’s instructions. A brand may publish separate procedures for different chronograph styles: Skagen, for example, provides multiple instruction sets, while Citizen’s B620 manual applies to that specific movement. Do not assume a procedure for one watch fits another.

Check the manual for the crown positions used to set the time and calendar, the direction in which to turn the crown, whether the crown screws down, and any hours when the date must not be adjusted. Some instructions also require stopping and resetting the chronograph before setting the time.
Set the time and date using the model’s instructions
- Stop and reset the chronograph if required. Fossil’s instruction sheet says to stop the chronograph and return it to zero (12:00) before setting the time. It also warns that pressing the pushers with the crown in position 2 can move chronograph hands. Follow this precaution when it applies to your watch; do not operate pushers in a crown position where the manual warns against it. Fossil time and date instructions
- Pull the crown to the position specified for the calendar. Check the manual’s restricted hours before changing the date. On the Citizen B620, calendar adjustment uses crown position 1; other watches may differ. Turn the crown in the direction specified by your manual.
- Set the time in the specified position. On the Citizen B620, time adjustment uses crown position 2. Other models may use a different arrangement. The B620 manual also notes that its chronograph resets during time adjustment.
- Return the crown to its normal position. Citizen’s B620 instructions say to push it to position 0 when finished. If your watch has a screw-lock crown, follow the manufacturer’s directions to secure it; do not assume that pushing alone is enough.

Respect the date-setting hours in your manual
Calendar mechanisms can be engaged during certain hours, so a manual may prohibit changing the date then. The restricted interval is not the same for every chronograph:
- Citizen B620: Do not adjust the calendar while the watch displays between 9:00 PM and 1:00 AM. Citizen warns that the date indication may change improperly.
- Skagen: Its instructions vary by style. One set cautions that setting the date at approximately 10:00 PM–1:00 AM may prevent the date from changing the following day; another says not to set it between 9:00 PM and 1:00 AM.
These are model-specific examples, not a universal safe window. Find the instructions for your exact watch on Skagen’s watch instructions page or through the manufacturer for your model.

If the date is wrong or the chronograph hands move
If you are unsure of the crown position, the date-setting direction, or the safe adjustment interval, stop rather than try different settings. Return the crown as the manual directs and consult the instructions for the exact model. If chronograph hands move while adjusting, avoid further pusher presses until you have checked the model’s procedure; Fossil specifically warns that pushers can move those hands when its crown is in position 2.
