Choose the Garmin fēnix 8 if you want an AMOLED screen option, Garmin-described dive functions, or a speaker and microphone for paired-phone calls and voice controls. Choose the fēnix 7 Pro Solar if you prefer a transflective MIP display and its shared multisport features cover what you need. Compare the same case size and operating mode: both families come in different configurations, and battery figures are manufacturer estimates rather than guaranteed runtimes.
What are the main differences?
The fēnix 8 is a family of watches, not one screen configuration. Garmin lists both AMOLED and Solar MIP versions. The fēnix 7 Pro Solar uses a transflective memory-in-pixel (MIP) display. The 47 mm fēnix 8 AMOLED has a listed 1.4-inch display, compared with 1.3 inches on the 47 mm fēnix 7 Pro Solar, according to Garmin’s 2024 comparison table.

The clearest reasons to step up to the fēnix 8 are its AMOLED option, dive activities and paired-phone voice features. The fēnix 7 Pro Solar already shares a substantial set of multisport, training, health, navigation and everyday functions, including a built-in flashlight. The flashlight alone is not a reason to choose one over the other.

Display and sizes: AMOLED or MIP?
AMOLED offers a different screen presentation from MIP; the decision is a preference, not proof that one is universally easier to read in every situation. Garmin’s comparison table lists these available sizes and screen configurations:

These sizes and lens options are from Garmin’s 2024 model comparison; check the exact edition available in your region before buying. For the 47 mm models, Garmin lists 454 × 454 pixels for the fēnix 8 AMOLED and 260 × 260 for the 47 mm fēnix 7 family in its fēnix 7 versus fēnix 8 comparison. That is a specification comparison, not an independent visibility test.
Battery life: compare like with like
Garmin’s battery figures are maximum estimates. Match case size, display version and operating mode before comparing them; smartwatch mode and solar-smartwatch mode are not interchangeable figures. The estimates below are from Garmin’s 2024 comparison table.

| fēnix 8 Solar, 47 mm | 21 days | 28 days |
| fēnix 8 Solar, 51 mm | 30 days | 48 days |
For the 51 mm watches, Garmin’s UK comparison gives the fēnix 8 Solar estimates as up to 30 days in smartwatch mode or 48 days with solar, versus up to 28 or 37 days for the fēnix 7X Pro Solar. Garmin’s stated solar assumption is all-day wear with three hours outdoors each day at 50,000 lux, as described in its UK comparison. Actual runtime depends on use and enabled features, including wrist-based heart rate, notifications, GPS, internal sensors and connected sensors, according to the fēnix 8 owner manual. These are Garmin estimates, not independent battery-test results.

Garmin describes the fēnix 8 as supporting scuba and apnea dive activities up to 40 metres. Its owner manual specifies a 10 ATM water rating, a 4 ATM Dive rating designed to comply with EN 13319, and a depth sensor accurate from 0 to 40 metres. The manual also directs users to inspect parts for damage before each use. These specifications do not establish that every water activity is suitable; follow the manual’s guidance for the activity and equipment.

Calls, voice controls and shared features
Garmin says the fēnix 8 has a built-in speaker and microphone for calls when paired with a phone, along with voice commands that can work offline. Phone calls require the paired phone. These are manufacturer-described capabilities; no independent hands-on verification is available here. Garmin’s UK comparison describes pairing the watch with a phone to make and take calls or use the phone’s voice assistant.
Garmin’s comparison table lists a broad shared feature set for the fēnix 8 and fēnix 7 Pro, including a Gen 5 heart-rate sensor, smart notifications, health monitoring, sleep score, PacePro, Garmin Coach, VO₂ max, stamina, endurance score, hill score, Garmin Pay, music, mapping and navigation. Preloaded TopoActive maps depend on edition. Confirm the precise model configuration if a particular map preload matters to you.
